since u are using marine salf and not nsw, i strongly recommend u dose bacteria. it will help to shorten the cycling time drastically. i used prodibio's biodigest when i started my tank a year ago and it worked for me. i started adding fishes after only 3 days and corals after 5 days. everyone of the ls survived. and as far as water is concerned, feel free to just use tap water. i tested our tap water before - NO3 and PO4 were both untraceable. i have since been using tap water for my wc everytime but i leave the tap water to stand for at least 3 days before the wc to allow the chlorine to dissipate. for smaller wc, i have no qualms about using our tap water straight and have never experienced any problems. hope this helps.

Solution to Nuisance Algae
reefcrazy replied to sparks1107's topic in Disease treatment/parasite/pest control
I had the same problem a few months ago and tried many methods without avail. Then I came across this product called AlgaeX from Fauna Marin. After two weeks, all the nusance algae dissappeared. I got it from Henry at MarineLife but saw it available at Petmart too. You may want to try this if others don't work. I think it's a lot less painful solutiion than constant water change or switching off your lights that may have bad consequences on your LS. -
Do you believe in adding bacteria cultures to your tank
reefcrazy replied to Gouldian's topic in General Reefkeeping_
I use Prodibio's Biodigest regularly. It works very well for me. I also dose Prodibio's Bioptim. It keeps the bacteria healthy. -
hi bro, can show a pic of your skimmer pls? how big izzit, huh?

Dear Reefers, Does anyone have experience with using garlic to boost the immunity level of fishes? I heard of this some time ago and even attempted once with some garlic pills (that you have to grind to powder) that I found to be very inconvenient and ineffective. Hence I have not been using garlic until recently when I stumbled on a product called Garlic Elxir from Ecosystem. It comes in a small tube (a bit like ###### wash) and it's not cheap. That's why I hesitated for a while before deciding to buy. My rationale was - even if it only helps to save me one or two fishes, it would be worthed it. I have not had a lot of luck with certain fishes like powder blue and regal tangs. Somehow, fishes that look scaleless tend to be very susceptible to white spots or ick but I do like these fishes very much as I think they are very beautiful and yet affordable. So, armed with this new weapon, I decided to give it another try. I went out and bought myself another regal tang. It lived alright but within 2 days, as I've expected, it's body started showing white spots and patches. From what I understand, when fishes come under stress, their immunity level drop and they become more susceptible to diseases like ick. And my guess is, the less scaled fishes are more at risk because they do not have big protective scales to protect their bodies. This is just my own derivation. Perhaps some more experienced reefers can correct me here. And from what I have read so far, there are no real effective medications available for marine fishes since copper cannot be used. So the only viable alternative is to try and boost the immunity level up. I thereby started feeding my fishes (particularly targeting the regal tang of course) with the Garlic Elixir. Fortunately, it wasn't cumbersome to use like the garlic pill that I tried previously. I just need to soak the frozen brine shrimps or pellets in one or two drops of Garlic Elxir for 30 mins each time before feeding the food to the fishes. After one week, to my great delight, I noticed the regal tang seemed to be eating better and the white spots seemed to have lessened. It's now two weeks since I started using garlic and guess what, the body of my regal tang is now completely blue without any white spots or blemishes. I can't say for sure that the recovery is fully due to the garlic but I am just too glad that I did not loose another regal tang this time round. In fact, it's now feeding like a pig and growing rounder by the day. I am so happy with the result that I felt compelled to share my experience with all of you. If you treasure your fishes, I would recommed that you start feeding them garlic. I would welcome any reefers who have experience using garlic to contribute to this thread and share your experience with us. And btw, don't worry about the smell. The fishes either can't smell it or they actually love the smell because they all gobble the garlic-soaked food down without any hesitation. Thank you for reading. :thanx:

hi bro/sis, sequence pumps are very reliable and high in performance. my barracuda has been running for 5+ years and has never stop a single time. i know of some other reefers with the same experince running other models like hammerhead. if your tank is going to be at least 5 ft in length, i would say go for it. hope this helps.

hi bros & sis, i am using the american made Barracuda and Dart from Reeflopumps. if u want real power, these pumps are unbeatable. mine is so powerful that i had to reduce their speeds just to balance the backflow. not sure about power consumption tho cos i m no good at this kind of calculation. but Reeflopumps claim their pumps are the quietest and and most power efficient in their classes.

Can show pic of your LR pls?

hi james, according to the instruction manual, you can increase dosage of biodigest for quicker result. for new tank, you can even dose at 1 amp per 60 liters of water plus one more for the sump. no worries from overdose.

hi bro, how old are your eqpts pls? i m interested in your artica chiller. any way to show some pics pls? tks. -
hi jameshong, i had the same experience with dosing biodigest. i did check with the a-reef boss and he explained to me that it was normal. our skimmer don't always produce the same amount of skimmage since it all depends on how much waste there is in the water. when we dose biodigest, the bacteria helps to clear much of the waste hence leaving little for the skimmer. i think that makes a lot of sense. it's also very comforting to see signs of the bacteria working immediatey after we dosed. at least we know the stuff works. cheers.

hi bro rockyboy, u think it's psychological? don't know leh, my tank does seem clearer even though i have been adding more liverstock. in the past, i could never keep torch corals cos' they always don't open up in my tank. this time round, it looks ok (touch wood). my 2 months old tube anemone also looks happier. even my friends said so. i will continue to monitor and hope the improvement will continue.

hi bro, you are correct. i bought a box of biokit reef from a-reef and it came with biodigest, bioptim, reefbooster, iodi+ and stronti+. so i just followed the instructions and dose everything. according to sam of a-reef, there is no problem with dosing everything at the same time.
