  1. Interesting read. Really adds meaning to the saying: "The more I know, the less I understand"!
  2. Yeah agreed but you have to emphasize its only on a watt for watt basis. There is also depth penetration to consider besides other factors eg. cost, space, replacement rate, colour temp, personal preferences in visual aspects etc in selecting MH lighting vs T5 fixtures for the coral tank. Anyway... the original question is about heat... hope that has been addressed!
  3. The heat from MH bulb cannot be compared to any other light source except the sun! LOL!! I haven't found a 400w T5 yet... I don't think its possible! If you mean 36w x 11 T5... it will be cooler than a 400w MH. But the light intensity of a 400w MH will blow the socks off 36w x 11 T5.. barely... hahaha... with very good reflectors I guess..
  4. Chanbi, Take a look at this test results here between a few P04 removers. I think Biophos didn't come out as highly rated as Rowaphos/Contraphos.
  5. Guys... frankly, there's nothing in there. Just some rubbish that we moved in there but after having done so... no one contributed anything... so its a stagnant forum. I have a mind to close it down. Therefore no further 'membership' adjustment to access that forum will be done. Sorry to disappoint you guys!
  6. I have investigated this Zeovit stuff for a long time already and I have a friend overseas who is trying to convince me for some time that I should try it. The first 'no' factor was that my tank is too large and its too cost prohibitive. The 2nd was that my tank has a substrate which affects the working efficiency of this Zeovit system. Thirdly, the 'food' content and how exactly it accomplishes what it is supposed to do is not properly explained. Fourthly, I have some info which I need to dig out from another reefer overseas who has information that may not cast positive light on the Zeovit system. There is simply not enough proof available that it works and it justifies that kind of cost. Believe me, I don't mind trying but not on my tank... maybe at my office?
  7. Guys, I am so sorry but yes, it is true that the queries to provide the most recent threads and most popular threads with every page refresh is causing a slowdown in the database server and affecting surfing enjoyment for everyone. Server slowdown is unacceptable and I value a quick website above one that makes it convenient for me to view the latest threads displayed when I can click on demand and get the same results but my overall surfing is much faster.
  8. The T5 for the same wattage are able to give a much brighter light compared to the PL same wattage. So its possible that 30w T5s can possibly beat 50w PL and last a lot longer than the PLs too as PLs are notoriously hot and will degrade in output quickly in a very short time. I used to have a pendant that had 9 x 36w PLs and the heat was so tremendous that it can crack a 5mm thick glass sheet cover under it.
  9. Marineman, that is without doubt ONE of the many things that make a skimmer great. A IDEAL skimmer should basically produce a LOT of foam of good quality (fine tiny bubbles), have a fat and tall chamber ideally (for longer contact time), be easy to maintain, and most importantly, have a high turnover of water to skim out organics before they cause a negative effect on a tank and be energy efficient. The beckett skimmer fits all the above EXCEPT it is not energy efficient as it uses brute force instead to accomplish the production of good foam. Quality finishings and pricing is something to look out for too.
  10. Gee... glad you're ok! SRC is already short-handed with good mods around!
  11. Yeah... X-glare's test kits are going to be something to look out for!
  12. Hmmm.... another industrial accident.
  13. I had this fish a few years ago. Its not Scolopsis fernatus, it's Pentapodus emeryii, the Double Whiptail Bream: Info here. AT
  14. My personal opinion after testing. 1. Contraphos Koncentrate/Rowaphos. 2. Contraphos (small packs). 3. Phosguard. Have not tested Biophos or PO4 Minus yet.
  15. Hmm... have stopped visiting the livestock info threads for a long time... and its interesting how news 'still leaks' out somehow. The 'cheng hu' have their job to do and believe me... they don't really need to surf SRC for it. IMO, SRC just makes their job slightly easier coz of the freeflow of information here. The internet is a double-edged sword, in real-time. So they have laws & rules to protect, and LFS have money to make. If the bosses do it the right & proper way... there should be nothing to hide.... if its the other way.... If someone can come up with a plan to force SRC people to vote with their wallets to support properly imported livestock, tell me please. SRC can't certainly enforce this... its AVA's job. Its all up to personal conviction vs personal greed. or ... sigh.
  16. Ervine, can't wait to see your DIY car and DIY house!
  17. New acrylic will have a layer of oil/chemicals on the inner walls... affecting the bubbles and it will also prevent/delay the formation of foam... so you won't see foamrising up the wall. It does take some time to 'break in' new skimmers. Aside from that... the feeding of some food/additives will affect the water chemistry temporarily and affect foaming... esp oily food.
  18. Hmm.. you really bought them! Well, you can say goodbye to your existing corals then. I trust you are going to get rid of all your corals? Or are you going to let your angels destroy them slowly? Angels do not belong in a reef tank, so I hope you are converting to a FOWLR tank? It's the responsible thing to do.
  19. If you got the cash... you can get a proper pendant like Guieseman. Guieseman seems to be good but looking at Hon's unit which has given him so much problems... you have to ask around more such owners for their opinions. Glare's MH pendants are simple looking but functional. You can consider those if you don't mind the look. Anyway.. are you going to use a hood? If you are... pointless to buy a good-looking pendant. The things you should look for in a pendant is: 1. Weight. Is it super heavy? Are the ballasts mounted externally or internally. Sometimes ballasts can cause the FL/T5 tubes instead to crack due to heat. 2. Reflector design. Too small... poor spread... 3. Can the bulbs be moved or is it in a fixed position? 4. Are the bulbs/tubes logically placed? 5. Fixture build quality. 6. wires and sliding adjustment mechanisms provided. 7. Controllers/switches - individual on/off? timers for each bulb? 8. Anti-UV glass provided - check the grade and reliability. 9. Brand and quality means a higher resale value.
  20. You watched Friends last night and saw Joey walking away with the 'balloon dude'?
  21. If 400w can make your house trip... my house would have permanent blackout with my 1600w MH already! There are very very few 400w DE bulbs around, so I am assuming you want SE bulbs?
  22. Going by the poll.... it seems everyone likes more contrasts... this switch back to the old skin is temporary till I solve the missing scrollbar bug.
