It depends on the quality and size. I have seen models from $3 to $20

It is the Dymax brand fan. Most of the parts is plastic. Quite cheap at $14 (bought at Aquastar in Yishun) and sounds like a big computer fan (noisy or not is subjective) It consume much less electricity than normal chiller. I don't like those Dolphin chiller because I need to fix up the pipes. I bought the JBJ cube because it is compact and neat. Pipes and chiller will defeat the purpose of having the cube. I am thinking of buying a timer for the fan. I will only at specific time...(when I am not around in the house or in the afternoon when it is hot) I just want temperature to stay at 29 degC. With this target, I think I only need to on the fan 30% of the time. In this way, solve the noise problem and reduce top up I notice my coral only have problems only when temp raises above 30 deg C

Concidentally I add a fan on Monday. It is quite effective in bringing down my temp from 30 to 27 degrees. But it is quite a pain to top up water frequently. My hermit is not good with algae. It keep on disturbing my corals

I don't think my hermit eat algae in my tank. My astra snail is good with algae on the rocks, glass and even on my wave maker. My gravel cleaner suck up a bit of the sand but if you control properly, the sand do not get suck up into the pail
-
It is just a siphon device with hand pump on one side and an opening on the other. Once siphon effect set up, you put the opening near the sand, and detrius will get suck up.

I used a simple 1 canister type DI unit to filter tap water before use. I am using 2x36W compact florescene that come with my JBJ 24G cube which I switch on for 8 hours I do not have special equipment nitrate export I have 1 snail, 1 sand dollar, 2 hermit crap and a brittle star (all do not seem to be effective for this type of algae Yes, the algae is growing on my dead spot. However, I cannot add another wave maker because I do not want to increase my tank heat load (no chiller) I also suspect my API Phosphate test kit...do not ever pick up any PO4. However, it may due to the fact that PO4 is only building up at the dead spot. The good news is that the algae growth seem to slow down a lot this few days. I also remembered that for the past 2 weeks, I may have disturbed the sandbed at the dead spot too much when I use the gravel cleaner. This week, I just clean the sand surface lightly with the gravel cleaner. If the algae do not return for the next few weeks, This may have been the root cause. In the long term, I need to figure out how to remove the dead spot. Thanks everyone for contributing ideas to my algae problem

I have my tank for 4 months now. This is the first time I have this hair-like algae . Need help to ID this algae. It only occurs on one part of the sand bed (below my wavemaker-should also be my tank dead spot) The rest of the sand bed and even the LR do not have this problem I try to clean this area but it will grow back in 1 day!! It did not do much change to my tank but this problem start about two weeks ago. My NO3 has been around 10 ppm for 3 months now. My test kit do not pick up any PO4 level. Can anyone have any suggestions on how to tackle this problem? Your help will be greatly appreciated

This is my 13th Week update. Change of Pump Last week, I changed the water pump from the original one (8W 800l/h) to Eheim Compact 1000 (24W 100l/h). It was a mistake because the water temperature increase to 32 degC because I do not have a chiller. Within 2 days, the high temp have a visible impact on the corals. I was forced to swap back the original pump and the temp went back to 29 degC. The shaft of the original pump corode easily. I am still on a lookout for a new of better quality but with a smiliar flowrate and wattage. Any recommendations? Coral Additions During the weekends, I have also purchased some corals from a fellow friendly reefer. 1 x man eater 1 x lobophyillia together with zoas 1 x favites brain coral My tank is now quite full and do have much space left for more corals

All the leg become bad and thus I have to remove it last week. When I bought the starfish from LFS, the staff just take it out of the water and put it in the bag. I do the same when I put it back to the water. It may be during this time, the starfish is exposed to the air. I am amazed how fast the "rotting" started and spread to all the legs. Thanks for your information. If next time, it occured again, I may try the 2 methods. But I don't think i will dare to buy this type of starfish again in the short term. really like the colour though

This is my 11th Week Update. Brought the following stuff from Coral Farm on Sat 1 x Sand Dollar 1 x CoCo Tube Worm 1 x Orange Star Fish. Unfortunately, my orange star started to lose some of its flesh at the tip of its leg after just one day. Today, it start to spread to the rest of the legs. What is wrong with it? Anyone have any suggestions? The rest of the LS is doing fine.

I just bought a orange star on Sat and one of its legs started to rot off on Sunday. This morning, 3 of the legs have the same problem. Initially, I thought that it is already dead but the fact that it is changing its position indicated that it is still alive. I doubted that I can still save him but can anyone must enlightened me what caused this. I want to learn from this mistake This must be my fastest casuality to date

In the first place, why did the ammonia get so high? Is it because you are using LR that is uncured? You need good bacteria to start forming on your LR. This bacteria will help to break down the ammonia to nitrite and then to nitrate. This whole cycle needs time. You can read about this cycling process in books or forum. Of course, you can add carbon in the filter to help break down the ammonia and nitrate. If you are using uncured LR, this cycling process may take > 8 weeks. Hope this helps

The tank is in its 9th week. I decided to give an update since I have added a few corels this week. Water Parameters I noticed that my calcium level is trendind upwards (440 ppm), while alkalinity is still flucuating between 8-9. I have just bought Seachem carbonate to try to adjust the alkalinity upwards. My target is 9 in the long term. Live Stock I have got some small red mushrooms from bro Snowman for CNY. See whether you can spot them in my tank I have also bought two hammer corals. The green tip one is my favorite. I heard that they do not like high current. I am still finding a suitable place for it. I have moved my brown zoa down to the sand bed because I noticed that the side facing the light is getting lighter in colour. After moving it down, some parts of it is getting some light green colour. Quite interesting.

ScubaJazz, Thanks for sharing your skimmer experience. I bought the skimmer last week but have not got the chance to fit it up yet. Your photos will come in helpful. I have some more questions 1. Another user says it is a bit noisy. Is it true? Does the noise come from the pump? 2. Do you put any stuff in Compartment 2 beside the skimmer and pump?

My original intent of this thread is to document my first few months of my new hobby and get some advice from nice people in the forum. It has served the purpose and want to close this thread since everything has stablized and the changes are not as frequent. I may start another thread to capture any big changes I made if needed. Maybe a monthly one instead......

This is my 8th Week update. So far I have enjoyed this new hobby tremendously. This may be my last weekly update on this thread, I wish to thank all bros who have help me by replying on this thread. Since the 4 week, the water parameters have been very consistent. My KH has been steady at 8, should I add something to increase it or I just should leave it as it is? Mid this week, I have removed 1 leather mushroom form the tank. It is becoming darker in colour and I suspected that it is dying. I do not want to take any risk at this time. I thought that Leather suppose to be easy. The 5 min Freshwater dip on my zoas have been highly effective. It is fully extended well now. Did not spot any nudis on the walls for a few days now. Another problem solved ...I think With the green slime algae gone (thanks to my Astrea snails), I think I still have the red slime algae (Cyano?) It has grown steadily since week 4 particular on 1 piece of LR (See photo below) . Since the red colour is quite nice, I have not done anything to it. Questions 1. Did I ID the algae correctly? 2. Does this red slime have any negative impact on a reef aquarium? 3. How do I remove them if I want to? My future plan will be to add 1 or 2 more corals (Torch, or frogspawn)..maybe some more mushrooms or Zoas
