  1. The limitations of such bottom or midwater slots is that you probably cannot use these with higher capacity pumps for faster overall system water turnover to the sump unless you can work out the slot dimensions maximum water intake capacity or you could maybe see a potential flooding happening! At the best case scenario, water will go over the lid like an ordinary overflow but that would probably nullify the midwater slot intake somehow. Just my reasoning....
  2. Take the trouble to label your plugs/connection.. eg skimmer/return pump.. you will not regret it when you need to switch on/off the right equipment instantly in an emergency! - Adapted from tip contributed by Razo
  3. Hmmm... yeah... saw this design before... This design may work for freshwater tanks but not really applicable for marine tanks where you can't use this design if you want to incorporate a DSB. Anyway, I don't think the 'suction' through the bottom slot is good enough to move that much water into the chamber that has to travel upwards and then over the lid. The question is... what force is forcing water into bottom slot and against gravity to go over the lid? The water will simply rise until it moves over the overflow lid and gravity flow downwards at a faster rate.
  4. IMO, its very hard to make a mid or bottom intake for the overflow system and expect it to work well. Note the word 'overflow'. It means water has to go over the lid of the chamber, otherwise, a 'midflow' chamber or 'underflow' chamber would be common. Waste? I am assuming you mean detritus? These can only be effectively removed from the water column into the overflow and into the sump where the mechanical filtration could help filter out/export these waste material by the action of good water circulation. Good water circulation is defined as random flow of water currents such that there are no dead spots. Its a challenge to give good water circulation to every spot in our tanks but it has been a lot easier these couple of year with the introduction of better wave-making gadgets such as the Tunze Streams, Wave2k etc. Powerheads have limited use.
  5. Congratulations, Danano! ==================================================== All SRC Tank of the Moment Award Winners will be given a set of AquaConnect ENERGY ELEMENTS 1/2/3 250ml FREE, kindly sponsored by Bio-Ocean Technix! AquaConnect Energy Elements: 3-part complete trace elements replenisher. If we could formulate a good reef aquarium supplement in a single bottle, we would. But good is not enough for us and chemistry teaches us that mixing WILL compromise the potency of certain substances. Since that we only settle for the ultimate best, we formulated this 3-part supplement system instead. By not blending & mixing active substances like other 'convenient' products, we succeeded in delivering high-energy potent substances to intensify color, promote growth and increase vitality in reef organisms. Energy Element 1, 2, 3 have been thoroughly tested by experienced reefists and coral breeders worldwide. =====================================================
  6. This Y joint was bought from Hai Cheong Plastics, I believe.... wow... my tank looked so nice and clean then... LOL!
  7. Was one of the few times that I helped to serve BOA customers and didn't take the correct change out from the register... hahaha.... gabrraa....
  8. The Bull Shark is equally as fearsome as the Great White. Hope you know that!
  9. IMO, it will be a mistake to put a tank on Parquet flooring that is liable to not take too kindly to water damage due to spills/floodings. Maybe it will be slightly more waterproof than laminated wood floorings.... I dunno. But wood and water cannot mix. I suggest you build a channel/tray around your tank... heheheh....
  10. Vincent Dive for Liveaboards!! MV Vincent and MV White Manta has big comfortable boats, great food, a great Dive Team, a friendly, very experienced boss and the best part... fresh water melon to quench your thirst after climbing up the ladder! AT
  11. Regarding the Red Dragon pumps, you may contact Bio-Ocean Technix as we are the AquaConnect Distributor locally.
  12. I repeat. NO INDIRECT OR DIRECT MENTION OF THAT SHOP!! PLEASE RESPECT MY DECISION. I WILL DELETE ALL SUCH POSTS WITHOUT NOTICE!
  13. Do you know how to resize pix? Look up news & announcements... believe there are many tips there. I'll only help to delete oversized ones...
  14. I believe you will find a fellow cat-lover with one of my advertisers... Michael Young! In fact... I believe he may have the same cat as yours!! What breed is it??!
