HELP!! Confused by lighting combinations...
wedgee replied to wedgee's topic in New to the Marine Aquaria Hobby
Oh yah, i think u or someone else once posted a thread describing the cost of ordering VHO from US rite? I remember the shipping alone, for a few tubes, came up to S$300++!!! So that would make the total of; replacing the ballasts, getting the UV, heat, waterproof thingies, and the actual tubes, to come up to a few hundred dollars? Pardon me is i'm mistaken though! -
Corals injured during transportation
wedgee replied to wedgee's topic in New to the Marine Aquaria Hobby
Er temperature 27`28C, NO2 and NO3 close to zero... Shld'nt be the water rite? Cause they seem to have recovered from their 'shock', as Tanzy described... Anyways, how long does it take to know yr coral is REALLY gona live on in that tank??? -
Hey guys, just got me first corals - mushrooms - on friday, and they seem to be doing ok till now - first day was worrying though, cause one was damaged during the way home, and leaked its gooey contents out into the tank (lucky i spotted it and removed the sticky stuff). Then just today another leaked its stuff out, and i had to pull the whole piece out (quite small) just in case. It seems that they were all stressed out on the first day in the tank, cause they were quite shrivelled up and didnt glow as much, but after a day they seem to have opened up and have started to look normal again... Is this a normal occurence for new corals in the tank? Or is it cause my water is bad? Do u guys get yr corals damaged while bringing them back from the LFS? Cause the corals sometimes are stuck on large, heavy rocks, and sometimes they tend to get smashed in the plastic bag if they are growing all over the rock... Any way to avoid this?

Hmmm, any idea where to get VHO tubes? Dont they need special fittings? I dont suppose they would fit in a normal FL hood rite... Yah, all lights create havoc on the temperature! Me using A.C fan to blow onto the light hood, so not too big a problem -
Polyfilter vs protein skimmer vs carbon
wedgee replied to RMX's topic in New to the Marine Aquaria Hobby
Hey you're not alone, clowntrigger! My skimmer produced much less foam when i put in one piece of polyfilter! I had to turn the flow rate all the way up to get the foam level back on line... Guess the filter really works huh? -
Hahah! Looks like yr 'boxers' are causing a hell lot of trouble for yr lifestock! Anyways, the anemone shrimp were selling for just $5!!! I was Sooooooooo tempted to grab a pair! Lucky i didnt, cause they wont have any anemones to live amongst, in my tank... I love the way they sway from left to right (have u seen them do this?), make my heart melt Btw, is it possible to order those peppermint shrimps? Anyone knows of a LFS that accepts special orders?

Wow, thanx for the chunk of info bawater! Hope u guys can keep feeding me with info, cause most of wat i know is only from LFS and net; i need actual experiences in sgp... Hmm, i've been eyeing star polyps too! But they seem so fragile, so i have only one block of mushrooms in my tank now-the uncle at Reef World very friendly, gave me $2 discount and tons of coral care advice! I love to see them glow green under the lights... Btw, can i change the bulbs from 36W to 55W or other higher ratings? Or is the ballast only for 36W tubes? Wat is the max Wattage for FL Atinics? Heheh, once again have to trouble u experts to help me with these questions... -
Polyfilter vs protein skimmer vs carbon
wedgee replied to RMX's topic in New to the Marine Aquaria Hobby
Err i hope i not too kiasu here, but i put in all three!!! (Carbon, poly & skimmer) Guess i have to be super careful cause i beginner... -
Sigh, all the violence is killing everyone's mood and peace, i guess... Wow, looks like yr friend gonna have a real good time tonite huh? Too bad me underaged for Centro, been aching to pop in for a peep- was having a night photoshoot there once, and the ladies there seem to be much more civilised and 'upper-class' ya? Another piece of Halloween fun: Breeks at Tampines had their employees smudge 'blood' on their faces; looking like they just came from a B-grade horror movie set! HAHAH so innovative...

Hmmm....isnt this supposed to be a "Shrimps and crabs" post? heheheh... Anyways, just like to hitch-hike a question here...anyone know where to get peppermint shrimps? The LFS always mix them up with camel shrimps! Btw, i saw Sea Life at Balestier selling these really CUTE anemone shrimps! Too bad i dont have any anemone in my tank right now...

