My skunk drifts all over the tank wherever there's food. The danger I foresee if they unknowingly step into Coral Banded's backyard.
-
Unless the shrimps have lots of real estates, the coral banded may roam and wack the other shrimpies.

Avoid leaning your live rocks against glass. Your fresh water tank glass may not be thick enough to withstand the knocks. Be extra careful when you attempt to rescape.

conversion of cabinet for sump
tunicate replied to Spencer Lim's topic in New to the Marine Aquaria Hobby
Hi Hock Meng, Below is what I think: - You should be able to remove the right side shelving. - The center vertical partition is probably designed to support the tank, so I think you should not remove that. - So what you can do is put in 2 sumps connected with a thick short piping, with a hole drilled thru' the center vertical partition. The connecting pipe has to be thick so that water level on both sump stays the same. Just make sure the seals for this piping is good to prevent leaks. - Sump 1 can contain: filter sock, skimmer, FR, bio-reactor,...etc - Sump 2 can contain: refugium, which overflows into return pump compartment. Have fun. -
Full siphon should take up about 90% of flow. Remaining 10% flow via pipe with air tube. Backup pipe with upturn elbow should have no water during normal operation.

Hi BC82, You setup is quite similar to BeanAnimals overflow design which profess to be silent. You can probably make some changes using its setup info. http://www.beananimal.com/projects/silent-and-fail-safe-aquarium-overflow-system.aspx All the best

I'd place the tank away from human traffic as much as possible. Look for common path between front door & kitchen, & between front door & bedroom. You don't want hand carry items bumping into the corner of the tank when rushing out, or coming home with bags of shopping.
-
I vote to keep the display cabinet intact. It looks great! Just put the tank where you originally drew it. Should be the 1st thing one sees after a day of hard work.

Yes, go green. Pls. keep us posted on your progress.

What do u put in your Overflow box?
tunicate replied to Admiraltian's topic in New to the Marine Aquaria Hobby
I'll opt for this kind of overflow so that I don't have to worry about what to put inside. -
Love your layout. How I wish I've a place like that. The part where you redrawn as "store". It would make a good fish room, yah? Just create a door between that & the toilet. Compressor for drop-in coil can hang on the outside wall.(I'm assuming this is private property?) Only thing is, how to get in & out of your master bedroom??

Perhaps can take a look at below pic. It uses a rubbish bin as sump. The pump sits in the bin to suck water from DT(via the smaller pipe). After filtration, the water overflows back into the DT(via the thicker pipe). It's effectively a huge HOB filter box, except that it's big enough to be free standing beside the DT. You can make the bin or sump as big as you want depending on the equipment you plan on deploying within it.

SPS generally needs high flow, but mushies prefer gentle flow. It's goin' to be challenging.
-
Sorry bro, I misread your reply. Thought it was 3.5m. For 3.5ft, which is slightly above 1m, A FM3500 model should suffice.
-
All the best then.
-
BTW, try to go for as large a sump as possible. This way, your return compartment can be larger & you do not have to top up water so often.
-
Based on below Jebao chart, a model FM8000 will about meet your needs.
-
Then you'll probably want to get a separate 1200l/hr pump for the chiller. What's the distance from return pump to top of your DT? Below is the table of Jebao SP3000 showing what flow you'll get at different height. http://www.jebao.com/en/displayproduct.html?proID=100988208

Hi exxe, If you plan to "hard plumb" the return over the rim of your DT, it may result in vibration noise of piping against glass. Your return PVC size should not be smaller than your return pump outlet nozzle size. Otherwise, flow will be restricted. There should also be an optimum flow rate for chiller for maximum chilling effect. Too fast, & chiller will not have sufficient time to cool down water as it gets pumped out the other end. Check with your equipment guide or seller. Cheers,

New to this hobby! And I killed a colt.
tunicate replied to viviancoco's topic in New to the Marine Aquaria Hobby
A sump would allow you to clean media & filter more easily than a canister filter on a regular basis. Read about other forumers' tank setup. It contains interesting discussions on their selection & choice of equipment used in their sump.
