Sorry, that's not a good idea because detritus will build up over time clogging the sponge. Tank will eventually flood.

I'm not sure if anyone tried it, but would placing a sponge solve your problem? (pic below) ***Be ready for contingency if you're giving it a try.

Have you discussed this with the LFS where your purchased this overflow box from? You need to know if it's a product defect or setup issue.
