OMG! Look at these hybrids and rare fishes!

My tank is small, 2.5ft. The "tapeinosoma" dottyback is shy on the first two days, after tat it is no where near shy! But neither is it overly aggressive. I would say semi-aggressive as at times i saw it chasing my other dottybacks in the tank but it's jux playful chasing and stop v fast. So overall a v nice and small dottyback to keep.

Using a 1/8hp for a 5-footer does not cause the chiller to kick in every 5 mins! I once use a 1/10 hp for a 5-footer and contrary to wat most pple thinks, it is actually quite electricity saving. The chiller runs very long for 2 hours to reduce the temp by 1 degree, den it rests for about 2 hours before it kicks in again. So for the whole day it only kicks in 6 times and runs for 10 to 12 hours. So the power consumption is the same in the end and the less frequent kicks in also help to reduce electricity loss. However my experience is only accurate if u are keeping a FOWLR (dim lightings) and have low powered equipments (smaller turnover rate) so that the heat introduction is low. So for a normal reef tank with heavy lightings, high return, powerful skimmer etc, u should strive for overpowered chiller if u can afford it so that the chiller does not kick in too frequently.

The main objective of regular water change is to reduce nitrate and phosphate. Skimmer, UV do not remove nitrate. Canister filter depends on what media u use, if not it is also useless in removing nitrate. Algae scrubber is effective in removing nitrate and phosphate but may not be fast enough for bigger tanks. However with a powerful skimmer and a algae scrubber in place, it reduces the need of water change but does not eliminate it totally. Water change once in a while is beneficial as it replaces trace elements, reduce toxins (like heavy metals) accumulated and also helps to reduce nutrients level.

If u like look out for east african shipment. They are rare but has appeared before. The last one tat came in was from CF east african shipment. That same shipment u and Jon bought the flameback angels. It was stuck at the corner of the back tanks, nobody buy becos it was injured and was breaking down and it died shortly after. Before tat i believe LCK brought in before also. It is not an expensive fish. -
Dun forget the curious wormfish at CF! Although the fish looks like it may hide for eternity. Yes, so many unknown species can appear in Bali and philippines shipments! And best is the supplier dunno also and tat's why things are cheap! Other shipments also carries interesting stuff. West Africa shipment i can still find interesting stuff on my 2nd visit after many days. First visit blinded by all the bright blue africanus tat i missed out a rare little pufferfish. If i spotted it earlier on day 1 shipment, i would hav saved it from whitespots. US shipment is another big surprise. Anything can appear tat. I love to go for shipments and look out for things that pple dunno and will miss out.

A gorgeous hybrid, semi x takeuchii Some older pics have been posted before, but not as beautiful as the one above. -
There are always surprises in places like CF, Ah Beng, Irene etc. Cheap and good surprises.

The price did not drop!! Auntie know it's a special fish so she sold me at 20, higher than the usual dutoiti dottyback price. But when u bought the fish, auntie is not around, so the workers tot it's jux a normal dutoiti and sold to u at a dutoiti price. CF price can be variable when it comes to unlisted(not in the invoice) fish. Common fishes found in the invoice yes the price WILL NOT fluctuate much. For example the price of yellow tangs in CF has not changed for 10 years already. However other fishes like leucokranos clown, thiellei clowns, "tapeinosoma", aberrant diadema dottyback, auntie's "pig" fish, all these are not in the invoice or are freak appearance, so the price is decided by Jon and if he's not around, decided by auntie. And if both are not around and the workers know the fish is special, they will not sell to u and ask u to wait till Jon/auntie is back.

This is the closest pic i've found on the net of our "tapeinosoma": Many specimens have been collected, the link is here My fish also has the speckles like tat of the pic shown above. The only problem is our "tapeinosoma" is blue margin and not black margin as the common name of tapeinosoma suggested. So it may be a colour variant of tapeinosoma and not a whole new species. Jux like flame angel in hawaii is red whereas in philippines more yellow.

Apogon Parvulus and Sun Coral for sale
Digiman replied to Digiman's topic in Sell off/Pasar Malam Shop
Ok. I hope u can collect asap either tmr or sunday. Cos the hogfish in my tank is a trouble. -
From the pic i cant see that it is deep. It is jux widespread but there is no redness or sores. It is jux spreading and slowly eating into the flesh. So if u catch out still got cure. If there is redness (infection), it would hav killed the fish when the patch is half the size now. So if it's so big patch and still not killing the fish tat means it is not overly serious, so still got hope to cure. But dun expect the wound to heal perfectly, it'll leave a scar.

Pls do not dose melafix into the main tank unless necessary. Esp if u hav SPS. Melafix will cause skimmer to go haywire and will need to be shut or turn down for at least a week. Best is u can catch out the fish and dose in a separate QT. The injury of your angel is superficial and can be treated effectively w melafix. My angel also kena this before and i healed it almost completely w melafix in a month.

Ok now with a better pic i can go and search wat it is. The body shape and tail is v different from wassi and elongatus. Was the body this red before it died? Cos u told me it's bluish grey but from the pic of the dead fish it looks reddish grey. -

Octozin - Cure for white spots
Digiman replied to hfabs's topic in Disease treatment/parasite/pest control
Whitespots disappear on the next day so fast? Be careful cos the whitespots may come back again. Becos the whitespots may hav detached themselves from the body as tomites and multiply to re-attach to the fish body. I've used Octozin before and it wont say it is v effective if the whitespots is at a v serious stage already. Octozin does not cause excessive evaporation. It may jux be coincidence. -

How nostalgic! Both were in my tanks for a period of time and i remember they were so cute and red under my dim lighting. Now it has grown big and fat and scary!

Holacanthus africanus SPS safe. LPS and softies depends. Generally not safe with meaty LPS like prata and open brains. Softies may be not safe with zoas. Otherwise quite safe. -
Oh i think u mean more oddities rather than exotics. Like frogfish, pipefish, batfish, flying gurnard, trumpet fish, scorpion fish, etc. Then u can either visit Ah Beng or CF. Ah Beng in the east frequently has oddities above. CF now has octopus, frogfish, lionfish, etc. But CF can only take cab in, no public transport.
