From BBC News website about horrific experiences as sea surges hit their homes and holiday retreats. Troy Husum, a 28-year-old Canadian, was on holiday in Phuket, Thailand. He spoke of the devastation as the waves hit the town of Patong and how survivors are coping. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I felt the quake first at about 0915. I went out on my balcony in the hotel where I was staying - it was a beautifully calm day - and talked to others on their balconies. The quake felt very slight so we thought little of it. About 45 minutes later, I noticed that water had receded from Patong Bay. We'd never seen it before and we could hear people on the beach talking about it. You could even see fish flopping around on the beach, which was unusual. I noticed small kids and tourists walking to where the water had receded, curious as to why the water had gone. Then I saw it - I noticed people craning their necks and looking out on the horizon. You could see a wall of water about three or four stories high. I felt like I was watching a movie, it was completely surreal. It wasn't moving very quickly, it took between four and five minutes until I saw it hit and in that time slowly people started to realise what was happening. Most disturbing was I saw people literally disappear when the water hit... people were literally swept away People were saying 'Oh God, what is that?' I thought I was dreaming. After a few seconds the wave hit and smashed against the beach. It was incredible, it actually bent the trees, washed everything away - at least 1,000 beach umbrellas were swept along as all the water surged through. There is a line of cars where people park by the beach and hundreds of bikes, I saw them all picked up like toys and moved along. Most disturbing was I saw people literally disappear when the water hit. I saw a lot running, but there were people snoozing on the beach, I saw small children hit. People were literally swept away. A lot of injuries occurred from people being hit by debris from cars, from bikes. Running for safety I thought I should get some pictures because I was staying on the fourth floor of my hotel, but other people on the balconies said we had to get on the roof. I grabbed my equipment and ran outside into the hall. People were screaming "Go! Go!" I ran up the stairs and saw the water coming. It flowed up to the third floor, you could see it in the stairwell, some people were completely wet. We watched the chaos from the roof. The water had already started to recede as we got there. The hardest part for survivors was actually when water receded - the undercurrent sucked people back into the ocean. Bodies The most frightening part was not the wave - it was the panic that ensued. They are still pulling people out of the debris, one was a small Thai girl - she must have been there all night but she was still alive Send us your experiences There were car accidents, people were trying to escape as everyone was positive another wave was coming. People - mainly local Thais - went up the roads to the mountain and slept up there for safety. Within an hour I went back to the beach. I saw bodies. The rescue crews were panicking and there was not much control. Bodies were pulled from the debris - most had clearly drowned. I also saw a number of fractures - one tourist had a very badly broken arm. You could constantly hear helicopters - they flew up to about one kilometre out to sea to try to rescue people. Last night most hotels allowed tourists to sleep for free in their lobbies or by the pool and there was still a lot of fear and misinformation about other waves. Aftermath This morning the cleanup started. All the foreigners are in disbelief, there are two or three feet of sand in all these devastated restaurants. There are piles and piles of rubble deep inland - it looks like a bomb has gone off. Some bars I went to the night before on the beach are completely gone,. All of the palm trees were flatted or removed. How is water capable of doing that? They are carting out hundreds of cars and bikes and the streets are still covered with sand. They really should have cordoned off the streets. There has been a little looting, some last night and today. I saw guys with televisions and computers. There are people staggering around with injuries, I saw a girl with bandage on her head. Today there have also been sirens which have now died down. They are still pulling people out of the debris. One was a small Thai girl - she must have been there all night but she was still alive.

http://straitstimes.asia1.com.sg/sub/singa...,292727,00.html? Wonder anyone here is involved in the project. Apparently, clams breeding is also on going. Seems like sea horse can clam may not be so hard to come by soon.

Dun feed ur fishes for the next few days. They can survive fine without food 4 at least 3-4 days. Since u have SPS, guess black out period is not possible but try to reduce it to maybe 6hrs? Also on lights, how old are ur bulbs. Read somewhere that old blubs tend to cause algae outbreak also. Juz my 2cts. JC

Flashlight Fishes, Soapfishes And Eels

Not sure if the fishes u interested in are list in thes chart. ANyway, for your reference. -
Just wanted to share some info that I found previously on Clownfish.
-
The phrase from LiveAquaris is pretty obvious; "The Ocellaris Clownfish is often confused with the Percula Clownfish. Unless you are experienced with both fish, they are difficult to tell apart. The True Percula is a very bright orange, whereas, the Ocellaris tends to be more drably colored. The Percula Clownfish also has a thicker black outline to its white body stripes." A foolproof fish? Try chromis. Hardy and not aggressive.

One piece of advise. Only add one of two fishes per week after your tank is cycled. THis is because after add any fish, ur tank will go through a mini cycle again to cope with the bioload from new fish. Btw, how big is ur tank and how many LR did u get? Cose the amount of LR will affect the whole biological filtration thus cycling. Happy Reefing and Merry Christmas.
-
Actually, if I'm not wrong ur LR is already cured from a previous reefer. Thus your cycling maybe less than 4 weeks, probably 2 weeks. Of course, to play safe, let it cycle 4 weeks or more. What is impt is to see the peak and drop in NH4 and NO2. When NO3 is down to zero, you'll see NO3 start accumulating. You may den try a hardy fish like common clownfish. Its a hardy fish. I attached one of my archve on new tank setup for your reference. Starting_a_Foolproof_Saltwater_Aquarium.doc

Need Advice on Water Temp & Chiller
jc85 replied to Felix Wong's topic in New to the Marine Aquaria Hobby
I dun really bother abt the temp difference when using the hydrometer. 30 degree should be ok for most fishes. Maybe u can consider using fan to reduce the temp by another 1 - 2 degree. -
1. I do not really care abt the temp difference. Juzt make sure that u maintain ard 1.023 will be fine. 2. Dun bother. Juz let the tank cycle normally. After 4weeks, it will be ready. 3. No. It should not affect. Note that top up is only fresh water. Will advise u to use RO/DI water if poosible. I only let my water age with dechlorine solution. 4. 29degree should be fine for most soft coral. 5. I'll recommend start testing for NH4 now. You will see a peak soon. After the peak, NO2 will start. Both NH4 and NO2 will drop till zero. This is the time you can add fish in slowly. Test for NO3, it will be increasing. Then it is time to start ur NO3 removal plans. 6. Let ur tank cycle proper. many times, shortcut causes more problem. 7. It means that the LR is already cured. This may reduce your cycling process. The purple algae is coraline algae which desirable to most reefer.

T5 can play with colors and kelvin easily. Running cost may not be lower than MH. Important factors to consider when deciding; 1) Depth of ur tank. If >2ft, better use MH. 2) Space or budget $$ to acquire chiller? Note the cost to run a chiller also. I myself is using 6 tubes of T5 for my <1ft deep tank. Using 2 Ac fan to cool. Manage to maintain 25 - <29 degree. During the cool season (like yr end), I switch off one of the fan. Disadvantage is top up is pretty high, ~ 4 litres per day. Cheers JC

After reading the whole thread, I'm still puzzled abt which part on AquaZ is still not clear? Their product as in detailed info or who manufacture them? If its the latter, it has been answered being Aquaz had confirmed its an OEM. No company will tell you that they OEM from whom for simple reason, competition. Let have a simple example, does IBM or HP tells the consumer that they also OEM monitors? If its about products information, you may want to highlight exactly which part are missing athought I believe most company will not tell u the details (trade or propietary info) except those on the lables . Cheers JC
