Search for Iwaki at the below url: www.thegreenbook.com MD30R brand new will set you back around $500-600 MD55R brand new is around $700-800

Try to get it from Hong Kong as its a lot cheaper than buying it in Singapore. You can get secondhand pumps once in a while. I bought once an MD55FX for $50 and recently an MD30R at $80 bought slightly used. Comparing an MD30R rated at ~1800 li/hr to an Eheim 1060 rated at 2200 li/hr connect to a SCWD is no contest. The Iwaki can drive the SCWD wavemaker with enough pressure and flow as compared to an Eheim which can only drive it at probably half the Iwaki output....

What brand was the bulb...it seems there was some cases of German MH lamps that fails prematurely due to a quality problem

To those who bought the pink seriatopora ... Who has retained the bright pink color so far? -
Nope, Germany and Holland yes

GUys, Ushio is a Japanese lighting company who has bought over BLV of Germany. That,s why they are called Ushio BLV. European MH lamps especially Germann bulbs require HPS/MH ballast and igniter except for certain models only. Apparently US light manufacturers are not as advanced as the Europeans in terms of MH lamp technology.

Spiff, Get crushed coral chips #15 at $8 /kg. That's what I use after Aquamedic. Try to screen the chips before you put it in the reactor. Remove darkened, discolored chips and non-coral objects that goes along with it. IT's cheap and I find it better than pure calc carbonate in maintaining KH. Aquamedic calc carbonate seems to stop dissolving after a few months.

oh, oh.... hey people I don't keep banned SPS but rather I have legal smelly people's socks and soggy puppy sh*t all over my floor! further more my rocks are not living they're probably been dead for 50 years or more. Living rocks are not good for glass tanks as they break them when they walk...

HI cat, If you don't want a DIY which cost like $150. Then get a Korallin brand reactor, you can order it from an HK on-line shop. BUt then you have minimal SPS then maybe the Dupla can serve your tank well enough. In the future though if u decide to get SPS then u need to buy a bigger reactor for you 300 gallon tank. I have a 48 x 20 x 20 inch tank ( around 90 gal) but I use a double chamber (4 inch diameter x 2 feet high each) DIY reactor and dripping ~2-4 drops per second to maintain 11 DKH.

Phang, All German MH lamps require igniter to work. 4.2 KV is usually for 150w and probably 250w, 400w will probably require 6 KV igniter. Ask the electrical shop for the matching igniter for the respective ballast size. HPS and HQI ballast are the same unless bulb manufacturer tells you to use another type.

Almost all MH ballast sold in Singapore are of the German pulse start ballast which is the same as a HPS ballast. The ballast used n the US are seldom brought in unless somebody bought lighting fixtures from the US. In terms of lighting technology Europeans are more advance. As long as your MH lamps are German made you can't go wrong with HPS/MH ballast & igniter combination. Vossloh Schwabe, Osram and Magnetek ballast are reliable.

Radiums are not lacking in wavelenght below 400nm in fact it has lots of it. You do not need actinics with radium. See the spectral chart at http://www.radium.de/deutsch/produkte/ab/e.../spektrale.html The peak is at 440nm which is very close to the wavelenght that corals utilize. The Radium catalogue which has a spectral curve chart shows that the wavelenght goes below 400 nm at around 0.5 the peak of the 440nm. That means it has a lot of violet components and possibly UV A as well. On tanks lighted with radium blue bulbs the corals actually glow a little especially those with green pigments. If you put your hand below an Iwasaki and the Radium, you can feel the difference on the intensity of the light hitting your skin. You'll get sunburned under a Radium faster than an Iwasaki. IMO you will need actinic supplementation with 10000K bulbs as they look a bit yellow with out them especially Ushios. They look slightly better than 6500K but they are not very white. In the end it is your own preference on how your tank look likes, bluish will look like it is from deeper waters while the yellowish and greenish looks like your shallow reef flats when you go snorkeling.

Get a tang (yellow/purple) to clear it. They like the stuff so much! I have it in my refugium and in fact I wanted more of it so that I can feed it to my tangs. Its a type of red algae not cyanobacteria.

Hon! How is your reef project coming along?
robe replied to Achilles Tang's topic in General Reefkeeping_
Hi Hon Better upgrade to a bigger frame stand as that can collapse if sideward force is applied like bumping into it accidentally. That one can be modified by putting welded web struts in between the horizontal frame and vertical support colums to reinforce it. ===================== " -- " -- " -- " -- " -- "-- " -
The price for the Knead it is $4 per 50 gram tube. I bough it from the DIY shop. So far I fastened my LCK frag with it, as well as 3 others. No effect in my tank including my corals.
