Water quality! nitrate level!
sanjaypills55 replied to sanjaypills55's topic in FOWLR (Fish-only with Live-rock)
Mine is 40-60 ppm too! Had plans to keep few hardy corals like buttons etc...but i doubt it will survive at such high levels of nitrates! Upgraded skimmer & reduced feeding all.. but no use! Anybody had success keeping hardy coral in high nitrates..other than mushrooms orsony, How much did it reduce after the denitrator? Tell us more about it? -
For FOWLR, what nitrate level is ok? I mean what nitrate level would be safe for the fishes as well as keep nuisance algae & crayno (red slime algae) under control. & what is ur level on nitrates in ur tank!
-
Yeah pricing is slightly higher than Pasir ris fish farm... & fishes look crammed into small tanks...so the fishes may not be very health... i think... But the place is defiantly convenient for ppl staying at Yishun area!
-
The tube at the output of the skimmer is made big for a purpose...to let the skimmed water along with some bubble to be directed back to the tank or sump. If u modify this pipe or connect any other device at the output of the skimmer, the skimmer may not perform as it supposed to...

How many times do you try a fish?
sanjaypills55 replied to akahoshi's topic in FOWLR (Fish-only with Live-rock)
Tried keeping green mandrin twice...give up... Now keeping spotted!! -
I finally bought a Reef Octopus DNW-110. Its not a very cheap skimmer or but much cheaper than the high end ones..Still playing with water level to get optimum skimming. Cant see very good results after almost a month of usage! Ah Siang, Even though i am on a tight budget, changing 10% water in 3 days could be a very expensive affair on long run... Synthetic salt isnt that cheap. Anyway reduced my feeding to half... hope that helps in reducing my bio-load!

Has any bro's have any 1st hand experience in adding sugar! How much do u add! Does it work?

Coil Denitrator Sounds very diificult to construct & use... So from now on will follow a new regime!! Will feed half a cube of frozen food for morning & balance half at night! (that goes for my fresh water tank too) Will do 10-15% weekly water changes for few weeks & see whether the Nitrates reduce! What do u guys think? Open for more suggestions!!
-
Sorry, i was a little confused!! The Coil denitrator doesn't require supplements. I saw a good website with details on how to construct it! http://saltaquarium.about.com/od/diydenitr...oildenitrat.htm
-
My tank isnt big enough to house so many pods to keep the madrin from going hungry!! About the denitrator! Do u need to add bacteria & other supplements to keep the bacteria alive! What do u guys use, & how much is the running cost?
-
Vodka for fish, does the fish turn sebo...ha ha (just kiddin) But serious does that really work!! As i said i have reduced the feeding to one cube of frozen food in the morning & pellets at night,... but only my tangs & clown eat pellets.. others too fussy!! Don't know if i can reduce feeding more without harming the fish! Especially my slow eaters like my spotted mandarin Do u guys think changing 20% in 4 weeks is better than 5% every week! i do change 10-15% some weeks but if i do that every week... will get big hole in my pocket!! Can see some some red algae on my live rocks.. but not too much!! Since i have on sump, no place for algae scrubber I but i did make some space in my overflow for cheatos, hope they grow fast & reduce my nitrates.. but i guess that's wishful thinking!!
-
I used to feed one cube Frozen brine/Mysis shrimp twice a day.. now reduced it to once a day, since 2 weeks I guess u are right, will do more percentage of water change for few weeks. But sea salt very expensive, leh! :-)
-
Mine is a 50 Gallon low-tech tank! Running on fans (28 deg C) No Sump (just an overflow) Its a home Tank! At present its only a FOWLR with some mushrooms but i wanna add some coral! But with such high nitrates, don't think any corals will survive! Skimmer: Changed from Weipro to Reef Octopus, 3 weeks ago! Lifestock: 1 Yellow Tang 1 Copper Band Butterfly Fish 1 Maroon Clown 1 Long Nose Hawk Fish 1 Spotted Mandrin Cleaning Crew 2 Skunk & 1 Fire shimp, 1 Hermit & 5 Turbo Snails, 1 Tiger Cowre & Sand Sifting Star!

Hi guys, Even after using a good skimmer, my nitrates are still 40-60 ppm, My bio load is moderate & i do 5 % water change daily! I have put some cheatos to reduce nitrates but i guess they are very slow. Has any fellow reefers used denitrating products such as SeaChem de*Nitrate or anything similar! How much does it cost & how affective is it? Cause i am always in a tight budget!! he he

Reef Octopus Protien Skimmer
sanjaypills55 replied to sanjaypills55's topic in New to the Marine Aquaria Hobby
The DNW-110 model of Reef octopus doesn't have any air in-take adjustment!! So only adjustment i can do is increase or decrease the water level on the skimmer. Water level is now kept at a good height so that i can try getting as wet skimming as possible, but not too high to overflow, but still not enough wet skim mates. How about ppl using Reef octopus.. anybody with experience? -
I have the same problem as ur... Seems like the bubbles only touch the lid of the skimmer & just stay there & dry... they dont flow much to the collection cup. where u able to solve?

Reef Octopus Protien Skimmer
sanjaypills55 replied to sanjaypills55's topic in New to the Marine Aquaria Hobby
Hi Guys, Its been 2 week since i bought the Reef Octopus Protein Skimmer Model: DNW 110 But i dont get much of the greenish watery skim mates. After every 3-4 day i do see some dry mud like skim mates above the neck of the skimmer. I can see lot of bubble & all... & i have adjusted the water level upto the neck of the skimmer. Anybody whos using reef octopus having this problem.. -
Did u check the ammonia nitrite & nitrate! Henry gourmet food dissolves very quicky in water & tends polluted the water. Just do a partial water change & see if it helps..

Once i had set up a quarantine for my yellow tang, cus it had white spots. I had a 1.5 X 1X 1 ft tank. I guess, the tank was too small & the quality of water deteriorated too fast. Eventually the tang died... & never used it again. Bottom line is if the quarantine tank is too small, it will end up killing the fish if u put a big fish in like a yellow tang. Just wanted to share my experience.....

what is the water temp ?
sanjaypills55 replied to kelvin70's topic in New to the Marine Aquaria Hobby
Hi Bro, If u don't wanna invest in a chiller, just buy a cooling fan from ur local fish shop. It will certainly help in bringing down Ur temperature. Only downside is the fan will evaporate a lot of water... & u need to top up using freshwater regularly. -

Reef Octopus Protien Skimmer
sanjaypills55 replied to sanjaypills55's topic in New to the Marine Aquaria Hobby
But is dymax as good as reef octopus in quality & performance. I have heard reefers complaining that their needle wheel pump can get noisy after some time. Although i am not so fussy about a bit of noise... -

Thanks Ah Siang, reborn has reef octopus, but i want DNW.110 external model. & they have only the expensive high end ones. Guess i have to wait for lower end ones to come.. or search for second hand!
