Maroon Clown dun want to host anemone
TayHongSiang replied to TayHongSiang's topic in FOWLR (Fish-only with Live-rock)
So troublesome ah... Seems my maroon does not like the bed i bought for him. -
I have found the source of bleaching problem. It's the pH level. Thanks to experienced auntie at Wong Loy Kee aquarium. Add pH buffer and reef builder to raise yr pH level to 8.1-8.4.

Very nice...well balanced display. My kind of wish aquarium. Looking at the pictures already make me feel wonderful, i can imagine siting there just admiring at the tank.

Hydor Wave Maker for 2FT Marine Tank
TayHongSiang replied to raylinea's topic in New to the Marine Aquaria Hobby
I dun think is yr wavemaker problem bcoz when fishes try to come near the wavemaker, they will be blown away. I have fixed a wavemaker recently and my clown fish dun come near it. Observe yr fishes, see whether are they chasing each other. And also anemones will sting yr fishes...only clown fishes can dance inside. -
Price Check for Common Shrimps and Snails
TayHongSiang replied to dnsfpl's topic in New to the Marine Aquaria Hobby
Ok, for those snails you mentioned. It's $2.00 only. Alexandra Village sells them; quite a few there. Not a popular choice though. Personally for me, i dun like to put those trigular snails coz they makes my aquarium looks ugly. Buy algae blenny or yellow goby. Algae blenny will chew the sand together with the algae and they will split out the sand, hence eating the algae. -
FYI, mandarins are very difficult fishes to keep. They do not normally survive long in aquariums as they are very sensitive to water parameters. They are very shallow water fishes and they thrive in temp that fluctuates due to high tigh and low tigh in their wild environment. I have used seachem paraguard for my office 4ft tank, it is a good solution to control parasites. (thumbs up) But if you want a long-term solution, get an ozoniser and switch on during night time. Off it whenever you feed yr corals with planktons and when u add nitrifying bacteria into yr tank.

Price Check for Common Shrimps and Snails
TayHongSiang replied to dnsfpl's topic in New to the Marine Aquaria Hobby
Depends where u buy bro. So far, i have shopped at 3 aquariums - Wong Loy Kee @ Chinatown, Alexandra Village and Jiireh @ West Coast. If you go to the shop at Alexandra Village, the cleaner shrimp (big) is $9. But its seasonal, not always have stock. Their live stocks come on saturdays afternoons. Jiireh aquarium which i went today and i bought a cleaner shrimp (big) $15.00, 3 cleaner gobies @$8 each and purple mushrooms @$35.00. -
i bought my zoa one week ago, no problem..opens up whenever i switch on my lights. And they are on the mid-level of my tank. My zoa is size of my hand. I think they like moderate currents and dun place them near to corals that stings. And i feed them with phyplankton from reefmax everyday.

30-31 degree celsius can keep LPS & softies?
TayHongSiang replied to Earth's topic in General Reefkeeping_
Softies like leather, mushrooms and polyps can tahan 30-31 degrees during day time coz in the wild they thrive in shallow waters. I also have some mushies and polyps, so far they are doing well. LPS sure die...i wouldn't take the risk by purchasing them even if they are very attractive. -
Changing of Water during Cycling Period
TayHongSiang replied to TayHongSiang's topic in New to the Marine Aquaria Hobby
To newbies and noobies, I have checked and confirmed. Never change your water during cycling period till 50 days when it is complete. And DO NOT switch on your Ozoniser during cycling period. And only ON your ozoniser in the night. Day time off it. -
I also encounter the same problem with my super green mushrooms. Noticed the polyps start to turn translucent. I have shifted them to a lower position and put some iodine. Hopefully they will be better.
-
I have the same problem as my tank is new. Its natural to occur for new tank during cycling period. You can check out seachem products and reefmax from jir_h marine aquarium that can lower phosphate level and get rid of brown algae eventually. Meanwhile, reduce your lighting hrs and change yr water. Brown algae outbreak is usually a result of too much nutrients in the water from food, nitrate, waste, etc...
-
Yup...now its turning into green algae on the pump and sandbed
-
I got some blue mushrooms, but they seems to be small as compared to the pics...is it because they are juveniles?
-
I noticed now the brown algae are starting to turn green...hope its a good sign

Where to buy zoo at $20? haha...dun seems to find a shop selling at this price.

Changing of Water during Cycling Period
TayHongSiang replied to TayHongSiang's topic in New to the Marine Aquaria Hobby
The fishes are there to generate ammonia and to keep the cycling process going. But i only add the soft corals and fishes on the 2nd week. The only thing i'm not sure is whether to do a 10-20% water change during cycling. -
You can buy ready-made salt water from marine aquariums...it's quite safe. $5.00 for one jelly-can. There's one shop at Alexandra Village got sell. Tel: 6271 3308. Their stuffs are very reasonable including the fishes. For eg, they selling maxima clams at $28.00. But the quality of their corals so-so only. But before u use it, check the water parameters. I'm also using distilled water from NTUC, as my tank is 25gallons.

hi Marine Expertradoos, Do i change water during cycling period and also is it advisable to change the filter wool during this time? And my pH level has dropped to 6.8, it is advisable to add pH buffer or just let nature take its course? Currently, i have 2 mushrooms, 2 polyps and 2 fishes in the tank. Thanks
