  1. This is just my opinion. When I need to do some maintenance in the sump, I'd prefer to have minimal water in there for better access to equipment. Too much water due to back flow will result in lots of splashing as I dismantle equipment for cleaning & putting them back. So I'll end up cursing myself for making a mess. So to avoid all that, I'll still go with ball valves on both ends of the piping.
  2. Heh heh...just some preliminary thoughts. Chinese saying "Throw bricks to attract jades." "filter wool"? Ah, I forget to label the triangular object on the right as filter sock. My bad. Have a good weekend.
  3. Hi All, I currently have a clump of chaeto in my sump's refugium. However, I feel that it's not receiving optimal lighting as the refugium is rather deep. So I did some sketching for my next sump design. Pls. feel free to comment on it. P.S. I don't need much equipment in the sump as it's just for a FOWLR tank. Thanks in advance
  4. Have a spare pump to clear. 5. Since you included tunze 9002, then BMQQ can also be an option.
  6. Do you have any pumps running in the water? Not all pumps are created equal. Some run warmer than others. And for a nano like yours, it may make a difference. Show us some photos of your tank if possible.
  7. Everything taken. Thread closed.
  8. ...and chaeto too if anyone needs some.
  9. If there're shops near your house that sell Toyogo boxes, you can try to get one as a temporary sump. Get a plastic rectangular basket with hanging hooks. Put filter wool in it as a pre-filter.
  10. $800 is possible, but not all stuff would be new. Do more research in Pasa Malam on each of the pieces you'd like to get.
  11. You can custom make one at Kwong Ling Frame Maker. Price should be reasonable. Bring along your drawings, or cardboard model if possible. Address is: 3 Kelantan Road (S)208601 Tel: 62940531
  12. Have following to give away: (1) 5kg of LR (2) 11.5kg of coral chips A token coral frag would be appreciated. Otherwise, just a thank you would suffice. Collection at Katong area. PM me if keen. If no takers, I'd dispose them in a couple days time. Cheers,

  14. Firstly, you need to size up your sump dimension. Factors influencing this would be your cabinet & door size, as well as if you plan to have equipment sitting outside your sump tank (e.g. return pump, skimmer, CA reactor,...etc) So assume the above is done. Now a typical sump has 3 compartment.(i.e. 1st pre-filter using wool or filter sock, 2nd for skimmer & reactors, lastly for return pump, chiller pump) It is possible to combine compartment 1 & 2 if you're using filter sock. Water flowing from skimmer compartment into return pump compartment should go under the 1st baffle. (if you have space, let it go under-over, or under-over-under.) Personally, space between baffles need not be too big. (Hint: Look at cross-section of your overflow piping size exiting into your sump. Compare it with the cross-section of the gap between your baffles.) If space allows, some people create an additional refugium partition to cultivate chaeto for nutrient export. Water flowing out of this compartment should go over a baffle to prevent stuff from entering into last compartment. Install additional overflow comb if required.
  15. Below is an old photo of the tank after it converted to fresh water.
