  1. Actually the thicker the sandbed, the lesser oxygen can diffuse in, the more chances of creating an anaerobic zone. And an anaerobic zone has the heterotrophic anaerobic bacteria which converts nitrate to ammonium through ammonification. Yes, you do get lower nitrates but you got a whole lot of ammonium The leakage I believe is due to the fact that cyano grows in the sandbed itself. As cyano is nitrogen fixing, it will convert the nitrogen to fertilizers for it to use which in this case is nitrates. As excess nitrates are produced, this excess leeches out into the water column and contribute to the bulk nitrate levels. Another hypothesis I made about phosphate is that as detritus accumulates in the sandbed, there are not enough infauna to consume them and as they are left there, phosphate seems to leech into the bulk water column. In my opinion, I cannot see how a sandbed can be like a "sponge" which can be a sink for nutrients. The most possible reason is improper care which leads to these problems arising
  2. I prefer keeping a sparkling clean sandbed to reflect the light But regarding mirrors, its a nice thing to try though

  4. Yah I somehow agree with that. People come and go very easily as most do not want to bother about exploring further. Its somehow like a formula though, people think when others dump sand and manage to keep nice, growing corals and healthy fishes, they can too when they dump sand. But most of the time, the background work is not described and ths oftens misleads others. But we cannot blame them as we have the herding instinct. Have you seen people queueing for the same thing and not wanting to queue up too?
  5. Yeah I believe that if you spend some time reading up on the modern reefkeeping methodologies, added with your previous years of experience, you might be successful in this hobby. So, welcome back to this hobby
  6. Its a sea squirt or more commonly called a tunicate
  7. Ok, here's the latest game plan. Basically, the Trade Days do not necesitate the presence of any one from SRC permanently there at the booth as the trade visitors are out to look at equipment, negotiate deals, find new customers etc. Therefore, all SRC volunteers will be deployed during PUBLIC DAYS only. This year is slightly easier as we do not have to display sponsor's products, manage inventory and cashbox. We will need volunteers to help man the booth with a mininal presence where the interested public will be handed brochures promoting the Reef Club and our interests to help them progress in the hobby. Newbies can come to the booth and speak to more experienced hobbyists. Sunday afternoon, Mr Anthony Calfo will be present so we can do a mini-Q&A at our booth even! We should give our SRC booth a festive atmosphere... we have a table and chairs, we can sit down for drinks, chit-chat etc. We will have a timetable of volunteers so at ALL TIMES, we must have at least 3 people around as 'on duty' and the rest can be the 'crowd'. So here goes! Add in your names! Sat 1 to 3pm: Blueheaven 3 to 5pm: Blueheaven 5 to 8pm : Blueheaven Sun 10 to 12noon: 12pm to 2pm: 2pm to 4pm: 4pm to 5pm: (Speech time need people to STAY at booth) 5pm to 8pm :(more volunteers to help teardown and pack away stuff) Those who can volunteer the longest till the end of the day will be appointed IC and will be given a TRADE PASS for free entry and massage by Diabolus.
  8. After the seminar, I believe it has somehow bonded us more and broke some ice. Although I kept more of a low profile on that day, I can see that many of us are laughing, chatting and getting to know each other. (you know, I am still regretting that I kept low profile) Anyway, I believe that as we progress as a club, we'll have more meetings and I hope we will progress to weekly meetings of a larger scale. Well, at least i promise not to be so quiet next time
  9. Just wanna ask, do they have big bottles of DTs on sale?
  10. Sat morning is a trade day so I guess I'll help out in the afternoon then
  11. Sat its open at 1pm if I am not wrong
  12. Yeah, sometimes I am also sick of people who think they can put in up to 6 inches of sandbed and say that they have a DSB but after a while, either algae smothers the surface or they have an anaerobic zone and have the "black stuff" Actually the statement of creating an anaerobic zone is false as it only serves ammonification in which nitrates are converted to ammonium which Anthony likes to say "its rocket fuel" for algae growth. So I believe that in regards to what Anthony had said, all systems will work but it all depends on the user who work it
  13. Wanted to ask this question long ago but keep on forgetting How do you guys manage to capture those shots under the strong lights? I tried fiddling with the exposure but still it turned up crappy Anyway, finally your reef is up again after the mishap... All my thumbs up

  18. Actually, what's the difference between trade days and public days?
  19. These guys like nutrient laden water They either grow like weeds or just waste away. IMO not hardy at all
  20. Set my CR bubble rate to 1 per 4 sec Effluent at 1 drop per 1 sec Calcium levels on the high side at 500ppm Magnesium on the low side at 1100ppm Ionic imbalance there so I'll change water tomorrow. Does the CR actually replenish magnesium? Using ARM media
