  1. Will attempt to explain this in a meaningful and understandable way... Firstly, chillers have recommended min flow rate and max flow rate usually. The reason for this is that if the pump goes beyond the max flow rate, there would not be enough contact time to cool the water thus reducing the efficiency of the chiller. Seeing that water has to pass through a cooled copper or titanium coil, there has to be enough time spent through the length of the coil for the water to cool down....if the pump is over the recommended rate, the water will barely cool down when passing through the chiller just due to the fact that it wasn't given enough time to dissipate it's heat. On the other hand, there is a minimum flow rate with some chillers as well. I'm not a 100% certain on the reasonining for this but i believe it revolves around the fact that if the water flow is too slow, the chiller could be producing more cooling capacity than the water passing through it can absorb....thus causing freezing of the coils etc...i think. As for the overall chilling time it takes to cool down a tank..if you were to compare running a chiller on a min flow rate pump and a max flow rate pump, well, the one running on or close to the max flow rate will end up chilling the tank faster just simply due to the higher turnover of water being cooled. So bottom line, it's always better to run a chiller on a higher flowrate pump but not overly exceeding the chillers recommended max flow rate. Also remember that although the flow rate of a chiller may state 1000lph for example, using a 2000lph pump may well work seeing the possible headloss it may encounter on the way to the chiller and also while going through the chiller. So in essense a 2000lph pump may well only produce around 1000lph of flow after minusing the headloss from the journey to the chiller and also the headloss obtained from water running through the chiller coils. Hope i make sense.... cheers....
  2. What wattage PL/PC bulbs are you planning on using. Generally, light penetration for both PL/PC bulbs and T5 bulbs are effective around 1 to 1.5 feet and 2 feet would be pushing it a lil. However, most LPS should do fine with these lighting configurations if it's kepts at the top half of the tank...Seeing that your tank is 2.5ft deep, it's going to be tricky maintaining LPS on the sandbed...especially pratas and cynarinas etc....they might bleach very slowly over time. I think overall, it's a doable configuration....but u will have to note the progress of your lps closely to note for signs of bleaching....u could line the bottom with lotsa softies tho...shrooms and ricordeas etc.... HTH.....
  3. I second the suggestion for you to slow down a lil on your reefing endeavour...from what i can gather from you past few post in this forum..it's quite clear taht u haven't done enough research on this hobby...and i don't say this to put you down but to caution you. It's a common newbie mistake to think that a tank can be simply setup with cheap equipment and more sadly enough, dump an anemone in the tank as well.. Anemones are very delicate creatures that sometimes require more care than most corals....and the big mistakes made are putting them in low light conditions. The problem is, you won't see any immediate negative effects on the animal but it's more a long drawn process of slowly killing off the poor animal. It can take close to 3-6 months to kill it and it's pretty sad. They will gradually lose all their color, to put it simply, and eventually shrivel up and die on ya when they lose the ability to produce food etc... Anyways...that's something you can read up in many articles available here and on the web....but i believe the bottom line here is patience and research. Take the cues of the other younger reefers on this forum....they have done plenty of research, and in some cases probably more research than me or other older reefers. So i don't believe age is the issue here. But you need to humble yourself and fully understand the process of reefing before jumping into this blindly. Now i'm not saying that you have....and i'm sure that you have done some form of research but from your past post, the questions you ask are already clearly posted in some of the newbie threads and a quick search should give you the answers you require... Wishing you the best....but hoping you will take the right steps... cheers.. ps. Sorry...haven't answered your initial question on lights...if you want, there are shops that sell a 2ft 36watt PL fixture for around 35 bucks and i believe you can also find a dymax 2ft T5 light set with 2 NO T5 bulbs for around 40-50 bucks and that should suffice for basic low light corals....but NOT Anemones!
  4. We've been getting lotsa hot threads lately....interesting to see everyone coming out... Anyways...don't be discouraged....take some of the good comments and ignore the bad ones and learn from the mistakes of this thread...no one's against you....nor trying to scold you....u have your parents to do that...we're all here to learn and share....and some teach as well.... hang in there buddy....
