Report: Caribbean Coral Reefs Have Collapsed, Mostly Dead
clownfish_forever replied to CFOh's topic in General Reefkeeping_
Not sure there is any policy to govern against the overfishing of grazer species -
IMO, 1) Not sure how nano is your tank but water change to some people are subjective. Quite a handful people practice this to remove the unwanted nutrient from the tank. 2) Yes, you should. The point for cycling is to allow your tank to cultivate enough bacteria to help you with breakdown the harmful ammonia to nitrite to nitrate to nitrogen. So a mechanical filter will not do it. Unless you have other ways to remove them.

No wonder la. I was in for a shock when I saw them in Ah Beng place a couple of months ago. I was also like "wow...sure or not...sooooo pink and soooo yellow". They dont look natural to me.

Personally once awhile I will setup traps to catch some of them - too keep their population under control. Some predators also keep them under control. Anyway I dont ever think it is possible to wipe out all of them...mission impossible.

Hi brothers, I have a curious question on coral growth with regards to the lighting coverage they receive. 1) For SPS, as the colonies grow some part of the colonies will be blocked from the light from the new growth. Does that imply that those shaded area will die off or simply the area receiving the light will sustain the life for the entire colonies? Means it is fine that some areas are shaded? Then extending this question to LPS and zoas. 2) For LPS, some corals with mulitple heads like hammers, frogspawn, does it matter if 1 head is shaded from light? Does that mean that head will die off? 3) Similiarly for zoas, sometimes we bought a big ball of zoas but due to placement, some polys may not get the lights, does that mean those polyps will die off too? Thanks!

Will You Be Furios If...
clownfish_forever replied to John Deroe Kenedy's topic in General Reefkeeping_
Definitely been there before. Thats why I am sooooo hesitant to buy fishes unless from the most respected LFS. And I am still scare to buy expensive fishes... -
The anemone seems to be on the side of the rock? If so, quite odd for an already dead fish to drop right into the anemone... mm... X file.

Same actually. Flame angels may nip on clam mantle so depends on your luck.

New to Marine Aquaria
clownfish_forever replied to Mohammed Kanchwala's topic in New to the Marine Aquaria Hobby
Just my opinion too. 1. My tank temp is 29 degrees Celsius and Salinity reads at 1.025/1.026. Is this fine? What would be ideal? - agree also that it depends on what you are going to keep. If it is FOWLR, ie. without corals it may be fine. I have been doing so for a few years till I switch to corals. - even with corals, it also depends on what corals you going to keep. Personally I am keeping only soft corals and zoas, and they seem happy with my 2 cooling fans (no chiller) temp is around 28.3 - 28.6 on typical day. - salinty should be fine for 1.025. 2. What do I need to understand while testing the water quality. I am using the Water Testing strips. Is anyone using them to advice? - Using test kits, go for reliable brands like Salifert, Redsea, etc. I am measuring Ammonia, NO2, NO3, pH and PO. - If you going to keep hard corals, you probably have more parameters to measure. 3. How often do I need to change the tank water or top up? And can I use normal tap water to top up with anti chlorine if salinity is high? If salinity is low how much salt do I need to mix?? - Top up the evaporation is daily chore. Ideally should use DI water for top-up otherwise go for some products that can 'detox' the water. Our tap water have some chemical that are not nice such as silicate that cause diatoms. - Water change is subjected. Most recommend weekly or bi-weekly depending on the bioload of your tank and usually 10% - 20% i think... -
Gel to glue coral colony
clownfish_forever replied to clownfish_forever's topic in General Reefkeeping_
Actually that only time I used epoxy wasnt very successful too. Maybe I didnt do it right - after I stick a leather coral, I regreted after a week so I decided to move it somewhere...surprisingly I only pulled lightly and it got detached ...lol -
Hi brothers, A quick question. I am wondering if anyone has tried gluing a coral colony to rock using gel? I guess for frag gel works well but what about corals that comes attached to base rock. I am hoping to avoid epoxy because it made my skimmer so crazy for 1 - 2 weeks before... Thank you

My new fire shrimp and grouper
clownfish_forever replied to sungod666's topic in FOWLR (Fish-only with Live-rock)
Definitely a predator. If you have a grouper, all other fishes have to match its size or aggression...else hardly can survive. Crustaceans serve as meal -

I have 3 of them, so far they did not target my coraline unless their damage is minimal. But they do kill snails for food and shells hor... -
