If I were you... I'll just pick Aquarium Corals : Selection, Husbandry, and Natural History" by Eric Borneman! If you are into phytoplankton culture... "Clownfishes" by Joyce Wilkerson makes an interesting read... well comparatively to the Plankton Culture Manual by Frank H Hoff & Terry W Snell. If you are a picture dude and love to ID everything... you can get the Indo-Pacific Coral Reef Field Guide... tons of photos of almost every inhabitant in a reef habitat! That's the only travel-friendly book... it's hand-sized!

Ahhh.. they mystery of the disappearing fishes..... My dear watson, there are 4 probable causes: 1. They jumped out 2. They were eaten 3. They are hiding somewhere and you can't find them. 4. They were abducted by aliens. Eliminate every possible scenario until you get to the answer. Good luck! j/k... hope you'll find them soon!

Hah Tanzy.... knew that was coming from you! My cycle was very very short. One week after the liverock went in.... I tried my best to induce ammonia levels... used a dead stinky sotong (whew!), threw in my hermits, put in natural ammonia (go figure).... had a small spike, followed by no2, no3.... and then nothing... all in a week! Must be the fact that I used almost all my old tank water, plus NSW almost 300G worth..... and all my existing LR and some livesand. The sandbed won't be mature yet in the short term... so my filtration is dependent on my LR and skimmer/ozonizer combi. Oh... and my half-done refugium too.... still needs lots of macroalgae. The first livestock in was my shrimps.... canary in the mines so to speak.... once they survived and even spawned fry (last weekend!!!!).... its all clear!!!! Like my anthias? They are feeding well on mysis and live BS. -

Here's the sump tank where my Aqua Medic Oceanrunner 6000 runs 6500 litres per hour through to my main tank via two pvc pipes with check valves to prevent backflow. My H&S Euroreef sits in the sump. Those black suckers are holding airline tubes actually dripping the effluent from my Calcium reactor. Here's where the water overflows from my refugium back into my sump before the main pump sends it back to the main tank. -

A view of my overflow box with my DIY filter tray to place filter wool for mechanical filtration. Here's when I will have to remove the standpipes for maximum mechanical trappig with filter wool. The overflow box has two Durso standpipes leading to the sump. Here's the way the standpipes lead out to... to a true union ball valve for easy removal and flow control.... and into the sump tank. -

But before I do that... It's time to show my liverock arrangements first! Arranging my liverocks took 2 days... this is the start where I put it all on the sandbed first. Nearly completed... nah... it's gonna be a work in progress for some time! -

How many fish for 55gal
Achilles Tang replied to albinooscar's topic in New to the Marine Aquaria Hobby
Small fishes - clowns, damsels, firefishes, gobies would be fine. Fishes which grow big fast and requires room... like tangs and angels, are bad choices. AT -
About 3" and 4"....

I'll be happy to relieve you of your meter! Check your PM! -
Hi guys... I moved my chiller across the room so that the hot air exhaust vent from my Teco RA680 chiller is facing a window. Doing this helps to dissipate the heat. Before this, the chiller was in my room and boy, was it warm in there! For maximum efficiency... I intend to fix a ventilation duct to the chiller vent that will go out the window where the wind will further dissipate the hot air. Problem is ... I don't know where to find a flexible duct hose with a diameter that will fit the 20cm x 19cm square vent opening. It should be heat-insulated to contain heat well inside the duct hose... any lobangs?

No need to computer draw then... just fax it to me loh.... Can?

Its hard to visualize without a drawing... can you post it up? Or email me at achilles_tang@yahoo.com

Funny... but your 'refugium' isn't a refugium by real definition! It's a coral tank! A refugium would be macroalgae dominated, allowing pods and worms to grow without fear of predation by any livestock in the tank. It's a place of 'refuge' for them so to speak! And a refugium is commonly used for natural filtration by all the algae.... I see no such function in your 'refugium', Phang... heh! Hey Phang... if you are really lost about your main tank maker... why not use mine? He did a good job on mine!

Phang created an ozone thread here There's some info there that might interest those wanting to know more about ozone.
