  1. Interested in: equipments: 2ft MH( 1 150w, 1 27w) PM sent.....
  2. Good to see we have no issues diabolus...and i see ur point about the higher evaporation rate....even without the MH, fans really get the evap rate up as well...i guess i never felt that as an issue once i set up my top up unit...... And malcom...no worries....one thing about forums is that one has to be pretty careful how one writes cos u never know how it can turn out at times...i guess it's always good to qualify urself.....i personally think that it can be a pain at times..lol but it's all good... Pics would be great....all the best in the new tank....
  3. Point taken diabolus....and for the record i'm not siding with Malcom per say....but just advocating the fact that the lighting is possible...true, i may have been too strong on my statement of accusing ya'll as being narrow minded and i apologize and take that back. as for him being cocky and arrogant...i do agree that i do sense that in his responses throughout this thread but to be fair don't u think that some of ur responses have been sarcastic as well.... If he chooses to be stubborn about the advices given, then so be it...it's unfortunately his decision but we as participants in this thread need not fuel the fire by throwing sarcastic comments back etc....and speaking of sounding cocky....i have to admit, i sense a bit of cockiness in ur last reply to me as well so how are you any better off than malcom?..... As far as comparisons with other countries...why can't we compare? we are talkin about light intensity at the end of the day...the only variable is how we deal with the heat issue and once that is out of the way.....aren't we still on the same grounds of arguement? True, in our tropical country, there isn't a need for a heater and chillers are commonly used....but evaporation is something that we all deal with as well....altho it's understandable that we would face a more rapid rate of evaporation being in our climate etc....so i still don't see your point in your statement about not being able to compare....
  4. oh and about the distance of the MH from the tank.....i see no real issue with that either as even at reduced intensity....the lighting from the MH would still be far greater than say a couple of T5 bulbs....and besides.....buying these lighting would easily allow for an upgrade in the future as opposed to having to buy a whole new set of lights when the upgrade bug hits...... cheers....
  5. For all the non believers....here's a guy with a 20 gallon tank and 400watts of MH sitting right on top of it..... http://www.lunchbucket.org/20H%20main%20page.htm I personally think that there's nothing wrong with Malcoms idea of using the 150w MH over his two feet tank. He has kept his temperature under control and sounds knowlegable enough to know when something is about to go wrong etc...u guys just can't be too narrow minded into thinking that T5s are the ultimate way around setting up a reef tank or nano reef tanks for the matter.... the beauty about reefing is that conventional rules doesn't always apply as given time and experience, these rules change...look at nano reefing for instance, a while back, ya'll used to think that it was not advisable for a new person to set up a tank any smaller than 3 feet saying that it's not easy and that bigger is better but i don't find that to be the case at all, i've maintained nano reefs from the start and haven't even ventured into larger tanks but to be honest, it wasn't that hard for me to set up my nano...some of the conventional rules didn't need to be applied to a nano as it normally would on ur regular tanks...for instance, i had my tank running for over a year without even a protein skimmer but it worked out fine. I apologize for babbling but my point is simply to not be so quick to rule out what may seem like unconventional methods or setting up and running a tank....as for the whole issue of too much light over a tank...check out nano-reef.com and you'll see a lot of setups with overkill lighting but they all seem to be doing fine...at the end of the day, there really isn't such a thing as too much lighting...but there is a problem with too little lighting and that seems to be more of an issue here in this forum at times..... Anyways....another apology if i've managed to step on toes or offended anyone....that's just my two cents....and to Malcom...good luck on ur setup...i was actually considering setting up the similar lighting setup but eventually decided against it simply cos i wasn't willing to hang the pendant on the ceiling and didn't wanna deal with too much heat and evap issues if i were to built it into a hood.....but also in saying that, i still believe it'll work out great for you....all the best....
  6. Hi there.... I'd like to find out what are you charging for the balast and the bulb too? If you could quote me the price of the 150w MH ballast and bulb +holder...it would be much appreciated..... thanks again.....
  7. As stated above....am looking for a 3 feet lighting setup, preferably a 1 MH and 2 FL combo etc....but i'm open.. anyone with any leads or looking to sell, feel free to respond or PM me... cheers....
