  1. A short clip I recorded of my tank inhabitants. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hbdlwU8hgdk
  2. This is how the sump looks like now. Left side is refugium containing LR & a basket of chaeto. Right side filter sock & skimmer compartment. Front & last compartment contains a basket of bio filtration + carbon
  3. I went thru' not less than half a dozen of re-scape in my 1st tank over a period of 3 years. I was able to do so mainly because I did not use any epoxy, stacking LRs a little differently each time. Though I understand that in your case, the look you're trying to achieve may not be possible just by stacking LR together. I currently use cable ties to secure my tonga branches instead. They're easier to cut away if need be. P.S. There's another thread referring to the use of fiberglass rod on LR.
  4. I hope you've better luck than I do with the sexy shrimps.
  5. Talk about sexy shrimp, I bought 4 for my office tank last August. This is what happened... Put in 1st one (I called it the Scout). It gave me the all clear sign after 2 weeks. Put in the remaining 3 (I called them the Main Body). A few days later, I noticed a bobbit worm coming out of a piece of LR, creeping towards one of the shrimps. With its tail held high waving, its like saying, "Hi! I'm over here. My name's Ah Boon. What's yours?" Needless to say, Main Body disappeared over one weekend. Scout managed to held out for an extra week before it too left without a trace. Funny thing is I've kept those LR for past 3 years & never once did the worm hinted its presence. Sigh ....
  6. Without skimmer, you'll need a more frequent water change regime. Based on the tank dimension you provided, you are looking at about 18 liters(10%) of water per change per week. You'll need to factor in the long term effort, time & material cost. In this hobby, easy maintenance is as important as having clean water. The choice is yours. Without chiller, yeah, I think it's quite ok.
  7. I stopped using the Tunze Universal Mini Pump in my office tank as it contributed too much heat over a non-aircon weekend. If you have a webcam, hook it up to your PC to take a photo of your tank's thermometer every hour over the weekend for 1st few weeks of monitoring. It gave me a pretty good idea of how the water temperature in my office tank fluctuates over a non-aircon weekend. (Note: May-July period tends to be warmer.)
  8. Analyse your maintenance routine to see how phosphate or silicate find its way into your tank.
  9. Red mushies don't like my office tank. They shrink, float away, then dissolved, poof! Being a BB tank, I guess there's no place to take root once they're washed to the bottom. On the other hand, hairy mushrooms seems to be quite happy in my tank. They're multiplying in numbers.
  10. Nope, mine seems to be fixed to the impeller body. (There's probably a catch inside that locks it in place.)
  11. Try holding the impeller with 2 fingers on both rubber ends. Give the impeller a spin with your other hand. Does it spin smoothly , or can you see the impeller body moving off the axis shelf back & forth? If it's doing the latter, you'd probably need to replace the impeller. BTW, what is your skimmer & pump model?
  12. Sorry my spelling mistake. Should have been "ich" instead.
  13. No wonder I've got no itch. My fowlr's got no chiller. ...& it rhymes too
  14. I was trying to visualize how much difference it's going to be. Below is what I got with the help from LiveAquaria's pic. I had the experience of visiting a reefer advertising a 2" fish which turned out to be 4" whooper . He was sitting there describing how nice a specimen it was. I didn't know whether to laugh or cry at that point.
  15. Bro, have you tried using chopsticks? .....well maybe the longer ones people used for deep frying.
  16. Hi all, This may seem like a stupid question, but I found 2 kinds of fish measurement on the web (i.e. Total Length & Standard/Fork Length). Would just like to know what is the accepted convention in SGreef. Example: When a fellow reefer post on the forum to sell a 3 inch Dispar Anthias, does it generally mean 3 inches from the : a. "tip of the snout to the tip of the longer lobe of the caudal fin"(Total Length)? OR b. "tip of the snout to the center of the fork in the tail."(Standard/Fork Length)? It does really make a substantial difference especially for fishes with longer tails. Below are the reference sites to the fish measurement info I was trying to find out: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fish_measurement http://myfwc.com/RULESANDREGS/Saltwater_Regulations_Measurement.htm
  17. I was also trying to figure out how many fishes my tank can support & came across below web calculator. http://www.howmanyfish.com/ Anyway, I also keyed in dimension for JBJ 24g, & it came back with 7 inches worth of marine fishes. Is it too conservative in its estimation?
  18. All items sold. Thread closed. Wishing all a happy CNY
  19. My thoughts are: If whatever that the skimmer is churning out is flowing back into the water column, it's going to circulate back into your skimmer. Then theoretically whatever is causing it to overflow will continue to do so. I'll raise the skimmer higher until I can extract some decent skimmate. After which, things should normalize.
  20. I changed to a new filter sock (forgetting to rinse it 1st ), & my BM overflowed too. Had to lower the water level for about an hour before it slowly stabilized. It's sensitive yeah?
  21. BTW, does your tank have sand, or BB? I'm not experienced with sand but not sure if the casualty may be the result of toxic released when disturbing the sand bed? Anyway, I rescaped my BB tank a coupled of times with the fishes inside & it turned out ok. Somehow, they know how to siam to another corner while I work on the LR. I couldn't see too clearly due to the dust swirling in the water, & worried that I might have crushed some poor fish hiding next to a LR. To cut a long story short, it's a stressful ordeal for both the fishes & me, but we made it thru'. Tip: If you need to temporarily remove your tank lighting to do the scaping, then you'll need to prepare for alternate lightings (on the side maybe). I was practically half blind with both my arms in the tank, wishing my eyes were growing out of my belly button instead.
  22. Are you planning for lights over the tank too? If so, this fan placement will block off some of your lights reaching into the tank.
