(L&S) Bamboo shark's CRAZE named project "Nitro"
southpaw23 replied to Lester's topic in FOWLR (Fish-only with Live-rock)
6 footers should be about ideal for the shark if there's sufficient room to move and not overcrowded with rockwork. Good move Paul.... -

I believe the intent of this thread is in finding out HOW we can measure the three skimmers. There is no right and wrong, what i believe the intent of the thread starter is to find out 1. If we can establish a common measurement, 2. If we can actually find a realistic testing ground etc..... So to me...the discussion is still valid...we're just coming up with ideas....the number crunching will help substantiate future findings...

Thinking of selling off my tank...

I'm afraid divinesloth was clearer in his post than in ur last post But i believe responsibility lies in all of us, not just as a buyers or sellers. If i see someone getting stiffed out of a purchase (and i am by no means refering to this sale thread), i believe it's our responsibility as reefers in this community to speak up... buying and selling aside, responsible reefkeeing shld be the overarching belief we all should subscribe too. 'nuff said.... Lets no retract from this sale thread, i believe Alan has made a great effort in clearly specifying his terms of sale. This discussion can then be taken offline. Apologies again Alan, i believe i may have unnecessarily started this debate. Can we all just play our parts and let the sale thread proceed?.... -

You're right...the sand bed is one of the biggest issues...for some reason, i can't see the picture so was unaware that his tank was barebottom.... -

You're right....it's not your obligation nor responsibility...but if you are asking for 15 grand from someone...common courtesy would dictate that you assist the fella in some of these task seeing that there will be significant disruptions in your household anyways...and by the way, you're not an LFS so it's not relevant. I would've expected more responsibility from reefers...not from LFS owners as they are after all in the business of making money... As to the purpose of my posting...i apologize if it appears as if it is disrupting your thread but this forum is still about educating ppl. And from the look of it these days...there's a lot of less informed individuals in this hobby. I was merely pointing out certain points for consideration. 15 grand is a lot of money...if someone were to consider buying, they should be entitled to all the information that's available. At the end of the day...i will apologize again if i have disrupted your thread and should the mods feel that i have done so, please feel free to remove my postings and i will refrain from posting any further comments. cheers. -
Perhaps to help facilitate this along better....why don't we do a comparison of skimmers within the same skimming capacity range? Say for instances 1000 litres? Take the models from each of the brands and lets have input and a comparison on it's performance.... No point talkin about ridiculously priced, high powered skimmers that 99% of us are probably NEVER going to see or use in our lifetime. Lets be a little more practical in this discussion and compare models which ppl are currently already using.... To start off, how bout a comparison between the Deltec 851, ATI Bubble Master and maybe the BK-250 ? (I'm not quite familiar with their models, would this model be comparable?) Lets the games begin!

That's not the same...if you're changing tanks...you can plan to have the existing tank running and cycle the new tank before transfering existing livestock. In non-sps cases, ppl can also setup tubs to contain livestock, with skimmers and lights while waiting for the new tank to be setup. It is completely a different ball game when selling an entire setup. There is a lot the potential buyer would have to do before he can buy your setup if he intends to keep all ur sps and livestock alive for the transition. Setting up temporary holding areas in his house, a lighting and skimmer setup etc. If he doesn't own one right now, then he will have to decom your tank and quickly setup the temp holding area and move the livestock before moving the tank etc....the list goes on..... Bottom line...it's a logistical nightmare and franky near impossible task. That's why it is generally not feasible for ppl to buy over an entire setup with livestock and corals. It's not like ur tank can magically teleport from your house to the new owners house...even if you do get it done in half a day, you're bound to lose some sps in the process. Plus the tank will go through another mini cycle from the die off from the liverock etc...and potential cause more deaths in the coming days/weeks. Frankly, i'd rethink your strategy...either keep the entire setup or break up the sale and get rid of livestock first...with corals to go first, then fishes, liverock etc..... But hey....it's a free world and ur free to do what you please....that's my two cents... Upz for ya! -
So far i've only seen one private home owner that has a tank suitable for sharks...and it was posted in RC sometime back....i believe it was a 20x7x4 tank that was specifically designed to house them. wish i could dig up that picture....if i can...will post it up. But bottom line....no dough?....no go man!
-
Actually the pic you posted is a 15 ft tank. He was on reefcentral for a while and there was a lot of controversy on his tank simply because it was not a suitable tank for black tips. Too many high rockwork structures and corals and not enough swimming space for the shark. There's a famous book written about the care of sharks...tho i can't recall the title, it has specific information on minimum sized tanks and how the scapes should be to avoid injury to the sharks etc...and the first thing on it was on low and scarce rock work and enough swimming space for the shark, which is clearly not present in the guys tank. Don't get me wrong...it's a magnificent tank with corals, many tangs, other fishes plus the shark and the look is amazing but just cos something looks great doesn't make it right. Of course he feels otherwise but if one truly cared about the well being of the shark, it should be out of that tank.

Sad to say...they're probably dead...why? cos the ppl that took them from you probably didn't know much about raising them...and i can pretty much bet....didn't have a big enough tank to house them in. No offense...but i personally think that as good a job you did at documenting and raising them from the egg...you shouldn't have started at all if you didn't have a backup plan of passing em to someone who can properly raise them. -

6000 gallon shark tank?? wow!....i gotta go check that out...haven't been on there in a while....must go see later tonight thanks for the heads up
-
Thats more cos you didn't have enough tank space for the stingray. Please understand that these specimens are NOT SUITABLE for home aquariums and are much more complex creatures than ur regular fishes. As a rule of thumb, if you don't have enough experience, nor have enough dough to buy a REALLY large tank.....please save these fishes from premature deaths and leave them in the oceans where they belong.......

Don't forget that the lifespan for the LEDs are 50,000 hours, if left on at 24 hours a day, that's almost 6 years before replacements are required. But note that not all bulbs will be fired for the whole 24 hour period which effectively makes the lifespan of these units close to 10 years possibly. Other advancement like the simulation of various color temps from 5k to 22k plus lunar phases makes these lighting set unlike the rest. It really can't be compared to MH with all these other add ons.... As for the price, like any introductory technology, it's understandable that it'll be high...just have to give it sometime. Look at plasma TVs...i remember seeing themg going for 40k way back during it's introduction....look how much cheaper they are now. End of the day, it looks like exciting times ahead of us with the advent of this new technology...and likely more to come. As for pooling of our resources together like Jacobus mentioned....unfortunately its not that simple. These products undergo years of research and testing, even if we had the capabilities within, how many of us would want to dedicated our time out of work to work on all these activities? It's like a job in it's own...and at the end of the day and spending all that time on it....when u can finally come up with a model ur happy with at an affordable price, ask yourself, after all that work, are you really willing to sell it off at cost price or slightly above cost price? Would you not expect compensation for the two years worth of time dedicated into research and testing etc? Tho i can't justify on their part why the price tag is such, understanding the nature of businesses, there's probably a reason why it's priced that high. It's also called first movers advantage...at the end, if it's really true that they're overpricing, it's only a matter of time before someone comes up with a better cheaper model... So let's wait and see....

Actually it was a 15 ft tank....but huge nonetheless....

How big is your tank?...and does ur stingray have blue spots on it?

Lets see the pics man!
