  1. Recognized this farm everytime you go to Pasir Ris fish farms? Dec 17, 2004 Horrific find in dog farm in Pasir Ris 3 maggot-infested Shih Tzus feed on carcass of canine By Tanya Fong EIGHTY per cent of their fur gone, their skin and private parts crawling with maggots, they whimpered and scavenged on the carcass of their companion. This was the horrific condition in which three Shih Tzus were found, barely alive, at a canine breeder's farm in Pasir Ris Farmway 2. The Agri-Food and Veterinary Authority (AVA) is investigating. The breeder, however, said the four dogs, already in bad shape, had been found in a drain by a customer, who had given them to him to be looked after. The dogs were discovered by volunteers for Metta Cats, a non-profit group that helps to house and feed abandoned cats. Its cattery is next to the breeder's farm. Said one of the volunteers, a student, who asked not to be named: 'We were there on Dec 5. We heard the dogs whimpering, and saw them scavenging on the dead dog.' PHOTO -- LAU FOOK KONG The story is described on Metta Cats' website: 'The place was filled with faeces and urine... there was only one pathetic bowl of greenish water, covered with algae.' The dog breeder, Mr Desmond Ee, 26, who runs a pet shop in Upper Bukit Timah Road, told The Straits Times in Mandarin: 'A customer found the four dogs abandoned in a drain. They were inside a cage, and were already wet and had very little hair. The customer told me to look after them for him... I didn't abuse them.' Mr Ee added that he had entrusted the care of the dogs to a foreign worker as he was too busy. Mr Bobby Tan Kok Peng, 25, a chef, said he found the dogs in a drain at Lorong Halus. 'I asked Desmond to take care of them for me... because I live in a Housing Board flat and have no space.' Volunteers contacted Mr Ee and rescued the dogs on Dec 5. They took the dogs to veterinarian Frederic Chua, who reported the matter to the AVA. One of the dogs died after three days despite attempts to save it. The surviving two are recovering at the Metta Cats' cattery. Mr K. Madhavan, head of AVA's Centre for Animal Welfare and Control, said: 'We will not hesitate to take action against the owner... if there was an act of cruelty.'
  2. Actually, those who DIYed with beckett heads need not worry much about variations as it is a fixed designed super venturi. It's those with DIY needlewheels or modified impellers. The variations for all skimmers in terms of airflow is in the pump strength and head pressure.
  3. Today's news: Indonesia tightens nationwide security after terror warnings By Devi Asmarani Indonesia Correspondent JAKARTA - INDONESIAN authorities have launched a nationwide security clampdown after warnings by several countries that terrorists are preparing to strike again in the run-up to Christmas. An operation involving nearly 17,000 police personnel was in force yesterday, with stepped up patrols and tightened security for hotels, shopping malls and churches - all potential targets of Islamic militants. 'We are doing our utmost to increase our vigilance,' Jakarta Police spokesman Ciptono said. A day earlier, Australia warned that it had received credible intelligence of an impending terrorist strike in Indonesia, possibly targeting one of three Hilton hotels located in Jakarta, Surabaya and Bali. Britain, New Zealand and Japan too have issued warnings against non-essential travel to Indonesia, and have advised their citizens to avoid places where foreigners gather during Christmas and New Year. In the past three years, Islamic militants have carried out major bomb attacks on a Bali nightclub, and the JW Marriott Hotel and the Australian embassy in the capital. Yesterday, security at all Hilton hotels in Indonesia was stepped up, with armed policemen guarding the entrances. Jakarta Hilton general manager Robert Ramey said police were also providing logistical support, with the installation of more metal detectors and closed-circuit TV systems. With 1,100 rooms, the 28-year-old hotel in the Senayan district is a favourite meeting place for politicians and lobbyists. Mr Ramey said yesterday the threat warning had had no major impact on its occupancy rate. 'If people checked out for security reasons, they didn't tell us.' The Jakarta Hilton has a current 55 per cent occupancy rate. Its 256-unit apartment building is 85 per cent occupied, mostly by Japanese. Meetings and seminars attended by government officials were still being held there yesterday. But at least one seminar organised by the Unesco agency was moved to another hotel as a precautionary measure. The terror warnings have not deterred Singaporeans it seems. Eight travel agents and airlines told The Straits Times they had not received any cancellations for tours and flights to the country. These are fully booked until January. Said a spokesman for Ananda Travel: 'Things have happened in southern Thailand and Egypt and people are still travelling there for holidays. Bali is sold out until the middle of January.' Lawyer R. Chandra Mohan, who makes regular trips to Jakarta, said: 'If you have to go for a meeting or something, you just have to go. They've been having warnings for so long anyway.'
