  1. More pics! Here's a shot of the old scape before the new
  2. Does anyone know which other LFS are selling yellow tangs? And does Ah Beng still have any left? Also, if someone could pm the price would be great
  3. ANyone spotted any s/m sized yellow tangs anywhere else other than coral farm...really lookin to get them
  4. Unless u have a huge tank...and i mean a real big one, with a lot of sand surface for it to glide on...less rocks more sandbed is best....you should stay away from keeping rays and sharks. Most of these fishes should also be kept in a species specific tank and not with other aggresive fishes. Don't get me wrong....this is not an attempt to flame you or anything....try and read up more on this and you'll understand where i'm coming from. Check out these links for more info on these beautiful creatures http://www.wetwebmedia.com/rays.htm http://www.wetwebmedia.com/batoiddisfaqs.htm http://www.wetwebmedia.com/batoidcompfaqs.htm Here's just a few for your ref....hope it helps...
  5. Mind PMing me the location where you bought it too? cheers
  6. Pin action is related to ball revolutions, speed and angle of entry to the pocket. Personally i think hooking has far more advantages than spinners. With the way balls are built these days, it's easier to increase overall revs on the ball and depending on how it's drilled, can give good angles of entry as well. But i guess at the end of the day, technology can only serve to assist in ones game....but can't make u a champ so it still boils down to the basics. Discipline and consistency...just keep practicing and like one of the previous reefers said, get good at your spares, and when u feel you've conquered that, more on to the strikes. But spares at this stage in your development would be the most important thing. When u've mastered that and hit the big leagues, then u start worrying about ball revs, pin actions....cos then u'd wanna focus on stringing those strikes together. All the best... ps. And sorry to hear that you're leaving sgreef. Haven't been following but wondering what was the reason that drove the decision? Anyways...all the best....
  7. Sounds like a good idea and opportunity to take out the dusty old ball in the storeroom. I'd be interested in a bowling tourney!.... btw, like what the rest have said, speed isn't everything. What u really want is pin action and with the new balls these days, that can be achieved with the right fitting and drilling. Only downfall is that u'd probably have to invest in better equipment. Spinners and Hookers have a completely different type of play anyways, so check with the pro shop dude and he'll be the best person to advice you if ur planning on getting a new ball. But if you just wanna increase your speed for the extra punch, raising your swing would be better than increasing your speed during your release/follow through. And as stated before, your timing would need to be altered too...generally, you'd enther need to shorten your steps or push off a lil earlier before the first step (or second, depending on whether u take a 4 or 5 step approach) Also, what angle are you hitting the pocket at? is it straight on or from an angle? that'll make a big difference to your pin action as well... my 2.5 cents.....good luck with it!
  8. I think u meant mm and not cm..... How're u coping with nutrient exports with the prizm skimmer? Clean Setup!
  9. Thanks alvin...yeah....the tank is still someways away from being complete...in the meantime...i'll just sit back and watch it evolve.... ps. Thinkin of a possible rescape....main reason is to catch this pesky teddy bear crab in the tank....and secondly to improve the overall flow in the tank. We'll see if i get around to it eventually....
  10. Actually, it's the goniopora that's completely taken over the canyon....the wife really wanted that specimen and didn't know where else to put it so decided to put it in the valley/canyon....still has a cool effect when the clowns are swimming in it and all....
  11. Finally got the new camera...but still learning how to take decent shots of the tank. Here's a full tank shot as of 1 week ago. Will have to clean the glass and take clearer shots in the future but here's how the tank looks as of end of 2005
  12. 1.5 inches doesn't sound very big But are they true or false percula...and a picture might help ur sale along... cheers
  13. U might wanna look at the prizm skimmers. But more importantly, what do you intend to keep in this tank? If it's gonna be mainly softies, some LPS and fishes, then u can realistically do without a skimmer..but on one big condition....u limit your fish load to only 2-3 small fishes (don't even think about putting tangs in that tank). Your tank volume would come up to about 11-12 gallons and at that tank volume and size, u can only afford to keep that 2-3 small fishes for two main reasons, firstly the bioload, secondly will be the issue of space and territory for the fishes. Personally, if i were you, I'd go with a pair of clowns (false or true..ur choice) and maybe a small goby if you want variety....and that's it....I'd do without the skimmer and do a 10-15% water change weekly. At that tank volume, 10% only amounts to 1 gallon of water. Doing the water change will be pretty easy. Again, as a disclaimer, i'm not against skimmers and definately see their benefits in a reef tank but I always advocate the fact that this hobby doesn't need to be an expensive one....especially when u venture into the nano territory. I've started tanks with less than 200 bucks and maintained it fine.....(before the upgrade bug hit me ) and find that around here, ppl tend to get a lil caught up in the "high tech" wizardry of things and forget that the core success in this hobby is more husbandry and research as opposed to solid equipment....but no doubt...if u lack the latter, the equipment will save ur butt many a times.... It's good to see that ur reading up as much as you can on this....keep it up...perhaps this site might help u more in your nano venture www.nano-reef.com U should be able to find some useful information there..... cheers
  14. Yes...20 watts are just normal flourescent bulbs...u definately want to upgrade the lighting. Check out the pasar malam or our sponsor threads for deals on T5-HO lighting....HO basically stands for High Output which puts out more wattage of light than regular T5 bulbs. As for the anemone...good to hear that ur feeding them...keep it up till u get better lighting...in fact keep the feeding up even after u upgrade your lighting...till they are healthier. cheers and happy reefing
