Btw your SPS looks awesome bro. Make my saliva drip

Drilling one or two holes is safest n simplest method. The hole should be located just below normal water level at output pipe. The hole however need maintenance as it will get block by algae over time. :-)

Absolutely right that check valves can fail. Mine failed a number times resulting in flood to sump tank. Have to do monthly test to "dislodge " the ball which got stuck very often. You got to hear the "thump" sound as confirmation that the ball has locked into position every time you shut the return pump. If no thump sound then got to on n off a few more times for the ball to dislodged n locked in position.

Sudden disappearance syndrome ?!
dragon1188 replied to woyeng**'s topic in FOWLR (Fish-only with Live-rock)
I also encounter same disappearance of my 5inch naso tang. After 10years in my 4ft tank, I noticed it wasn't eating well one day. Before that it was the pig of the tank. 4 days later I can't find it in main tank or overflow or sump tank or floor. The funny thing is I can't even find its skeleton. Water parameters was also ok. -
Most tangs fight each other quite often n sometimes they play together. Naso tangs are normally more well behave towards other fishes as well as human. My naso like me to rub its head during feeding. Once my blue tang was dying from ich lying on its side on bottom. The naso kept coming to nudge it to upright. So touch. Eventually my blue tang survived. Tangs can live very long. My blue n naso tang bought on 1 jan 2001. Naso lived till 2011. Blue tang still going strong today. My friend passed his 2inch purple tang to me in 2004. Its still alive but not too strong..short sighted n faded color.

I got my falcula at LFS at pasir ris farmway 2. Most of time I prefer his fish than other lfs further in. Got it at a steal $15 n its 2inch long n saw it very active. Did not manage to get him to demo feeding. Also bought the Horseshoe at same size n price n a long nose butterfly m the banner. The long nose did not survive long due to bullying by flame clown. Have since renegade flame clown to sump tank. It also killed my blue lip angel. Even my fingers are not spared by flame clown when I am cleaning tank. Teeth are small but super sharp..hahaha. The banner was small at 1 inch long n thought it cant survive but surprisingly it can eat a lot n super fast. Now its almost 2in after 1 year.

Hi bro. I am also interested in keeping butterflies. Currently am keeping a Horseshoe butterflyfish (Chaetodon pictus),a falcula and a banner (Heniochus acuminata). Been keeping them for a year. It's important that there are no bullies in the tank so that they fed well and not stressed. This will keep their immune high to resist diseases. Its really difficult to keep ich at bay. Every new intro of new fish is very high chance of having another bout of ich infection. Copperband are cheap n easy to start but its difficult to find species that are not captured using cyanide..They will feed well for 2 to 3 months n stop eating then goes downhill very fast. To start new butterflies feeding, try chopped squid meal. They just love it. Hope this helps. My other fishes are tangs (11-13yrs old!), damsel and clowns. The damsel is 14yrs old.

Yes u can feed the algae to your fishes as long they can finish eating them especially the green fleshy filament type but not the red slimy type. My tangs n clowns eat them but not too much. I reduced the amount of food fed after they ate the algae.

The only issue I faced is yellowing of water due to algae decay I think. So I only need to use activated carbon every 2 mths to polish up the water. Any one facing this yellow issue?

Santa monica is right that algae scrubber if implemented correctly will reduce the need to change water. I myself have not change water for almost 2 years. Got to clarify that my tank is a Fish only with a bit of soft mushrooms. If u need to keep hard corals, regular water change is required to maintain micro nutrients. And how healthy are my fishes? My blue tang is 13 yrs old being 8yrs on algae scrubber. My purple tang is 12yrs old, damsel is 14yrs n clowns 10-13 yrs old. ..haha older than my own children. ..

Keeping nitrates low on a simpless nano
dragon1188 replied to Marine_fanaticz's topic in New to the Marine Aquaria Hobby
Been using sponge as mechanical filter, monthly wc and after battling hair algae, high no3 and po4 for 7yrs, i finally change to algae scrubber. Also remove sponge and skimmer. Now no hair algae n manageable po4 n no3. Do water change once a year. -
And also, you can wrap your bulbs with transparent plastic sheet bought from popular used for wrapping books. They will protect the bulbs nd washing is just unwrapping the plastic sheet and washing them! Hope this help

Just a suggestion bro, if you tilt all the 4 plates at an angle instead of vertical, you can get more lights shinning on them. :-)

I am not very sure if we really need to DIY and put a ground probe to drain away runaway/nuisance current. I thought any "proper" elecrical appliances with grounding/3pin plug like the Chiller would be able to drain away all these runaway/nuisance current. I used to experience a little of tingling shock whenever i put my little finger in my sump tank. But after i installed my chiller, the tingling shock thing is no more. So do we need a specialised ground probe?

I had one in my sump tank some time back. It was getting along well for about 5 months. Guess it was feeding off the debris that was flowing into the sump tank. One fine day i moved it to another slightly different location and it just went downhill and died. Dont really advise anyone to get one (from my experience)

Nice sun flower, bro Ken. How do you target feed them? I always got problem feeding pieces of meat to my anemone. My greedy angel and tangs just keep grabbing them away.

Think PO4 level is not affected by adjusting flow per see. Something in the tank is introducing PO4 into the bulk water. Most common source is food. Other source of PO4 is from contaminated rocks and sand.

WTS : Good US brand Skimmer - AquaC EV-120
dragon1188 replied to dragon1188's topic in Sell off/Pasar Malam Shop
Price is negotiable... Up for the weekend. -
I have a spare AquaC EV-120 skimmer for sale (without pump). Need a 2000L/hr pump to work effectively. This is a well known US made skimmer. Very sturdy design and build. Very effective. Easy to clean and come with drainage valve on container cup for heavy skimate. Used it for 4 yrs and then in store room for 2 yrs. Condition is good except for the screw on the gate valve which is quite rusty but prefectly workable (the screw is the only metal part on the whole skimmer). Looking at $200 obo. I bought it new for $520. SMS me at nine-777-one-one-39 if interested. Cheers!