  8. So is the 250w MH set still up for sale again?.....are you taking reservations still or is it now open for viewing..... Will be down in singapore next weekend....and am interested in the set.....let me know what's the deal....
  9. How old is the unit? Might be interested..... ps. got a picture by any chance? thanks
  10. Am interested.....where's the pick up point?
  11. Hey there 19percula, Just wonderin if i be second in line on the reservation for the PL lights in the event that Veeresh changes his mind? What colored bulbs are they anyways? blue and white?
  12. lol....that puts us in quite a predicament then eh? when exactly do u leave for overseas?....i was originally thinking of making my move down to singapore on the weekend of the 18th.....and the other issue is that the tank wouldn't be done cycling as i'd only be setting it up then.... well, like i said earlier....if anyone else is interested, then let em have it....otherwise, if there's any kind souls who'd be willing to put the shrimp up...lemme know i guess.... thanks for your time either way....
  13. Hi....am interested in ur pair of harlequins...am i to assume that they're a mated pair?.... only problem is that i don't get down to singapore till end of february...so i guess either if you're ok with keepin em till then or if no one gets em till then, i'll gladly take em off ur hands....if not no worries.... cheers....
  14. How much more for the surface skimmer attachment....and is the prism skimmer similar to the one in the picture below?... Lastly...what do you mean by 90% condition?
  15. does it come with the surface skimmer attachment? might be interested.....
  16. Got a picture of the metal halide set? I'm assuming it's 3 feet in length?....
  17. That is some excelent scaping there buddy but what u really need is a bigger picture cos it's difficult to see the details in your tank. any chance of posting larger images? other than that....keep up the good work and keep us posted on progress..... cheers...
  18. What kind of filtration are you using to keep up with the high bioload of the tank? U hardly have any bio filtration with the lack of LR and LS, what is stopping ur ammonia, nitrites and nitrates from going off the roof? Sorry...if i may sound rude saying this but i personally think that u are pushing it with this tank. A coral cat shark should be in a tank with a minimum of 6 feet in length to house it for life. Imagine someone stickin u in a say 8 x 8 feet room for life? Don't think u'd be too happy....same deal with puttin a 2 feet shark in a 3 feet tank. No doubt the shark is not full grown yet...but even so, the 3 feet length isn't going to be sufficient taking into account that part of the tank is already preoccupied by an eel and rocks etc...doesn't leave it much room to roam. And ur thinking of adding more eels?? just my personal opinion.........
  19. That tank is waaayyyyyy too small for 2 sharks.....
  20. I think you're forgetting one small point there nicholas. First off, not all fishes roam the entire seas.....and most only inhabit a small part of the ocean....staying within the confines of their habitat (ie. Go watch finding nemo again and realise that clown fishes will stay within the confines of their host anemone) while other fishes which are active swimmers tend to require more room to move. *Edit* which has already been mentioned by blacknails Now when you're starting a reeftank...the reason why ppl are particular about the size of tanks is simply to fulfull these requirements for the fish to be able to live to its ripe old age. Provided with the right enviroment, studies have shown that a percula clown fish could live in an aquarium for 30 years....and to the fish, i'll bet you my bottom dollar, he would be as happy as being in the ocean itself, if not better. Sure we can't simulate reality EXACTLY but we can be responsible enough to try our best to make it as similar as possible. The problem is this....the fish and coral trade is not going to diminish in the next couple of years....like it or not...ppl are going to try and make a quick buck by plucking corals and fishes out of their natural habitat to support a trade. But understanding this, it is OUR responsibility as reefkeepers to ensure that these animals get a proper home. That is why we have Forums like these so that ppl with less knowledge can come and learn and in the hopes of someday saving these fishes and corals from unecessary deaths in the hands of these less knowledgable people. Even in saying that, there have been efforts to curb reefs from being violated....in the US, there are a few companies which promote captive bred fishes and corals in a bid to stop ppl from harvesting from mother nature itself. They have spent millions in studying the appropriate conditions it would take to ensure that the fishes are breeding and the babies are healthy....only selling them when they are at an acceptable size.
