Bad? No. Sometimes in this hobby the passion and the love for some fishes can be so great that we cannot stop or control ourselves. But ventralis i really have to give up. Too much pain and sadness watching them get skinnier and die. Dun ever want to go through that again. By the way do u find Flavoguttatus anthias easier or they are equally as difficult? Many has came to Singapore but i seldom heard of anyone keeping them alive so it'll be great if u can share yuour experience or success with us. P.S. I'm waiting for the exciting updates of Dejongi! -

I've tried ventralis three times and they eat well, but jux get skinnier and waste away within a month. Hawaiiensis ventralis are even worse, harder to maintain and poor shippers. Those that have appeared here all did not survive during holding at the LFS. I hope u'll continue to enjoy success with the ventralis becos they are not rare, but able to keep them healthy is v rare and something v hard to achieve, especially for the hawaiiensis ventralis! Also congrats on your new gramma dejongi! Beautiful fish but too rich for my blood! -

Exactly. There's another v deepwater anthias down there in hawaii that if available will make H.fuscipinnis look cheap and common! odontanthias elizabethae After Roa Excelsa, the only possibly new and rare ones from hawaii will be anthias like these from the deep dark bottom! Dun understand why they hav to be so beautiful when it is total darkness down there. Email M3Seekers, so they will time to start sourcing and by the time u return they would hav found one. -

No they are not considered reef-safe, but they are not too destructive either. Kept them well fed and they should be fine in a reef tank. All three are from africa, in order of the pics, leucopleura (came in from Iwarna twice), blackburni (M3 has some to offer now if anyone is interested), dolosus (saw at CF once thru east africa shipment and i believe LCK can bring in too). All three are obtainable and not expensive. -
They will do fine together. It does not matter which one go in first. But if u hav to choose, i would say chromis go in first, den bartletts.

With so many deepwater hawaii fishes collected recently, is there anything else down there that is still worth catching for the trade? Yes! There is a v beautiful and v deep water fish in hawaii (see video link below). The Grammatonotus macrophthalmus. It can be found in Japan water also. This fish is v deep much more than prognathode basabei depth! It is found 300m to 500m, that is >1000 feet! It will never survive being pulled out from such great depth, so likely never to appear in this hobby. Video: http://www.hawaiianatolls.org/video/HURL/HURL_GramFish.mov -
I'm not v sure if the other two are also the same as the one i got. Come to think of it they look more Scleronephthya sp but it's purple!
-
It's reacting v well to lights. So i guess if it's not the big branching litophyton it should survive. My old lemon tree doing well until now so if this is lemon tree i'm not too worried.
-
I dun remember. But never mind whether lemon tree or litophyton i like tat coral. It caught my eye at CF and i knew i mux hav it!
-
Anyway do u feel the coral above is a litophyton or another lemon tree?
-
I'm not intending to put in any big showpiece, if not i would hav gotten a clarion or bandit and put it in already. Gem tang will grow big v v fast also, so i'm a bit reluctant to get another one. Super rare centropyge damn hard to get la, i want but v v hard to get. Butterfly is temporary not an idea i hav for my tank.
-
CF tricolor tang has became so ugly! No la i dun wan zebrasoma tricolor tang, it will come big and i rather get a small gem tang. I'll think about it.
-
-
No, nothing in mind. Becos the tank is small, so i din hav any thoughts of keeping big fishes in there.
-
And the linki again! Still shy but starts eating mysis already. This weekend i hope to update another rare basslet i'm getting from M3. Should i get a gem tang again?
-
Terry i took a photo of the litophyton. It's pinkish purple, u can compare to the colour of the lemon tree coral beside it. Actually it does not look like the common litophyton.
-
Wa tat's a lot of fishes for a 4ft tank. But your tank is well scaped with ample swimming space plus some of the fishes are small, so the tank does not look overly crowded.

Anthias are difficult. Go for the easier ones like bartletts, dispars, lyretails, carberryi etc. If u keeping bartletts dun keep more than three as they tend to fight among each other after a while. Resplendent anthias are a good choice too, but u need to get healthy ones as most of them dun take shiping well and arrive v stressed and unhealthy. Chromis u can consider retrofasciata, nigrura, or the common viridis. Chromis are more sensitive fishes so u need to buy a few more for casualties. For example if u want to keep three, then buy five becos usually two or three will die. Ugly scaping. I dislike this kind of v cramp and all-stack-up kind of scaping.

Adding more caves will allow more resting and hiding places for your fishes. But while u add more caves, try not to lose the open concept of your tank.
