Using feng shui to get my reef tank.
Evolutionz replied to Kayakkite's topic in Members Tank & Specs
wah bro, next time i want upgrade, if parents complain about "salty" again, can engage you to persuade them liao.. hahahaha.. shall show them what you said! -
long and wide, but shallow?

Any pics bro? sounds very nice! Damn i love his display tank! just nice this morning i was thinking of doing a 90x60x36cm instead of 30cm. which turns out to be around 14.5inches. But this may result in much higher cost since tank maker have to custom cut the glass. 2.5ft width would be alot nicer but my cabinet only 2ft.. Most likely im going for 3ft.. 4ft too big for me now.. thanks for sharing bro, how tall is your tank btw? -
right now i can change water everyday no problem.. only takes me just a few minutes. if i upgrade i'll probably stick to 10-15% weekly..
-
Thanks for ur advice bro. im more than happy to trim it oftenly if it grow fast! I should be upgrading soon in another month or so.. will probably give radioactive, optic fiber SPS and other montis a try.. by then there will be a chiller chilling the tank. I was wondering can i do without a dosing pump and those big bottles of water? i have to manual dose everyday to maintain ca and mg level?

yes bro, 1.5ft would not have the shallow effect.. probably will stick to 1ft height only. -

no offence, but according to my parents.. marine are very "Salty" and "dirty" thats the reason why i was not allowed to keep marine for many years when i was much younger.. now they have probably became less superstitous and even find my corals very beautiful! nice tank anyway! would be good if its a 1.5ft width.. 1ft very hard to play with. -

nice planning! and seems like you are aiming for a very similar tank size to mine! i was using my current 4x2x2 freshwater tank to visualize and i find that 1.5ft may be viable.. As for sump, my cabinet was not built to house a sump so i can only use a small tank to do so. -
Hey fellas, anyone done a really long and wide but shallow tank before? i have a 422 freshwater cabinet tank that i really want to reues the cabinet,, Im thinking of either a 3x2x1ft tank with the height being 1ft (10mm) or 4x2x1 (12mm). I love shallow tank but was wondering if it will be too shallow.. any one got a similar size for me to visualize? the 3ft will be 40g and the 4ft will be 50g.. both will be use with a overflow box and using a 34L tank for sump. Both will be mixed reef with LPS and softies as main. may have some SPS. Thanks!

luckily mine are still opening very well.. added a small colony of wild zoas weeks ago thought after FW dip and intense spotting with flash light and magnifying glass i see none. hopefully yours are all gone
-
are they big and easy to spot?
-
Thanks bro, quite alot of coraline growing but none on the wall so far. Which blue? the stardust with big palys?
-
Special thanks to kkk121 for giving me birdnest and monti frags! hopefully they wont die in my hands.. no idea if their polyp are extending.. Monti They are placed pretty high up in the tank.. added a 300l/hr pump flowing in their direction.
-
Didn't noticed dnsfpl got monti for sale.. bro kkk121 gave me a red monti to try! my nitrate still hovering at 5 - 10ppm though.. no idea why. I'll be upgrading soon and theres no way i can have any chiller or ice probe now..
-
just got the above damsel from another reefer, however no plans to have him in my tank as i just wanted the other fish he was giving.. so this is up to give to anyone who can collect tonight. 1inch +. SMS me at 9106-3934. Woodlands area FCFS.

Thanks bro for your offer.. pm-ed u! i forgot about monti.. read that they are the easiest of all SPS.. may give it a try too. my same thoughts.. thats the reason why im doing such frequent WC to maintain good parameters.. as for chiller, no way i can find space to fit a chiller to this tank now.. But will get a chiller when i upgrade.

