Hi experts, can anyone advise if there is a lifespan for bio-filter media e.g. coral chip, bio-rings or substrate?? Since we are cultivating the bacteria with this media, rightfully I think there shouldn't be a lifespan as what the LFS told me, say about 6 months must change. If chemical filtration like activated carbon, I believe yes, there should be a lifespan cause we are talking about limited volume to contain the chemical stuff... But for bio-filter, basically the whole culturing cycle will have to reset if we change the entire filter media stuff...though some will suggest change half...but still wat is the theory behind for changing?? Thks for enlightenment...

Hi reeefers, great to know this forum, very educating and realised that I got addicted. No read cannot sleep :-P Finally I am setting up my new 4ft x 2 x x2 tank, unfortunately I cannot setup a sump tank becos of my cabinet design. As such, I intend to run 2 canisters (ehiem 2235 & Sicce Genio 3) and a in-tank filter (8" x 12") all fill with coral chips. I intend to setup a FOWLR tank with soft corals.... no sure how much bio-load my filtration system can take. In order to utilise my resources, I was thinking of running a 3rd canister as return pump to drive the chiller. My thinking is driving the chiller with a plain water pump will serve limited purpose for me. May as well drive with a canister and get the extra filtering which I lack. I am not sure if my idea is feasible, will appreciate all suggestion and recommendation (esp. the correct canister flow rate I should used to drive the chiller). BTW, can only afford a Resun CL-650 chiller now. Thks a lot