HELP!! Confused by lighting combinations...
wedgee posted a topic in New to the Marine Aquaria Hobby
Hi guys, I'm really in a spot now, cause I will be taking the step towards corals slowly, by next month (when I'm super sure the tank is cycled) But after reading up so many articles, the only one type i'm sure of keeping is the mushroom corals. Even so, I'm not sure wat kind of lighting these guys need! Can any kind soul just gimme a view of: wat types of corals i can get as a beginner; and wat type of lighting they need (eg atinic? normal? at wat intensity?) Be grateful if u guys have pix of the corals, cause the name confuses me even further, hahah!!! Anyways, I have one dual tube PL hood w one normal and one atinic(JBJ, alas!) at 10,000K 36W, and a normal FL with just 20W output...can any expert tell me wat combo(PL how many and wat type, FL wat type) in my current setup i shld be using to provide lighting good enuff for most corals? Hope its not too much to ask!!! @^%#&^ CONFUSED.... -
How to read test kits down to units per ppm?
wedgee replied to wedgee's topic in New to the Marine Aquaria Hobby
Thanx for the help! But i'm feeling abit funny here, cause ever since i started my tank 1 week ago, I havent been getting any readings of Nitrite or Nitrate! Only thing that indicated some 'cycling' of the tank was the initial cloudy water for 2 days(which i didnt bother to test). A Blue Tang and a Blue Damsel that i put in have started eating and seem at home right away... Should i be happy? Or is something waiting to go wrong? I plan on introducing mushrooms and other corals soon, so i hope everything is as ok as it seems.... -
Yah cant agree with u more, Achilles...I was browing thru a magazine at Kinokuniya last weekend, and 95% of the pages were covered with ads... From Corallife salt mix to SKimmers to fish food ads!!! REALLY NOT WORTH THE $12! One year subscription is better off spent on a few good solid aquarium guid books or references... And I've been getting all my important info from the Net too!
-
Hello me back to bother u experts again, heheh... Just like to know, how do u guys get the 0.1 ppm (eg) readings on a normal color chart of the test kits? I'm using Sera N02 and NO3 kits, but they have 5 different colors on a scale and some numbers under them, but i dont know how to read it down to exact figures? The figures there read : "20ml + 0ml" "10 ml + 10ml"... on the vertical scale, & "0mg/l, 5mg/l, 10mg/l....." on the horizontal. Can someone talk some sense into me??!?!?!?!?

OIC! You were talking abt the fans used on the CPU itself! Those ARE quite hard to remove indeed (tried it once, and my fingers got sore)...but wat abt the fans on the tower casing and power supplies? Those look bigger and more useful? THANX AGAIN
-
Hmmm, my SG is around 1.021 at 28C temp. Is dat ok? I havent added corals, so i'm keeping the salinity lower for now... Anyways, I got a filter bag (from provision shop) used for cooking food in, and placed in at the skimmer output- managed to control the micro bubbles getting into the tank; but still have quite abit though. Thanx guys, for telling me wat level to put the foam at, cause it seems to be skimming right now- one big blob of foam resting above the throat, while the throat foam is quite far from overflowing...

I dont know if i lucky or wat, but since i didnt want the tang in my tank anyways, I just treated my new Blue Tang the 'freshwater' way...TONS OF Methylene Blue!!! Only one spot of ich was left after the first day, and none left on the second...guess all that stuff everyone is saying abt Methylene Blue is true after all? Maybe u want to use this solution for yr precious Tangs? And like B|uEc@rpEt, I too used live brine shrimp to tempt it into eating... good thing LFS tend to sell them in packets nowadays... Hmm, btw anyone have a 'tried and tested' way of cultivating algae for fish food? Or is there any commercial product i can feed the fish with to replace algae food? If so pls specify the name and brand, and where to get?

Hey Bawater, wat corals u got in yr tank? With the lights on, my tank is also at 28C u see... THANX FOR HELP

Hi everyone! I've just started a new 50 gallon tank, and added a Red Sea Prizm skimmer onto it (Yah i know this isn't really a good piece of equipment, but i just couldnt get my hands on an Aqua C locally - buying thru the Net would mean double the price...sigh!) Hope u guys can help with some questions cause this is my FIRST experience with a skimmer... 1. What should the level of the bubbles be at, cause I don't know how much water flow i should feed into the skimmer... Meaning; shld the bubbles be below the 'overflow' level (not going into the collection area)? Or shld they be overflowing slowly or quickly into the collection area? --If I let the bubbles flow into the collection area slowly, they fill up the area soon with water, which is unlike the gunk i see from other skimmers...and the output from the skimmer is simply FULL of micro-bubbles! --If I keep the bubble level in the skimmer way below the overflow point, the skimmer output has less but still visible micro-bubbles...in this setting the skimming isnt taking place right? (cause zero bubbles going into the collection cup... 2. Are micro-bubbles harmful in any way towards fish/corals/inverts? 3. If they are; how can i prevent my skimmer from releasing them? If not, can i use any method to 'filter' them off? Hope these questions are not too stoopid to ask, and appreciate it if u guys could help me out cause I'm a total noob...I just dont know what to set the skimmer at: Overflowing bubbles into cup with tons of micro-bubbles in the tank, or Zero cup collection with some micro-bubbles in the tank... SIGH!!!!

cleaner crew to recomend for reef only tank...
