  12. You might want to use layers of butter paper to shade the coral and remove piece by piece over a few weeks?
  13. yes, its a very doubtful statement
  14. I am willing to try out a before and after but it'll take some time though..
  15. How about we start a discussion with pics?
  16. There's where I got the idea from It emphasises on the "Environment Gradient" You guys can go read it and maybe more people will try out this method or even try to improve it.
  17. Managed to chance upon an article on the Quorum Gene in bacteria. Its called gene sensing where bacteria produce this gene to sense whether they are in a dense or sparse environment. The bacteria used in this field are disease causing bacteria and they found that this gene will actually activate the bacteria to produce toxins. Therefore, I hooked up my lecturer and we are now on a project to find out whether the quorum gene in sandbed bacteria will actually trigger detrimental effects and then, we will try to produce a reef safe (hopefully) "gene blocker" and see whether we can stop the effects of this gene
  18. I would also want to make it clear to some people that sandbeds do not have to be deep to do its purpose (convert nitrates to nitrogen gas) Its been proved that a fairly thin sandbed comprising of small and slighter bigger grains will do the job just fine Another important factor is to have infauna to help slowly shift the sand so that there would not be an area that is 100% anaerobic
  19. It will have the sand bed (notice that its not very deep about 3.5''), LR that I specially selected and some sponges and tunicates
  20. Before fuge Pros: Pods will not get skimmed up Tank will be cleaned more effieciently (only if you place the output at the return) Cons: Will not react fast enough when macros crash Will reduce water flow in the refugium (depend on the type of skimmer you use) After fuge Pros: Able to salvage macro crash Cons: May skim up pods Tank water will take some time to reach skimmer
  21. Oh, I accidently stumbled on it while LFFing Guess I do not need it now that I am setting up a cryptic refugium
  22. it all depend on you whether you want to grow pods there or not... but its got its pros and cons for putting the skimmer after the fuge And here's a pic from RC showing different types of caulerpa
  23. Maybe we could even form our own commitee
  24. In regards to my mum who keeps telling me that she is worried about lights in my sump, I have finally decided to set up a cryptic refugium Yes, it will be revolutionary and I will update you guys on its progress
