The ex. owner did gravity feed or house the skimmer on the right hand side(facing the tank). So your placement seems the only way unless you do partition to separate them. bro, think you better take a pic of your sump. Based on your description, it seems like your sump has very few compartment....all in the rtn compartment....you didnt face any micro bubble issue which is good...

it depends on the source. If the inlet source is at the skimmer compart and your outlet is to your return compartment, minimum recycling.