  5. Chill bro...it's just a figure of speech....and it was meant as a joke... As for growing up faster...why the rush...enjoy your youth while u still have it. There are many other young reefers like yourself who's in this hobby...find out how they are going about affording this hobby and maybe you can get a few tips. But for your info, this hobby really doesn't need to be expensive...you can always setup a basic tank without all the frills and concentrate on doing regular water changes and constant monitoring of your water parameters. As for livestock...there are places where u can find fairly cheap livestock...and maybe u can start there if you can't find ppl who wanna give you their livestock.. And as a tip..if you're gonna want ppl to give their livestock to you...give them an idea of your current setup so that ppl have the piece of mind that their livestock will be in proper care. Wish you the best in the hobby....hope i didn't offend you with the initial comment
  6. One caution when segregating the section for the chiller and skimmer. If your chiller is going to be pulling water from that comparment and releasing it in the return pump compartment it will potentially draw more water away from the sump section with the skimmer. I don't know if i'm describing this right but basically what i'm trying to say is that the flow rate in both the skimmer and the chiller compartments will be different and whichever area has the higher flowrate will turnover more water. That in essense would be reduce the efficiency of your skimmer seeing that it won't be processing all your tank water but less than half of the tank water than runs through the sump. Ideally you would want the skimmer to be at the first compartment at or after the point where water enters the sump to process all the nutrients. My two cents...
  7. Clowns are still available...anyone up for a trade...still looking for inverts...
  8. Eheim parts don't come cheap eh?....Petmart eh?....Know of any LFS in the east that sells it? Don't drive and don't know my way around either...haha Thanks for the quick response tho....
  9. I thought that they didn't sell the 1264 model anymore...someone told me it had problems overheating etc...but it's just hearsay so correct me if i'm wrong. Anyways....just a thought...seeing that the pump was too strong for you...would u be willing to trade with an Eheim 1262? Of course i'd be willing to top up a lil more for the unit just a thought...cheers...
  10. Hi all, Have been looking everywhere for this adapter but can't seem to find it. Refer to the picture below and you'll see that the Eheim 1262 comes with 2 hose adapters, one for the inlet and the other for the outlet and their sizes are 20mm and 12mm respectively. I'm looking for the outlet adapter that would fit a 16mm hose. Does anyone know where i can find it? Kinda need it urgently so's i can hook up the pump as my return. Anyone?....

  13. Thanks for all the comments, compliments and feedback.... Havent got around to posting much pictures of late as the DC is not with me...will try and get recent pictures soon... As an update, i just recently scaped the tank and transfered all existing livestock from the 2footer into the tank after around 4 weeks of cycling. All is doing well...tho I'm guilty of not taking water parameters...haven't got my new test kits (the last ones expired... ) Astrobol...i agree with you on that....but i believe that there are distinctly two camps with regards to these...some ppl prefer to rid the pest at the expense of the liverock while others prefer to maintain the bio diversity present in the rocks and live iwth the so called pest. Tho i've only maintained nano tanks...i've had no problems with pest crabs thus far so i decided to take the later route and not rinse the rock down... besides...it was too much trouble and i really didn't want to kill off the other beneficial bacteria, flora and fauna in the rocks.....and when u pay so much for rocks....i'd rather preserve it...else it'll be better to just get dead rock...for cheaper... Effiri...thanks for droppin by...more pics to come soon... cheers...
  14. Don't have any more links on me at the moment..used to keep shots of cool aquascaped tanks but it's all backed up on cd now....u should go around www.nano-reef.com ...i think the reason u can't see the link is cos u might need to be a member....just sign up and look around the members section...there's a buncha cool tanks there....
  15. How bout this reef scape.... ps. For more info, check out this link..tank dimensions are 4 x 1.5 x 1.5 http://www.nano-reef.com/forums/index.php?...658&hl=tigahboy
  16. Hey paul... Tank is lookin good....and glad to hear that all the piping problems have been solved....
  17. Thanks for the info bro but i guess it's my fault...i should have specified earlier that i was looking for more first hand experience as opposed to what the web site states....but really tho...thanks for your info and help on the matter.... Am still seriously considering the unit so i'll get back to you on it as soon as i make my decision... cheers,
  18. Still haven't got my hands on the DC.....will shoot for pictures tomorrow or the day after... Upz anyways....
  19. FYI...the wattage consumption of the pump is 100 watts.... Upz...
  20. Dude!....read my thread again buddy....i mentioned that i've already gone through the site but it doesn't provide much information on the real life usage and i was asking how did u use the unit in your tank....what's the kinda headloss i can expect from the unit, can it be connected to my return pipe etc...i don't need scientific numbers...but a lil bit of your time in addressing these questions seeing that this piece of equipment is unfamiliar to me...and i bet most in here.... besides...it's bound to help ur sale.....cheers....
