High protein foodsource!! No problem with bacteria if they are fresh and perhaps washed in saltwater and stored in the chiller.

Turning white is a sign of stress... bleaching.... you didn't describe your lighting system and no, of hours you leave it on. Sometimes it could be you picked a sick coral.

Different salinity at different locations
Achilles Tang replied to wood_stock's topic in New to the Marine Aquaria Hobby
The simple explanation could be that collecting water at the sump inlet and outlets will lead to a lot of microbubbles that cling on and affect the buoyancy of the floating needle. Try tapping hard a few times to knock off any bubbles before taking a reading. -

Scientists since Darwin have known that whales are mammals whose ancestors walked on land. But one critical step was missing: The identity of the land ancestors of whales. Researchers have now discovered the skeleton of a 48-million-year-old mammal called an Indohyus. It is a fox-sized mammal that looked something like a miniature deer and is the closest known fossil relative of whales. Because Indohyus itself is not a whale, but a close cousin, the discovery suggests that the first whales were themselves aquatic, rather than evolving aquatic habits after they took to the water. Looks like a turbinara, commonly called a cup coral. Unfortunately, yours look like its been artificially coloured to make it more saleable because it must have been badly bleached. The colour will have fade off in a couple of weeks but hopefully your coral has grown enough zooxanthellae to sustain its energy needs to survive.

Rising carbon emissions might kill off the ocean's coral reefs by 2050, scientists warn in today's edition of the journal Science. The review article, co-authored by 17 marine scientists in seven countries, including the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), is the most comprehensive review so far of the catastrophic threat global warming poses to coral, and by extension many ocean species. Burning coal, oil and gas adds carbon dioxide to the atmosphere, the same gas used to give soft drinks fizz. Just as carbon dioxide is absorbed into the drink, ocean water absorbs it from the air. When the carbon dioxide enters the ocean, it makes the water more acidic. That interferes with the ability of coral to calcify their skeletons: They can no longer grow and they begin to die. Scientists and educators from NOAA's National Marine Sanctuary Program embarked on a nine-day mission to the world's only undersea scientific facility on Sept. 17. While living underwater in the Aquarius ocean laboratory, scientists will investigate changes to corals and marine life in Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary and broadcast their activities in real time to students and general ...