  15. I don't think that the temperature is necessarily a big factor in this case. 28 degree celcius is actually bearable for most corals but i think the bigger issue here is your knowledge of reefing. And forgive me if this post may offend you (that is not my intention i assure you) but from the looks of it, u need to do a lot more reading up on the livestock you keep or intend to keep. And also on the necessary setup equipment required in maintaining a healthy reef. I for one am not an advocate of expensive equipment but there are some things that are just necessary for you to maintain a reef tank. First off, what lightings are you using for the tank? I can't tell but am willing to bet that they're just normal flourescent tubes. If so, then they're definately not sufficient for the tank...let alone for anemones. FYI, most of your so called corals are in actual fact anemones and they are not corals but animals, which explains why they move so much....also mainly cos they are probably not getting enough light (read up on why light is so necessary for corals and anemones...) So first things first, upgrade your lights if you want to keep ur tank inhabitants alive...especially the anemones. As for the upgrade, there isn't a necessary need to go for Metal halides (MH) as the tank is pretty shallow...i'm guessing 1.5 feet. If that's the case, a good set of T5 tubes will do just fine, 2 first and preferably 4 if you can afford it. (Look around the Pasar Malam as there are a few reefers selling em second hand) Secondly, check your parameters with test kits. Most ppl here would highly suggest a good proteim skimmer but i am of the belief that if you keep close watch of your parameters, livestock and do your regular maintenance, you can do without one for your tank size. But also in saying that, a good protein skimmer will save you a whole lotta headache and unnecessary stress. Thirdly, go do more reading on the current livestock that you have...and to try and save your anemones, try and feed them small chunks of market prawns to try and strengthen them up a lil. They aren't doing too well in your current tank conditions. Lastly, don't be discouraged by any possible negative comments that you may receive through the forum threads etc....with the bad also comes the good and there are many reefers here who are more than willing to lend a helping hand so ask questions and learn as you go along. I hope you don't take this response the wrong way and hopefully you've learn something that can help you improve the state or ur current tank. cheers...
  16. Not to be on anybodys side or anything but don't ya'll think that ur all being a lil childish about this whole matter? I mean i hear time and time again about being adults about stuff like this but almost every single comment on this thread has been uncalled for (take note of the word 'almost')....regardless of what was wronged in the past. Ya'll are just taking pot shots for the sake of it and it's getting to be really pathetic. Take a good look at all ya'lls responses and tell me that my conclusions are unfounded.... So either grow up or shut up!... ps. Sorry for being so harsh but all this crap in Sgreef needs to stop, and when i say crap, it's not just this incident, there have been many other cases of ppl being put off by responses on their threads that leaves a bitter taste in their mouth and some of em are new members as well...what is up with everyone these days just looking to cause conflict everywhere? There's already enough conflict that we each have to deal with in your daily lives...there isn't a need to take it to the boards as well... ....and we call ourselves a peaceful and helpful reefing community?
  17. That's the main problem here my friend....ur right, u do have a point about sticking to a proper format etc when conducting a sale...but people will always have the right to choose. If they choose not to do it, then it's more their loss than it would be the buyers loss...or urs for the matter.... Besides, why should it tick you off at all? It's not your thread...it's not your sale...it's not even your intention to buy it...there really isn't a need to be rude. And by sounding the way you did, you're only asking for a confrontation....it would almost appear as if you were looking for one. As right as you may be....there has to be some level of tact when dealing with issues...especially electronically when words are so easily misread. At the end of the day....limsteel does have a point....it would be up to the mods to decide if this thread is unfit to be kept "alive"...if you have suggestions on how to improve it..i'm sure they're more than happy to listen but taking the course of action you chose to take doesn't help anyone...it offends ppl and it causing conflict where conflict is unnecessary. So bottom line....chill a lil will ya....and try and practice a lil tact at times.... No hard feelings buddy...
  18. Not entirely true....most times, the sally lightfoot will not be able to harm a fish as it'll be too slow for most fishes...unless the fish is ill to begin with. Haven't had much problems with them thus far.... I haven't faced much luck with turbo snails on longer hair algae...and when they get too big...can be a lil clumsy....perhaps a combination of both might work for you....either way..good luck with it...
  19. If it's algae issues u have....u might wanna consider a sally lightfoot.
  20. Well...still haven't gotten around to getting new pictures But took a video of the tank with my treo 650 recently so thought i'd post that up for now. It was taken approximately a week ago, after the purchase of my 3 lil yellow tangs.. Here's the link using Rapidshare....unfortunately, i don't know of any other way to attach this file and Rapidshare will only keep the link active for a certain period of time so if anyone's got a better solution...i'm open to it... http://rapidshare.de/files/8751475/Video_120105_001.3gp.html Oh and the file can be viewed through quicktime guess this will have to tie ya'll over for the meantime....
  21. The rational behind the non air tight skimmers is that the skimate produced in the collection cup of the skimmer is liquid, while the neck of the skimmer is mainly foam. When the skimate reaches the point where it overflows into the neck of the skimmer, it will merely fall back into the body of the skimmer...and i believe when this happens, it reduces the height of the foam on the neck and possibly reduces skimming capabilities to a certain degree. With skimate not being allowed to effectively flow up the neck of the skimmer, it reduces skimming and doesnt pose any danger for the skimmer to overflow. Please don't take my words for gold....this intepretation is based on something i've read earlier as well as some common logic. Hope that helps you out some.... cheers.