True perc with hammer. refuses to eat pellets or even frozen mysis.. eat but spit out.. Fire & Ice zoas nice green zoas.. came with a shell clam! My frag station. Very interesting to monitor them growing from single polyps. Mohawks! Fastest growing zoas. From 1 frag, now got 3 frags.. Rics garden. Zoas garden.. Not really meant to be though... they got light shocked when i upgraded to a 7x3watts with lenses attached.. too bright probably as i placed them pretty high previously.. polyps are starting to opening after i shifted them to the ground. GSP on surface skimmer pipe. This coral grows really fast! covering the whole pipe soon. Planning to add 2 more fishes (week by week) 1 - Yasha goby + Pistol shrimp pair 2 - Tail spot blenny. Thats all for today!
-
Thats great to hear! with such frequent WC im doing, is this going to replace enough Ca and mg for the SPS? at most going to try 1 or 2 frags actually.. till i upgrade to a 2ft before trying out more. of the 3 i mentioned, which is the easiest to keep? maybe i should start with that.

Update : Added a pair of True Perc from sealife 3 days ago and 1 went missing the next day.. took out my frag station, and tried to look for every corner i can without having to lift my LR but i just couldn't find it.. Left with one fella who is currently just about to host on a hammer coral. Added a small Red Mandarin goby today.. Bought from ah beng. Honestly i was just looking at the mandarin housed in the small containers with no intention to buy as i know they are hard to get it to feed. But saw this particular fella flaring and coloring up nicely and appears to be not too skinny so i decided to take the risk. i have seeded the tank with copepods weeks ago and bought another bag today.. my glass tank walls are full of pods! Lovely mandarin pecking at pods right after dripping and pouring into tank. just nice i shifted one small rock on top of 2 to build a small cave yesterday and the mandarin decided this shall be his home. for the past few hours, he's been hanging out around here pecking at pods nearby. not too shy to venture out too! I've been reading up alot and prepared to train it to eat frozen food.. meanwhile will continue to buy pods too. Next up, i've once upgraded my light to another par38 with 9 3W BridgeLux LEDs. this housing consist of 5 Royal Blue, 2 neutral white (4500k) and 2 violets (405-410nm). The violets really make the corals color pop! the NW also makes the tank look purplish when combined with the RB.. the violets are barely visible to our eyes. Currently using with no lenses.. they come equipped with individual lenses. FTS. Sorry for the purplish shot! its not that purple actually. my phone cant capture it well.

Hey guys, never though i would ever make a thread in this section.. I've been reefing for almost 4 months now with a 34L tank. im keeping Mainly zoas and they are opening and growing very well. Honestly, i do not have much interest in SPS as i don't really fancy them. However, there are some kinds which i really liked.. mainly Optic Fiber, radioactive pocci and birdnest. would like to know if my current set up can keep any of the 3 i mentioned? Tank size : 31x31x36cm (34L) Filtration : 1020l/hr Dolphin h-800 hang-on filter + 4.5kg Live rock + Rowaphos and purigen in a filter bag. Wavemaker : Currently none, May add a 600/900 l/hr mini wave maker. Substrate : Carib-sea live sand. Skimmer : Dymax IQ Skimmer (with sanders 2 replaced once per 3 weeks, can only get light tea color) Lighting : Par38 9 x 3 Watts BridgeLux LED. (5 Royal Blue, 2 Neutral white (4500k) and 2 Violet (405 -410nm) With no lenses. Chiling : Fan Chilled. Salt mix : DI + Red Sea Coral Pro salt. Here's my water parameters taken minutes ago : Temperature : 27 - 28C (Taken with API test kits) Ammonia : 0 Nitrite : 0 (Taken with Salifert Test kits) Nitrate : 5 - 10 Phosphate : 0 - 0.03 Calcium : 480 Magnesium : 1440 kH ; 7.6 - 8 Maintenance : Water Change : 5% on tues, thurs. 10% on saturday. (total 20% weekly). Additives : Bacteria Starter on every sat. Red Sea Reef Energy Part A & B 0.2ML Daily. Can Any of the above 3 SPS grow well in my tank? i wonder if the temperature is going to be an issue. Here's my tank picture. top part of the rock structure is currently bare because my zoas are light shocked when i upgraded my light to this 9x3w Par38. Hoping to try a frag or 2 there. Anyone can advice? Thanks!
