  1. In layman terminology: Scenario: If you're a boss and you have an employee that comes to work late/incompetent/give attitude problems, would you rather not have such an employee and do the work yourself? Argument: But having more manpower is better than no manpower right? You decide. With inefficient skimmer (equivalent 5% WC) , your weekly WC is 10%. Without skimmer, with frequent WC, your WC is 20%. This difference in 5% already overpowers the inefficient skimmer. (this is just for your understanding. I'm not saying skimmer is comparable to WC) Besides, skimmer also contributes to heat and takes up space. For smaller tanks, it is easier to do frequent WC (than larger tanks) which already does the work that a skimmer can do. For your goodbye po4, WC will remove the 'particles', you do not necessary need a skimmer for that.
  2. Bacteria hosts in the sand and water column too. I only have 1 fish and I change water frequently whenever I feel like it to keep the bio-load low. I am running chaeto in the HOB with filter floss. I have 2 small pieces of LR in the DT. Thats all.
  3. Thanks for the compliments. The tank is fully loaded and I have problems trying to find space to put more frags. The LPS have grown and I have problems with them touching each other. Good news is I got the green light to setup a tank at home so I'll be transferring the corals to the home tank which project will start after CNY. This office pico will be converted to either SPS or frag tank.
  4. Dude, as mentioned before for tank of this size, using inefficient skimmer is even worse than not using skimmer at all. Is it not the case of using a skimmer is better than not using one. With more frequent WC it is even better than using an average working skimmer.
  5. I'm planning to use a single PAR38 5x3W bulb (3white,2 blue) for my 60x30x20cm tank. I want to know if the spread would be sufficient in lighting up most parts of the tank considering the shallow depth. (bulb height placement can be adjusted) Would this be sufficient for keep LPS corals? Or do I need to get another bulb to have an even spread?
  6. I place me chaeto in my HOB with LED clip on light 24/7. It has grown so much that I can't even pull the clump out of the HOB without using more strength.
  7. Skip the wave maker... the hob will provide enoigh flow for now. You can always add in if you find it too low at a later stage. Cloudiness should clear in a few days. Quickly add liverock to start the cycle now. Lights are ok but dont on them during cycling to minimise algae growth.
  8. Auto pilot I think he refers to the tank having stable parameters without frequent water changes.
  9. Add more water into the last chamber...
  10. Return pump is the heart of the system... it should be the most impt (if you don't count power shortage).
  11. No problem with mixing the salt together. Suggest you setup your tank with LR because you still need time to cycle it.
  12. Bro sunny, yes thats what I'm looking for. Where can I get this besides buying them online?
  13. Bro, the TERTIAL does it come with clip on?
  14. Guys, I'm new to using PAR38, and doing some research before committing to purchase it. I'm looking at the gooseneck clip on types. The problem I have now is that I can't seem to find a clip on stand for it. The only way I see is purchasing it online but its kinda overpriced IMO. I'm thinking if I can use the Ikea JANSJO stand, saw off the head and DIY it to fit a PAR38. If I am not wrong the JANSJO is using a E14 bulb and I can use a converter adaptor type to a E27 for PAR38. Can this be done? Also, are there any other similar products that can be purchased from our sponsors that I'm not aware of?
  15. I would be wary about the thickness. 4mm on a rectangular tank that size is still ok, but on a curved thank I'm not too sure. Better to get at least 5mm. 1. Get the biggest HOB filter you can find. 2. I'll forgo the skimmer. Waste of time and space. Additional pump also heats up the tank. 10% WC twice a week would do. 3. Trash the aquazonic, go for at least the beamswork 6x3W... but that's still not bright enough considering your tank is 36cm high. Best to DIY LED if you can. 4. Hex water filtering system - Best to use RO/DI. the system may have added minerals to the water that will fuel algae growth.
  16. I think it was shocked due to me upgrading my lights. It started to shrink and the next day it detached. I have since thrown it away.
  17. You're welcome anytime. Just didn't want you to risk it and end up losing everything.
  18. As what some have suggested, I will leave the fishes without food for 4 days. Rather than try something new and risk polluting your tank if it goes wrong. Fishes in the wild often go without food for even weeks. I don't see any harm in 4 days.
  19. Use a bigger diameter pipe with endcap and place it under the overflow. Drill holes for the water to flow through, the air will dissipate outfrom the top. Looks better and neater than tupperware.
  20. Use a swing arm hydro as a cheaper alternative.
