  1. Use those phosphate/sillicate removal media and top up with at least DI water. Diatoms build a sillica shell around their cell and that's why they need sillicates to thrive. Hope this helps
  2. Its a normal phenomenon as fishes do become pale to camouflage themselves from predators. Nothing much to worry about
  3. Hmm I'm quite surprised to see my tank thread on the third page while browsing through past articles. Well, for the most part, my digitatas are growing like mad!! Its like they're on steroids or something. But its not all good because somehow, my orange polyp digitata grew so much, its base couldn't support its weight and it fragged itself Nothing much of a difference except for SPS growth. I might be getting a lunar timer and LED soon too
  4. I doubt it will make a significant difference and besides, a canister cannot fill enough rocks and it is even more inapropriate for a DSB
  5. Take note that sandbeds need a lot of maintenance (that's a common misconception that you can just leave it there). I've written some articles on it here so do a search for them. A refugium is a good place to grow pods and provide some nutrient control for your system and it can be used to house sick fish too. It is not necessary but you should consider having one!!
  6. Sarcophytons are easy to propagate as they can regenerate amazingly. I once pulled out this big leather that fused onto the rock and it left a few strands of its tissue on the rock which I thought would degrade away but it amazingly grew back into another specimen
  7. The number of reefers are sure to at least remain around the current number now considering most of those who came to this hobby because of Nemo had already left the hobby or have no more interest. I think it all goes down to what Conrad said about new reefers being spoonfed information when they should have the initiative to find them themselves. Every "pro" was originally a beginner which no knowledge whatsoever. I believe, as long as there are people who want to learn more and know more, there will never be a shortage of "pros"
  8. ORP stands for Oxidation-Reduction potential It is a rather hard to explain topic in terms of reefkeeping but in simple terms it is used as a guide to water quality. You see, a drop in ORP would most likely be significant to a change in water quality and most people use it to keep their water quality in check and constant. Another usage is that it is used to prevent overdosage of ozone by an ozone generator or linked up to a generator to keep ORP levels constant
  9. Remember this: Most corals will start to expel zooxathellae once the temperatures are above 30 degrees But from personal experience, I find that 27-28 degrees suit the corals quite well Colder temperatures should also be avoided as the corals will be stressed
  10. Hi guys, in the recent bout of events that are happening, I have decided to totally resign myself from the club. It does me good and also does the club good from having less gossips and unwanted offences. I would still do my part in the gathering though and it shall be my last contribution. I hope that all that I have done for the club from helping out during Aquarama even though the next day is my "O" Levels to planning for Anthony Calfo to come for a workshop to the frag workshops had helped other reefers in anyway. And here, I would like to thank a series of people, good people, who had supported and guided me throughout my time here I wish to express my heartfelt thanks to Joseph (Gouldian), Keith (keithtty), Conrad (AT) and Joe (joe_p) for their care, support and guidance throughout the hobby And I also want to thank Jia Hong (veliferium) and Edwan (giantbicycle) for giving me such a wonderful time and friendship I want to specially thank nakazoru for hosting the frag workshop And lastly I want to thank those whom I had forgotten to mention that had helped me in any way. I wish everyone in the club success in their reefs and always remember, do your part to save the reefs. Participate in coral propagation now Blueheaven signing off...
