For educational purpose, yes. It will be interesting and important to collect these data for further studies. Can I have the contact of the vendor which carrys these products? A couple of hundreds seems reasonable. I am now working out a budget.

NO3-, NO2-, NH3, Ca2+, all these ions all colourless. These are some of the ions we need to monitor. A colorimeter will not be able to detect their concentration.
-
I dont think a colorimeter can measure the concentration of these colorless ions. I am teaching Chemistry at a JC and I am looking into starting an elective program for students base on aquatic science. I had work with some of these ion-selective electrodes while I was studying. I am checking out if hobbyist use these instruments.

Hi Strat, Interested in your light. What is width of the stand? Please pm me the price. Cheers
-
Hi weileong, Thanks for the info. Are these ion-selective electrodes available in any LFS or other shops? I only notice the pH sensors so far. What's the approximate cost? Cheers
-
Thanks for the feedback. However, I meant the electronic type, those with the probe and you take readings from a meter. I notice that the pH sensor is quite common but have not seen one for ammonia.
-
Hi, Are there any ammonia sensor in the market? Not looking at ammonia test kit. Cheers

Are Cotton Filter Soup Bags safe in the Aquarium?
fishchemist replied to joachimsim's topic in General Reefkeeping_
Basically both nylon and polyester material will still be weaken in an alkali media. Nylon consist of amide linkage while polyester consist of ester linkage, these bonds undergo alkaline hydrolysis(breaks down) under alkaline medium. However, the temperature in marine is usually low, the rate of reaction is usually very slow. Therefore, IMO changing these bags once in a few months shouldn't be an issue. -

Is the Teco Micro Chiller still available? -
Intersested in the skimmer but have three questions. Hows the noise level of this skimmer? Does it come with a powerhead? Whats the width and height of the skimmer?

iodine necessary for soft corals?
fishchemist replied to mAriNe_enthusiast's topic in General Reefkeeping_
Cannot replace iodide by iodine. Iodide( I-, is a colourless ion) is needed for coral growth while iodine(I2, a yellow solution when concentration is low and brown at higher concentration) is dangerous/poision. Never add iodine to your marine tank. -
The owner(Ah Tan) is actually an aircon technician. Yes, the warranty is for a year, but he said that he can still service the chiller after the warranty period. He claims that the running cost is less than 10 a month. I just got my chiller, model 110. Cost 950. Capable of chilling up 400L. Now chilling my 4 ft planted tank, very quiet will give further comments later.....

Sorry, typo error. I mean quotation instead of quotient.

I recently got a quotient for a 4 ft tank with cabinet and sump. The followings are the details: "Hi Simon, I have work out the quote for the tank. Below are the details. Main Tank Dow Corning Weatherseal black silicon is used. All glass edges are machined. 12 mm thick glass. Tank comes with euro bracing on the top & bottom of tank to ensure a strong structure. Cabinet Chennai wood is the top grade wood & known to last for decades even under saltwater condition. Chennai structure are all machine file smooth. No rough surface. Won't cut yourself by running yr fingers over them. Sump Tank Size: 4ft sump for 5ft tank. Design of sump will be custom design to individual needs and requirement. Piping optional George Fischer Piping. Pipe work will be designed to have all safety net to prevent any flooding even if main pump failed. Additional cost will depend on pipework. 5 x 1.5 x 2ft Tank, Cabinet, Sump & Hood w/o piping will cost: $1480"

Yes. When to see the chiller over the weekend. Looks like a Desktop PC. Very quiet, hardly notice any sound. However, Ah Tan(the shop owner) claims that their 1/10 hp chiller can cool up to 250L and highly energy saving. He quoted a price of 850, the larger 1/4 hp cost 950. Comtemtplating..........

what are these that comes with my LR?
fishchemist replied to derricklaj's topic in New to the Marine Aquaria Hobby
I'm a newbie. Can I ask why is aiptasias detestable? And does the usual method of curing the LR takes care of this problem? Thanks in advance -
Well done good and faithful soldier! Must frame up the REAL ROD cert. But do rememeber people like me when you are in paradiz.
-
By the way, I saw your marine tank at your homepage. Really, really, really impressed!

Thanks for the info really appreciate it. Just that some of these chemical additives IMO is really expensive. Thinking of doing a little research/testing to see if there are cheaper alternatives like using some lab grade chemicals which is asessible too. However, safety of the animals comes first. Will never put these lovely creatures to risk. Newbie like me will surely play safe and pay a little more first while learning takes place.
