  1. That's pretty normal. The conditions in the sea where that colony is found and the conditions in your tank are totally different.... water parameters, water quality, temperature, water flow, food levels, light levels, nutrient levels etc etc. But once they adapt (which could take days, weeks or even months), they will grow and brighten up given optimal conditions. At the other side of the coin, they will dull up again/stop growing if your tank condition worsens.
  2. Wow! This is an OLD thread! Anyway... I am using Coralife salt for the last 2 years and I find it good enough for my SPS tank! AT
  3. You have to follow the formula instructions and only harvest at the end of the maturation cycle, visually the phytoplankton culture will be at its darkest. Too early and all the fertilizer is not used up yet. Pouring the solution into your tank is a big big mistake.
  4. Don't rush out and stock your tank so quickly. Dun make the mistakes many of us have made before. You will save loads of money and heartache this way. There are a few shops in the north area.... the major ones you can check out is Bio-Ocean (quite near Yio Chu Kang MRT, take bus 86 I think), Supreme Aquarium, Hawaii (near Chong Pang, Yishun)... anymore i left out, guys?
  5. Its a 'smasher' mantis! In Sipadan, the DM dropped a small stone into a mantis' lair a few times and it always pushed it out! Wonder what would have happened if I rested my hand over its lair accidentally.... probably land in hospital with a lot of stiches if it was the spearer kind!
  6. Hi Vili Shark... are you from Israel? None of us have seen a Deltec working so most of us can't wait to do this skimmer test! What Deltec are you using now (are they as equally costly where you are?) and which Beckett model have you used before?
  7. Yup... I just its called supplementary help! The same concept as not 'suffocating' the chiller by placing it in an enclosed stand. Actually, the Artica design is kinda strange, IMO. The fan is supposed to be next to the condenser fins for maximum efficiency but its not. It does cool quite well according to the users but its still too early to tell for long term usage... the Artica chiller noise is very loud too, IMO. I can't identify if its the fan or mechanical rattling. Maybe some of the users can give more feedback for our benefit. Even my Titanium 1.25hp chiller is only able to maintain my tank at 28C at the peak these days... it was chilling my tank at 25C constant just a few weeks ago (verified by Cookiemunster). Can't wait for the hot spell to be over!! Grrrrr!!
  8. There shouldn't be any screeching sound from the pump. Is it coming from the fan or the motor? or the enclosed impeller area? Unless you can identify it is really the motor and know how to open it up, disassemble and oil the parts that is making the noise and put it all together again!
  9. Having used two Aquaconnect Red Dragon pumps before for a project... I can say they are very good for flow applications with minimal head. For pressure-rated applications with high head pressure... best to get the proper pressure-rated pumps like the MD or MX pumps. I have seen some tanks with so many 90 degree elbows that what comes out of a pump is like 'pang jeo' like that! At max only 30% output vs the supposed capacity of the pump. We should all try to minimise head pressure as much as we can. For tall beckett skimmers.... no way the Red Dragon pump will outperfom an Iwaki.
  10. Very nice.... good DIY attempt. Simple yet functional! But I guess you left out some features to reduce cost... although it will pay itself off in future for easier maintenance though.... less frustrations! Tip: You could also consider adding more supports for the down pipes in case of sudden tugs causing stress in certain joints. AT
  11. Alfa, The ATK pump model closest to the Iwaki MX-70 in litre/hr capacity, cost around S$890 to S$1,084 excluding freight, but has a weaker pressure rating of only 3.6m head vs the MX-70's 8m head. Pressure-rated pumps are classed differently from one another. IMO, the Iwakis are still the best in terms of price point/performance although running costs should be considered carefully. Comparatively, the Resun is cheap and even if it should spoil, it won't hurt to buy another one to replace compared to an Iwaki! PS - I am also joining the Resun MD gang now soon! Going to use the MD55 to run the main returns and use my MX-70 to run my twin beckett Reef Maniac DK-1 skimmer.
  12. There is a quite a bit of difference between the Japanese Iwaki and the China Resun. The fan size in an Iwaki is bigger and cools the pump better. Resuns tend to run a lot hotter. Won't be surprised if the motor is also very different. Bwilly, you can try cushioning the Resun MD pump or cover it slightly with insulation material to block the sound if it disturbs you. AT
  13. Engineers vs Managers A repeat but worth it.. A man in a hot air balloon realized he was lost. He reduced altitude and spotted a woman below. He descended a bit more and shouted, "Excuse me, can you help me? I promised a friend I would meet him an hour ago, but I don't know where I am." The woman below replied, "You are in a hot air balloon hovering approximately 30 feet above the ground. You are between 40 and 41degrees north latitude and between 59 and 60 degrees west longitude." "You must be an engineer", said the balloonist. "I am", replied the woman. "How did you know?" "Well," answered the balloonist, "everything you told me is technically correct, but I have no idea what to make of your information, and the fact is I am still lost. Frankly, you've not been much help so far." The woman below responded, "You must be in management." "I am," replied the balloonist, "but how did you know?" "Well," said the woman, "you don't know where you are or where you are going. You have risen to where you are due to a large quantity of hot air. You made a promise, which you have no idea how to keep, and you expect people beneath you to solve your problems. The fact is, you are in exactly the same position you were in before we met, but now, somehow, it's my fault."

  16. Would suddenly shifting to reverse gear at high speeds help in engine breaking? Or just the transmission?

  22. Strange.... it doesn't work for me too! I guess the filter system is fair... there's a certain line that cannot be crossed unless the consequences are understood. The game will be played until its entirety... and maybe, just maybe... respect will be mutual given.