  11. Well I don't know whether you guys have seen that I've only postponed it once and that the date is fixed at 25th June 2006 which is not far from now. I needed information from the reefers to plan things such as venue and activities while waiting for AT to finish the details. Well, I get your concern there shoelevy It's rather ironic if you think about it. If I do things discretely, people start to say I'm not doing anything about it. And if I do things in the open, people start to say I should do it discretely That's enough, I'm telling the mods to close this
  12. But how could you have friendship when people whom you don't even know or met start to say that you are immature or over-confident? To be honest, I've had enough of this mature/immature thing P.S. Anthony said he was eager to try our local "delicacies" again
  13. Well bro, I started a thread for me to post updates on the event. For the very first thread which announces the meeting, it was postponed due to 2 factors: 1) There was not enough time to collaborate details and we don't want to rush through things and mess the whole event up 2) Anthony was to be in LA throughout the whole of Nov/Dec so he couldn't make it But the June 25th date is already confirmed and it's on Anthony's schedule. For the issue about roping in more experienced hobbyists is just for the first gathering and if you'd notice, I did say tht subsequent gatherings would feature local presenters. And the reason why I kept posting about this is firstly, I needed to tell everyone about the event and needed suggestions so there goes the poll. Then, I needed to tell everyone about the change in dates and then do another poll to estimate the number of people attending so as to confirm a venue. And just to clarify, I am not acting on behalf of the others involved but I'm just doing my share of the work. The other members would eventually settle on stuff like ordering and collecting, booking of venue, distributing publicity stuff to LFS and the such so everyone has a part to play. Well anyway, I've got Conrad to clarify this and start the order. Honestly, I don't know why you are posting these because if you are not interested or do not belief that it'll happen, you could as well place a vote saying that you are not interested. I find it utterly offensive especially when you highlight threads and said that I "only talk and nothing happen" and also again bringing up the issue about my level of maturity. Seriously, I am beginning to doubt why I'm even doing all this. I don't get paid for it and neither will I receive a trophy or certificate for it. And for those who still think I'm doing this to gain popularity or as a campaign for being nominated as a mod, all I can say is that popularity and "modship" would not earn me anything either and it does not really matter as long as I can get whatever aspects of reefkeeping I am promoting across to the reefers. I think after all the hype that is happening, it had made me more depressed. I mean its like you try to do something for the benefit of the community and then you get people who will start suspecting that you have an ulterior motive and start to question your actions. The reason why I'm still holding on despite all the criticisms I've received is because I believed that the club will grow and I believed that eventually people will start realising that SRC has the potential to forge breakthroughs in the reefing hobby. But this belief is diminishing unfortunately....
  14. Haha you got that right about me There'll most likely be a frag exchange during the June meeting
  15. The reason why it seems to have no movement now is that at this stage, I am awaiting for Conrad to post all the details for the order and stuff. I am part of the organising commitee and the one who gave the idea but ultimately, it is Conrad and the mods who are heading this meeting. And why am I doing that? Because if I start collecting orders and cash for the posters and books, people would start to say I am doing commerical posting or that they would not trust me with the cash. There is a lot of things going on backstage from sponsoring to planning stuff like a raffle. There is a lot of things to be done such as for the coral propagation workshop, who is going to provide the corals? And for tank visits, how are we going to schedule it such that people don't get crammed up in a small HDB flat? And for Anthony Calfo to come all the way here is also something difficult cause the funding for his flight and accomodation is to be taken care of by the club. I personally do not like regular chit chat sessions in coffee shops as they usually yield nothing more than some laughter. What I want is not only for reefers to get to know each other, but more importantly, to expose the beginners to a more practical approach to reefing. Subsequent meetings would include our own local speakers and presenters on many various aspects of reefing but as a starter, I thought it would be well to bring in a reknown coral farmer to give his presentation. I ensure you guys that I definately am not NATO and Conrad can confirm that. So pls bro, before you start highlighting threads and saying that nothing is going on, try asking the people involved first as there are many things that cannot be disclosed until it is finalised
  16. You might want to look at an Ice Probe But it's kind of pricey though
  17. Any info on the exact address? I remember there was once SPI did an investigation in a flat at Bedok and it was spooky
  18. Happy B'Dae to you Kanesh (didn't know till I saw it at the bottom) Wishing you all the best in your exams this important year
  19. I think I'll stick with being a straight/spinner than a hooker although I'm experimenting on hooking now. Can't seem to get it right no matter how I usually aim at the second arrow since the ball goes straight And btw, is pin action related to anything? I mean is it directly related to speed, weight, angle, etc? Wondering about this cause I once had a "pro" teach me a thing or two and I noticed he actually lofted the ball to somewhere over the arrows and he did get real good pin action. (Wonder why the centre didn't ban him for doing that )
  20. Oh man the Baked fish with Mango Salsa again!!! Can't stand the temptation already, I may go down just this weekend
  21. I personally dislike bidding for items Unless it's a charity auction, I'll not put a bid onto anything And bidding here may cause some problems with the LFS who may think we are willing to pay ridiculous prices for common things. So what they'll do is to jack up the prices of their stuff and the person who loses is the reefer Well, just my thoughts on bidding
  22. Yeah this should be made known to SPI (I'm a member there too! )
  23. Thanks man!! I have also learnt to do a blind swivel cut and also invented my own variant which I call "Triplex"
  24. It'll be cool as Anthony was not scheduled to come until 2007 and he has generously agreed to pay us a visit I hope the attendance will not be too unsatisfactory