  21. Judging from the way this "boy" responded to AT's reply and the rest of us....i honestly think he's not going to learn....I find it hard to believe that if the Founder of SGReef club can take the time to browse your post and give you advice, that you, Nicholas, can be so arrogant as to refute his words. Personally, i think we should leave this thread be and quit replies. There's no point in talking to the wall...sorry to say...whatever advice you can come up with, lil nicholas can have some time to come up with a rebuttal to it....so i really don't see a point. Almost every single person that has replied to his thread has given some form of advice to Nicholas but if you re read through the thread, you'll see that NOT ONCE has he accepted any form of criticism whatsoever...always trying to come up with justifications for his actions.....so you know what....let that be....whether he believes in Karma or not.....sooner or later in this lifetime or the next, his attitute WILL catch up with him...unfortunately, now won't be the time. This goes beyond reefkeeping but the lack of humility you have for a 14 year old is very disturbing....sure, confidence is good but taken to extremes isn't. But i won't border trying to give you advice on this as we all know there isn't a point to doing so....... I vote to end this thread right here and now...what's the point in replying to his post if he's not open to constructive feedback.
  22. now that i've re read my reply...yes it does sound pretty harsh... sorry...was a little heated when i was writing the reply.... but i do hope you would consider taking our advice tho Nicholas.....it's not too late to learn....
  23. It's not a matter of whether the fish dies from not eating or being bugged by your humbug or whatever. The fact of the matter is you're not being very responsible when it comes to stocking your tank....i've been keeping track of your threads and have you ANY idea how many fishes you have killed in the last 2 months?? And yet you still continue to buy fishes!! What you really should be doing is stop buying any more lifestock period!!! (Sorry if it came off as yelling...just trying to make a point) Take the time to observe how the other lifestock are doing and ensure that they are all doing well before you EVEN CONSIDER buying other fishes...and before doing that....find out more about that particular fishes care level before you buy it. That way you won't end up buying fishes that are definately going to die in your tank. The fact that you're buying all these fishes like the Cleaner Wrasse, Mandarins (3 of them??? ) and Tangs to put in your tank...please understand that as nice as these fishes may be....your tank CAN NOT support them....it takes a lot more to care for them than just to CHUCK them in your tank and hope that they eat...and then when they die you blame it on the fact that they don't eat....even consider the fact that the reason some of them are not eating is coz they're stressed...and the reason for the stress probably from the amount of other livestock in your tank... I'm not saying that that's the reason why the fishes are dying...there could be numerous reasons but the fact remains that you need to stop stocking! Yet again...i can be faulted for not being tackful with my writing and may be coming off a little harsh but after reading your post for the past month or so.....it is really disturbing....in fact very disturbing to see what you've been doing with your tank and with this whole hobby.....if i'm not mistaken...you've already killed about 10 or more fishes in the last 2 months and you still continue to stock your tank with insane amounts of fishes, telling everyone that your tank is doing fine with the high amount of livestock...... if not for the MORALE of actually killing living beings....have some courtesy to save your dad's pocket. If i'm not mistaken, this site was started up to promote responsible reefkeeping and to ensure that ppl can learn from the mistakes of others and also to conserve the marine habitat as it is probably being dangerously close to extinction...we start marine tanks to preserve a part of nature in our own homes and also learn to appreciate LIFE in the sea..... I really shouldn't be getting so upset over what you're doing with your tank if i were to go with the mentality that it's your life and your money and you can do whatever you want with it.....but it's difficult to stand by and watch you kill all these beautiful fishes and add to their rate of extinction...... think carefully before you have the urge to go out again and buy more fishes......for the love of god...and fishes....resist the urge and learn more first.....
  24. Did i expect it to die?....quite honestly...yes i thought it would yet i stand corrected .....but by all means do let us know how it's doing...pictures would be great. Oh and funny that from the time you posted on your last thread where you had 11 fishes.....you have now gone ahead and added 4 more fishes to your system..and one of it is a powder blue tang. And you're telling ppl here that you are trying to get the fishes out?.....hmmm.... the thing is, even on this new thread you've started....ppl are telling you that your tank is overstocked....and ppl were saying the same thing in your last thread as well (and that was only with 11 fishes)....and yet you continued to add fishes to your system....
  25. In the most polite manner possible...might i ask what happened to your anemone?
