Hi bro, Welcome to reefing. Below are some personal observation. Cycling Overcrowded already, don't add anymore LS. I suspect your cycling has yet to complete. Pls. check your NH3, NO3, & NO2 level. BTW, you shouldn't have put in the damsel even though it cost little. The toxic level in the water goes up during cycling & the fella suffers. Equipment Overhead filter is more suited for fresh water setup. Most marine nano uses HOB filter when there's no option for IOS or sump. Nevertheless, give it a try since you've already invested in it. You can do away with the ceramic rings & bio-balls. I've previously used that Resun protein skimmer. It'll give you much micro-bubbles in your main display. Below is what I tried in my previous nano & it works better this way, while reducing the clutter in the main display.(pic below) That pair of LED is not sufficient if you're planning for corals later. BTW, try to keep water temperature around 26-27C for long term coral health. You may need to invest in a chiller if you're serious in keeping corals. All the best.

I'm sure your nitrate level has gone down.

WTS: 5 feet Tank with Cabinet and Sump

Have some inquiries about the tank. Below is some additional details. The thicker wood paneling on the left side of the tank conceals 2 compartments. The overflow compartment is at the left rear corner. The left front compartment is an overflow box for additional circulation. It can be converted into a wave box with some customization. -

Anybody's guess. Further Google revealed more info. http://www.advanced-aquariums.com/filtration_equipment.php?sec=ff

Sunsun have both magnetic or suction cups base.

Filter sock is typically designed for sump use where overflow piping feeds directly into the round sock opening. Modifying it for IOS tank use is not easy. You need not use filter wool once you have filter sock.

Do I need to match my return pump to my Protein Skimmer
tunicate replied to ad0911's topic in New to the Marine Aquaria Hobby
Nope. Your skimmer should have its own pump. No relationship to your return pump. -
From my past experience, snails stay put before they die off. It's not a good sign. Check your nitrate level. That's what killed my snails in my previous nano.

Consideration of making way for Lights

Generally, these are the benefits of using LED. In terms of saving $$, getting from pasa malam should be of you good value. Just have to keep you eyes open. Cheers, -

You can consider getting a DI filter to mix your own salt water. This way, you also have more control over the water quality. -
I'd say do a proper overflow. Drill it.

Hi bro, Just like to confirm 'cause the pic you showed looks more like the 110-F2000 model. Below is the comparison pic: H&S 110-F2000 Protein Skimmer H&S 150-F2000 Protein Skimmer -
Is my tank still live and fit for livestock?
tunicate replied to Chippie's topic in General Reefkeeping_
Yes, it does help, especially if you dose bacteria to help kick start the nitrogen cycle. -

Your new LS would probably cost more than those few gallons of stale salt water. Why risk it? Just start afresh. -
Noise is quite subjective unless one measures it with a dosimeter. And it matters if the pump is located in an enclosed cabinet or not, or if the pump is running in-sump, or out-sump.
-
I think best place to put chiller is outside the cabinet. If can pipe it out to the balcony, better still.

Well I've had a 1250 previously in my old IOS tank. It hardly made a sqweak. One of the quietest pump I'v experienced.

Need advice: Coral chip to sand
tunicate replied to edneo's topic in New to the Marine Aquaria Hobby
In the interest of retaining most of the beneficial bacteria in the crushed corals, the quickest way is just to lay er it with sand. So the key word here is "quickest". Subsequently, depending on the overall depth of the substrate, one can probably treat it like a DSB. There're reasons why some might consider this method, like : (1) Wanting to convert to a finer substrate look in the main display. (2) Decides to keep fishes like some wrasse, or snails, star fishes that needs sand. (3) Want to control level of NO3 using DSB. BTW, I've seen algae growth on tanks with sand bottom too. But for me, if I want a DSB, I'd probably do the following instead: (1) Relocate LS to temporary holding tank. (2) Remove all coral chip & UG from main display. (3) Gently rinse out the coral chip with tank water during WC. (4) Place coral chip into a basket & leave it in the sump. (5) Introduce sand into main display. (can take opportunity to re-scape if needed) (5) Let system run for a few days & swap filter socks. (6) Test water parameter to make sure things are ok before re-introducing LS. Voila! But having said all that, I'm still a BB guy. I prefer using chaeto than DSB to control NO3. But that's just me.
