heh heh...You mean "How to revive dead rock?" I just rinse it during a water change session, & put them back into the tank with those 'live' ones. It's purple again after a few months. Would probably have been more effective if I had dosed some bacteria during then.

Algae Blenny losing weight.
tunicate replied to girlanimated's topic in FOWLR (Fish-only with Live-rock)
My Algae Blenny was hard working & did a good job cleaning up my tank's algae, but mysteriously stopped eating after a few months & up lorry. Haizz.. so sad. The pair of spotted cardinal wasn't even remotely interested in my blenny at all. -
Cannister or Hang on the Back filter
tunicate replied to kenny1111's topic in New to the Marine Aquaria Hobby
Yes, I also agree with Ingwe about a canister pump contributing more heat into your water. But it'll probably be ok if you're planning for a chiller. Get a thermometer to keep track of your water temperature. -

help on feeding blue and yellow tang

Hi bro CFOh, Quick question on garlic solution. The link for Kent Marine Garlic Xtreme says "contains no artificial ingredients or steroids". Do you think it's similar if we pound our own garlic from the market? Thanks in advance -
Cannister or Hang on the Back filter
tunicate replied to kenny1111's topic in New to the Marine Aquaria Hobby
Based on your tank size(about 81 liters), you can opt for a HOB filter for easier maintenance. There are lots to choose from at places like C328. Try to pick one that has a built-in surface skimmer. However, a HOB filter is hardly going to move sufficient volume of your 81L marine FOWLR. So, you might need to also get a wave maker. Live rocks can play a part to help with biological filtration, but make sure base glass is well supported, & don't rest the rocks against your thin 6mm vertical pieces. Lastly, a HOB protein skimmer will play a big part to maintain water quality if you do not plan to do water changes every few days. That's about it. -

Then keep it simple. You don't even need a chiller.

Hi Fleek, There're risk of flooding once your plumbing gets complex. If you only intend to keep fishes in your 30L, there's probably no need for a chiller if water temp is below 31C. A simple hang-on filter together with your existing skimmer would take care of things. Then, you only need to hook up 130L --> canister filter --> chiller --> back to 130L. You need only 1 pump with sufficient power to push water through this loop. Your UV flow needs to be slower to be effective, hence a much smaller pump. (Of course you can also T-off from your main pump with a flow control to the UV, but that would require a bit more DIY plumbing.) What I've described above are 2 separate systems where your floor should be quite safe from flooding even during a power outage. Alternatively, there is a lot more research & work involve if you go the whole 10 yards for a proper Tank-with-sump system. If you do go down this path, below are some of the questions you'll be asking: (1) Cost to drill main tank + overflow construction + 30L tank conversion to sump + plumbing (2) Is there an existing cabinet for 130L to accommodate the 30L sump below? Needs to drill cabinet too. (3) Is the 30L sufficient to contain back flow from 130L during power outage? Purchase new sump tank? (4) Cost of new return pump (5) ....other details... At the end of the day, you'll have a ballpark figure on how much effort & $ is needed. Some people enjoys DIY, but others may just opt to purchase whole system pre-configured. You'll have to decide.

Thanks for the tip on salt. Is there a thread on this "sulphur beads in a 1.5l coke bottle"? I'd like to read up more. DE Lighting 4 x 24W

Yep, no chiller No shrimps Can't really tell, it's been a while since I last check my nitrate/nitrite levels. Maybe I'll change my media bag less often. Just ran out of CoralLife salt.

I'm running a 2 footer FOWLR at home. Daily live stock feeding. I top up 1.5 liters every couple of days to deal with evaporation. Week end filter wool replacement + skimmer cup cleaning + additive. Monthly water change. Quarterly carbon & PhosGuard media replacement. That's about it.

Help needed - Changing of Hang-On filter
tunicate replied to andez07's topic in New to the Marine Aquaria Hobby
Welcome back In addition, a little pump would come in handy if your filter motor finally quits on you in spite of your knocking & shaking. Just throw it into your tank to keep the water circulating while your go find a filter replacement. My office tank's hang-on filter motor failed me after 2 years. Had to rush over to C328 during lunch break. Lucky I have a spare pump. Good luck. -

Help - what is this white flower growing out from my LR?

Looks like aptasia. http://saltaquarium.about.com/od/aiptasiaanemoneprofiles/iAiptasiai_Anemones_Photos_Profile_Information.htm -
Hi limsc, I've been running my Eheim 1250 out of the water for over 2 years. Being an IOS tank, I'd have to turn it off during water changes. Otherwise, it'll start sucking air when water level in main tank drops below pump's outlet nozzle. Even though I later fill up water in the main tank, there still remains a pocket of air in the pump chamber. I have to use a siphon at the outlet nozzle to kick-start the pump. You'd probably will not encounter this issue if you position your Eheim as per bro onizuka's diagram. (diagram of my pump setup in below link.) http://www.sgreefclub.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=68987&pid=755155&mode=threaded&start=#entry755155

Hi anothermix, I tend to agree with 77tj since you "want to try it out" with $2xx budget. Attached is my cheapo $100 office tank. It's been running for over 2 yrs. (1) I moded the little skimmer into the hang-on filter to keep things simple. (2) The hood is just an upside down paper tray my colleague threw away. I put in the lights. (3) ...last by not least, the office air-con help out so I don't need to invest on a chiller. Some food for thought, I hope?
