If there is air inside the u-shape pipe, i guess the siphon might break. I am not sure as well. Maybe some experts can give us some facts?

If using I-box, there should not be any problem. I am using one and have tested the system by shutting off my return pump. After I switch on the return pump again, the overflow will contiune to siphon the water from my main tank to my sump.

I have been cycling my tank for about 1 week plus. ( I know it's still very early). A few days ago, there seems to have lots of brown stuff (diatoms?) appearing on my sand bed and on the wall of the glass. My ammonia now 0ppm and my nitrite is more than 4ppm. ( have not measured my nitrate yet) I am not using any lights at the moment. My question is: Is it possible for diatoms to appear when the nitrite is so high?

Most of the rocks are covered with coralline algae. The person that sold me said that the rocks are cured, but just in case, it's better to cure it yourself.
