Mega Powerful Nitrate and Phosphate Remover - DIY!
Firestarter replied to SantaMonica's topic in General Reefkeeping_
After 6 days into the setup of the scrubber, my nitrates have dropped significantly. Here is a pic of the algae growth. Note that the blob of green hair algae in the middle was used to seed the scrubber, and not part of algae growth. -
Limited space when buying a LR of mushrooms
Firestarter replied to Firestarter's topic in Soft Coral Forum
Its just some normal green striped mushroom. I've been wanting it for a long time, just that I can't find anywhere that sells them. Here is a pic of it from the rhodatics fanatics thread. Mine has green instead of blue. http://www.sgreefclub.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=40940 Next target will be the blue spotted mushrooms. -
Idea for a Low-Light "Warm" Small Marine Tank
Firestarter replied to cdckjn's topic in Members Tank & Specs
The 'tank' is definitely too small for fishes. -
Mega Powerful Nitrate and Phosphate Remover - DIY!

Point taken SM, one more question, how long does it take for the algae to grow on the screen? And is it ok to leave the light 24hrs on for the initial stage of algae to grow onto the screen, then cut back to 18hrs once visible algae has grown? -

Limited space when buying a LR of mushrooms
Firestarter replied to Firestarter's topic in Soft Coral Forum
I think I might. But the only problem I see is that some of the mushrooms are really tiny, how do you frag them as well? -
Whenever I'm at the LFS looking for mushrooms to buy, I have to choose mushrooms attached to a small piece of LR. This is so as to prevent rescaping my nano tank. Just wondering if you guys do have the same problem? I just bought a rock of mushrooms today, I couldn't resist even though the LR is quite huge. Now thinking if I should just frag all the mushrooms off the rock or not? What will you guys do?

Mega Powerful Nitrate and Phosphate Remover - DIY!
Firestarter replied to SantaMonica's topic in General Reefkeeping_
Here is my simple algae scrubber, located at the overflow of my IOS tank. I removed my skimmer, and replaced it with the scrubber. My nitrate reading is 25mg/l at point of installation. One question SM, is it ok for me to leave the filter floss under the scrubber? As I want to filter out any dirt/food particles from the tank. -
How many times do you feed your fishes daily?
Firestarter replied to pokmingsheng's topic in FOWLR (Fish-only with Live-rock)
I remember a case of a reefer here who went on an overseas trip and left the feeding to an automatic feeder. The feeder stopped working after a day, and when he came back about 5 days later, his LS were still swimming about healthily and did not seem to be interested in the food that he immediately fed. Puzzled, he posted his experience on the forum. Experts had concluded that his tank had reached equilibrium, which means that all LS in the tank were able to self sustain itself, without the need for human 'intervention'. -
I have the exact same problem as you are encountering now. I noticed that its only the rhodatics that are affected.

Hi peace, I have problems with this LR of zoos that I have kept for a few months now. It has not been opening for almost 5 days now. Really don't want it to die, thinking if you're interested to adopt it. I may give it a few more days to open up. Its not anything special, just common zoos, brown skirts with orange heads. Let me know if you're interested. Btw, keep up with the updates! I've been neglecting my tank now due to my exams.

My 50Gal Low-tech FOWL(without sump)
Firestarter replied to sanjaypills55's topic in FOWLR (Fish-only with Live-rock)
Is your yellow tang pale? Try feeding it more veggie stuff, like nori to get its colour back. -
My 1st FOWLR tank journal
Firestarter replied to reef999's topic in FOWLR (Fish-only with Live-rock)
Hi, you have very good DIY skills. Just some suggestions to improve your setup. 1. You can implement a drainage to your skimmer cup so you don't have to keep removing it for cleaning. Can see that the cup is almost hitting the base of the tank, might be hard to remove all the time. 2. The sump water stains will eventually come off after time if kept wet, you could remove it with some cleaning agent but I guess it too late for now. 3. Your T- return is pumping water back into the sump at the same time? 4. Maybe you can do something about the multiplug, it looks prone to water splash. Keep up with your DIY! Cheers. -
Hi bob, long time since I saw you around, thought you gave up reefing already.

How long do you spend looking at your tank daily?
Firestarter posted a topic in General Reefkeeping_
Just a question to you all, how long do you spend looking at your tank daily? -
Yes, much has changed to my tank, unfortunately my laptop crashed and I lost all pics of my tank, and my lousy digicam can only take FTS but the light settings is way off. I doubt I will be updating my thread anytime soon.

Yes i remember you had a 2ft tank last time, why now pico? hehe.

I see that your tank is getting better. Still using that DIY denitrator?

Looking good! What are the dimensions of the tank?

Just lost a clownfish due to cynaide poisoning
Firestarter replied to Firestarter's topic in General Reefkeeping_
Hi Fuel, thanks for the very useful information you provided. This is the first time I've heard of brookynella, are internal parasites one of the symptoms? -
yellow wrasse missing!!!
Firestarter replied to pokmingsheng's topic in FOWLR (Fish-only with Live-rock)
Yellow wrasse are masters of hiding. I remembered a case which one reefer had gone to the LFS to get LR, and when he reached home and placed the LR into his tank, he was really surprised to see a yellow wrasse swimming in his tank. -
I bought a false percula from one of our sponsors 3 days ago. She told me that the clownfish was from bali, and it looked different from the normal $1 false perculas so I bought it. It looked healthy and always swam about in the open, never once hiding in the LR. Symptoms of cyanide poisoning: 1. Not feeding. I tried feeding frozen brine and mysis, pellet, and dried foods, but it would suck the food in its mouth and then spit it out again. 2. White poop 3. Erratic behaviour, however it seemed alert 4. White patch on its head Can I conclude that its cyanide? Last night it was swimming happily, disturbing my star polyps and now its lying on the tank floor breathing heavily. Well it just sucks to still have fishes being cyanide caught, and being sold especially from our sponsors too.

Can superglue gel be used in water?
Firestarter replied to Firestarter's topic in General Reefkeeping_
Thanks for the info. What I'm using now is superglue GEL. Looks like I can start sticking the frags anywhere I like. -
Hi all, just a question to ask. I want to glue my frags which are attached to small chips of LR onto the bigger LR which are inside the tank. I can't possibly remove the big LR out from the tank. Can I just glue the chips directly onto the big LR in water?

I've used a 3x1.5x1.5ft tank before. I would say its a very nice proportional dimension if you're thinking of a shallow tank.
