  2. Hey buddy...Good to hear from you. We should meet up one of these days. I've since decomm my office tank. Left with with this one at home.
  3. In general, the more vigorous your water movement is, the better it is to push suspended particles into the overflow. In that sense, a wavemaker will typically do a better job at this task. However, you need to give considerations to your LS when adjusting water flow. With regards to down pipe, for example, a single 2" down pipe can take much greater volume than 2x1" down pipe. So you shouldn't just be looking at the numbers of down pipe. Your down pipe sizing is dependent on your return flow. Too thick a down pipe, you get water trickling down, too thin, you risk flooding. http://www.aquariumpros.ca/modules/Overflow_Drain_Calculator/index.php Folks have multiple down pipes for redundancy. In the event 1 is stuck, the 2nd one should take over in the interest of flood prevention.
  4. I don't think it's going to make much difference because the rate of water entering your overflow box remains the same. Below should give you better results: - Increase flow of your return pump - Add an underflow (provided it's a BB) - Adjust or add wave maker to flush away suspended particles - Use filter sock in your sump
  5. What happened to the rest of your LRs? Inside sump tank? Anyway, I like your current scape, except for the right piece leaning against the glass.
  6. Bro, based on the fishes you have, I feel that Orsony's tank may just meet your need. Quickly grab liao.
  7. http://www.howmanyfish.com/#page=page-1 you have to do some measurement.
  8. Yes, I'm all for the use of refugium too. Like I said, it depends on what skimmer you're using. You need to trial & error on this. ok, you can perform this test to see for yourself. (1) Setup your skimmer with original pump in a bucket of water. (2) Turn it on & observe the amount of water coming out of the skimmer outlet. (3) Detach the pump from skimmer & connect pump's outlet to a flexible hose. (4) Turn on the pump in the bucket of water & observe the amount of water exiting the hose. You will notice (2) gives you much less flow cause much of the work is used for creating bubbles.
  9. Thanks for showing the diagram. It's much clearer now. Below is what I can see from this setup: Pros: - Pump running out of water contributing to less heat transfer. - Lower power consumption due to skimmer pump performing 2 functions. (i.e. skimmer + return) Cons: - The higher placement of the skimmer will definitely requires a stronger pump. (This may cancel off the power consumption benefit above) - You'll need to prime the pump every time to get it started.(Your pump will be damaged from running dry after a power outage) - Difficult to secure pump at edge of tank.(Pump contacting glass may be noisy) - Pump & skimmer requires regular cleaning since detritus flows thru' them before mechanical filtration in the sump. - Flow rate in sump is low as pump is sucking in more air than water.
  10. Bro, it's difficult to visualize from above description. Can't tell if your skimmer body is sitting in the display tank, or in the sump, or hanging outside both tanks. (1) If the main purpose of the sump is just to house the skimmer, then you're going thru' too much trouble. Instead, just getting a HOB skimmer for your tank would do the job. (2) Every off-the-shelf skimmer is designed for certain pump specs. Example: An in-sump skimmer design may not skim well if you place the pump out of water. You may have to trial & error with different pumps.
  11. Since you indicated just "gobies, angelfishes and clowns... ", it is possible to do away with chiller for a FOWLR setup. Using fan is a cheaper option.
  12. Anyone got lobang for HP Touchpad?

  13. Alternatively, you can get Linus's 1.5 cube set, then have tank maker like Vincent to construct an external overflow with sump for you. You'll need to: (1) Try to get an estimated quote on the additional work required. (2) If you're ok with the price, then arrange with Vincent to view the cube set together to confirm on the proposed work & price before buying it.

Yah..heh..heh...a little more friendly after I started conversing in Cantonese. But that's not important to me. All I wanted is a tank done the way I wanted it, & he delivers.

One choice is Kwong Ling at Kelantan Rd. Bring along your detail drawing. If you plan to drill hole in your sump, bring along the pipe fitting to ensure hole is the right size.
  16. Thanks for the comment. Yes, I plan to add some hardy corals, but at a very slow pace. BTW, NO3 reading has dropped from 80ppm to 10ppm after introducing chaeto into my sump for half a year. Thanks Wilson At this level, it's still not not suitable for many coral types. I hope to reduce it further.
  17. It's been eons since my last update. Here it goes... (1) Corals The mushies are doing well on my frag tray. Under full lighting Under blue LED I got myself a few zoas some time ago, & surprisingly they're still alive. Also wanted to try GSP, hence got one from Ah Beng a few months ago. Could not quite capture their luminescence under blue light. Believe me, it's much better than what you see on camera. (2) LR If you compare with my previous FTS, you'll notice I've done a little rescape to bring the corals closer to the lights, & to accommodate the piece of GSP. (3) Equipment I've switched to LED to give myself some experience with the new technology. I've replace 4xT5 with a LumenAqua 300 & 2 additional strips of DIY blue LED. Overall it's not as bright as the T5, but the shimmering effect is undeniable. My tangs needed a few days to get use to the new lighting.
  18. Kwong Ling at Kelantan Road does picture frames as well as customizes fish tanks. In fact, I ordered my sump tank from Kwong Ling. However, it specializes solely on glass. I'm afraid you'd have to get your lightnings separately.
  19. Sorry about your lost bro. Did you find out what caused the power trip?

  21. gobies and clowns are generally ok for a small 24g nano tank if you stay within the number. Angelfishes especially those non-dwarf species can exceed 1 foot in size when grown. So you have to choose carefully. A 1.5ft cube tank is approximately 25g in capacity. Feeding its dimension into below formula gets you 7 inches worth of fish. That's about 2-3 gobies or clowns the system can safely support. http://www.howmanyfish.com/#page=page-1 Below is a site where you can check out the fishes you may like to keep. Generally, many fishes are not suitable to be kept in a small nano tank. This is part of the research every reefer needs to do before going out on livestock shopping. http://www.liveaquaria.com/product/aquarium-fish-supplies.cfm?c=15 Just for good measure, below is the link to fish compatibility chart. http://www.liveaquaria.com/general/compatibility_chart.cfm
  22. No body say you cannot have 2 parts of a sump tank with piping to join them thru' a hole drilled in your center panel. Show us some photos with measurement of your cabinet interior. Maybe we can figure out some workable solution. BTW, does your 3 footer come equipped with a built-in overflow?
  23. Your female maroon clown has grown!!! She's been snatching most of the food you throw in there?
  24. You list looks ok. I would introduce the angels & tangs the last. http://www.liveaquaria.com/general/compatibility_chart.cfm However, your tank water surface area is calculated to support 18" worth of marine fishes. That works out to about an average of just 1.8" of fish for your 10 fishes. I think you may have to reconsider the number of fishes you want to keep. http://www.howmanyfish.com/#page=page-1
