Bro, I think you misunderstood our intentions. Most of us have safety in mind, and we tend to swing to the "better be safe than sorry" side. If you are really confident that it is strong, durable, and can take not just vertical, but horizontal displacement, go for it! All da best!

Who is your tank maker? 6mm glass thickness should be fine if it is done by a reputable tank maker. If you just want to have a peace of mind, go for 8mm.

It's perfectly fine to switch on the skimmer during cycling. Judging from the pic you posted, the skimmer is on, so hence my comment above. Brown algae blooms during cycling is expected. They are called diatoms. Are you using DI/RO or distilled water? If you are using tap water, it will be a never ending fight with diatoms.

I think the water level for your skimmer is a little too low. The recommended water level for BM skimmers is either half the body or at least 10 inches, depending on which model you purchased.