  15. As explained... its an honest mistake and a miscommunication between the two of them... I think its only a few dollars difference right? If it upsets you so much, I'll personally refund you that $3 for the misquoted Red Wrasse. And I'll still be happy to give you advice that will save you more than $3... I always believe that money shouldn't be made from intentionally teaching newbies bad mistakes/bad advice so my advice is not meant for you to 'lose' money... but to 'gain'. If we have the time, we will give you advice for free.... what's this $3? AT
  16. I highly doubt that claim. There are a lot more tasty things for them to eat than toxic cyano or dinoflagellates.
  17. PLEAZE guys!!! There are so many SPS keepers now... so many beautiful SPS tanks around in SRC now!! I am nothing. Anyone with the knowledge, time & money can do what I did and even much better with more money, time & knowledge! RAV-65, if you need help on mega-projects... or small ones... you know where to find me for advice... I think I may be too busy these days to give advice online on every topic... believe there are many experienced reefers by now who can help out here! AT
  18. Good nite Kenny... OKie... here's the abbreviations, folks: BD = Blue Devil Damsel SGT DF= Sergeant Major Damsel fish RW = Red Wrasse Mr Anng1971, I didn't know that you and wife took half an hour to catch the 4 fishes out. I think Justin or Kenny would normally offer their services to help fish out in less than 10 seconds... and that would help ensure that your $4 of livestock would reach your new home a little happier & less stressed out. Rest assured that our prices are comparable with many LFS around and different livestocks are priced differently depending on our suppliers, collection methods and locality. We also take ample time to acclimatize and quarantine our fishes so we cannot price our livestock extremely cheap to your expectations as our overheads are not exactly cheap either. Different businesses operate differently and we do not intend to be like the cheapest megamart in Singapore nor some overpriced boutique but instead hope to give an even better & wider choices in livestock at reasonable prices very soon as we expand our facilities & sources. As mentioned by Kenny, we are indeed sorry to have caused you so much grief & disappointment and hope that IF you do intend to drop by our store again, we'll try to make it up to you. AT on behalf of Bio-Ocean Aquarix.
  19. Kenny, I think you better speak Hainanese online I think we can all understand you a bit better! And could you please explain the abbreviations... eg. BD, SGT, RW... a bit lost myself! I think what Kenny is trying to tell you guys is that Justin apparently quoted the wrong price as he didn't take a look at the latest price list & had to rush off but Kenny is more updated and quoted the correct price to this Mr Angg1971. We are very curious about his claim that Kenny or Justin did sell him a Copperband at $12 before as they have never sold it more than $4 - 5 all this time. Mr Ang1971, perhaps did you mis-ided your fish as you are still new to the hobby? Could you take a photo of this fish if it is still alive & well? Did you buy a bannerfish or another kind of rarer butterfly fish instead? Anyway, it is good to bring this up so Bio-Ocean Aquarix can improve themselves further on their satisfactory customer service (as vouched for by many reefers here). I would like to meet you in person at the store too so I haven't met you before and would like to understand you a little more as you are so new to SRC (9 posts thus far) and its very rare for a newbie to come across as so critical of a LFS unless... but that aside... we can always talk reef and I am always more than happy to promote reefkeeping here in SRC or at my store. AT
  20. Guys, I repeat again in THIS thread... no direct or indirect references to THAT shop again in SRC. Its TABOO, understand? As long as the issues between us are not settled, please understand the situation. Thank you for your co-operation in complying with this rule. AT
  21. I recommend AZ-NO3 only to those who are desperate to reduce NO3 from dangerous to harmless levels in a hurry or lack necessary equipment or the right setup for rapid nitrate removal/reduction. For long term success, you basically need to export out nutrients faster then they break down into nitrates ie. invest in a good skimmer / or you have a Natural Nitrate Reduction system ie. a DSB or loads of LR. Using macroalgae to export NO3 by harvesting is risky in my book because you may not be able to control the algae to stay in your sump or refugium tank. You may also run the risk of having a tank crash should your macroalgae grow asexual and release caulerpa toxins into the water. Should they lack a certain additive eg. iron/iodide, they may crash, adding too much nutrients of other kind that may mean other nuisance algae may take advantage and grow in your tank as well! Just remember this saying... garbage in, garbage out. The equation must be balanced or bad things will happen. Its better to have the balanced tipped towards a system that will handle a sudden increase in pollution eg, a dead fish, anemone or coral and reduce/remove the toxins fast enough not to kill the rest of the tank... sadly, most people start with small, inadequate/inefficient skimmers, lack a reef-ready tank to incoporate more live rocks or a deep sand bed, or have inadequate husbandry skills or simply overload their immature tanks with lots of livestock with overfeeding. Nitrates CAN be easily handled... AT
  22. I think you are referring to Biophos. Contra K/Rowa is exactly the same... there is no need for any 'activation' process before you can use it.
  23. You HAVE to rinse it WHEN using it in a Fluidised Reactor. Because you are churning up the media constantly, you are very guaranteed to have all the tiny powder-likes particles enter your main tank! A pre-rinse is recommended by many reefers from the UK (who have been using FRs for a longer time than we do) to remove these very fine particles... unless you leave with seeing lots of black particles on your white sandbed!
