Yeah I read about that part too For me, I think that we must first see how much UV actually hits the reef as compared to MH lights. If you want to run a MH with UV filter, it could be quite a health risk unless you apply layer after layer of sunscreen lotion

If you are looking for a filtration system to clear the water, you are only curing the symptom, not the cause. You have to look at what went wrong and fix that part

Diatoms build a sillicate shell and you can only remove them once you eliminate sillicates in your water Tap water contains a lot of unwanted ions (abt 60ppm) which the recommended amount for our reefs are at most 2ppm Therefore, you can help this situation by investing in a DI or RO/DI unit and running rowaphos

The only reasons I can think of is that you either have mass dieoff somewhere or you have ionic imbalance which caused precipitation. Change some water and check your LS and water parameters