  4. Do you figure out the airflow by opening the air valve completely or do you tune for an optimum bubble size and then measure the airflow? They both should give different readings. Free can borrow or not?
  5. Wow! You got an airflow meter!!! How was this test done? The 4 airlines were connected to this meter?
  6. Nice pix Roidan! Now I want to go back to Tokyo again!!
  7. Sure you can try. Everyone leaves a trail. Hint: Cameras, electronic transactions, phone logs etc. Big brother is ALWAYS watching... somehow.
  8. Check with our advertiser, Reef Depot. They carry Tunzes.
  9. Jakarta, the capital is 874 kilometers from Singapore, about 3 hrs by air. Batam is only 45mins away by ferry.
  10. To all reefers here going to Jakarta on business or pleasure, take heed. Got forwarded this from a reliable source I*D that this is a serious warning that we should take note. FYI please. SOS Security Alerts <secAlerts@internationalsos.com> 16/12/2004 01:36 AM To: GN/MD-CS_HR/TH/Temasek Group@TEAMS cc: Subject: International SOS Global Security Daily Digest - December 15, 2004 International SOS Global Security Daily Digest Security Special Advisory - Indonesia Country Risk Rating High December 15, 2004 08:38 GMT Specific Terrorist Threat to International Hotel In Indonesia The Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade has just issued updated travel advice for Indonesia. This advice specifically states that terrorists are ready to carry out an attack in Jakarta, and that the attack may be directed at the Hilton Hotel. The Jakarta International Hilton Hotel is located at Jalan Gatot Subroto Jakarta. The advice was issued on 15 December 2004 at 18:54:48, AEDT. The specific text of the advice is as follows: "We have received credible new information suggesting terrorists are ready to carry out an attack shortly in Indonesia, possibly targeting a Hilton Hotel. Other targets cannot be ruled out. In light of this information, Australians in Jakarta, and elsewhere in Indonesia, are advised to avoid all international hotels and other places where foreigners are known to gather." SOS recommends that clients consider this warning seriously and take measured steps to minimize their exposure in Indonesia immediately. Whilst this warning specifically identifies the Hilton Hotel as the potential target, with increased security being put in place, it is likely that terrorist resources will be diverted to other suitable targets. The most likely modus operandi is a vehicle borne improvised explosive device, similar to previous attacks on the JW Marriott and the Australian Embassy. In light of the specificity of this latest report, we strongly advise all SOS Members currently in Jakarta to avoid all international hotels for the next 72 hours or until further advice is provided. In addition to hotels, all other locations that are primarily frequented by foreigners should be avoided. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
  11. it's just a reminder that no matter where one hides behind 'anonymous' IP addresses, you CAN be traced. It's just whether you have the $$$ or the connections to trace the offender. You can run but you can't hide.
  12. I am not going to comment on how other sites are managed but SRC has certain house rules and etiquette to help maintain the peace. We have gone thru enough to understand the implications that unbridled bickering brings. Your co-operation is essential as I will not allow SRC to be a platform for people to attack one another, even among sponsors. True, all this has taken place at another forum but I have been following the case and would like all concerned to be reminded of the above. Reefing is a hobby, and unless you have commercial interests, stay out of such politics and games, it certainly takes the joy out of reefing once you get involved in such stuff.
  13. Would it upset you guys that much if you find out an American-based or European-based company or brand has their products made in some third-world country? Even Iwaki pumps are now made in China. I also remember this line from Armageddon, on board the Russian space station or was it the space shuttle.... "American components or Russian.... ALL MADE IN TAIWAN!!!"
  14. Ah... the infamous "No Bullshit Test!"... I can't remember... but it's all here! It's all over already. Or rather, it never took place!
  15. Simple logic regarding water change. If you burp, fart, shit & haven't taken a bath for a few months in an enclosed room with a dead decomposing body next to you, how do you rate the quality of your life? I am not even going to ask about how much CO2 will build and how soon the oxygen will be depleted. Unless you get an industrial-grade air ozonizer, air-filteration unit, a ton of air fresheners and have access to a toilet to flush away your waste out of the room etc, I guess you'll be pretty miserable. I'm sure your livestock will want you to invest in very good equipment and have good husbandry skills to maintain/replenish the water parameters. Either that, or be consistent with the water changes.
  16. Oh wow!! We could have been world-famous if we did that skimmer shootout locally! Too bad it never took place.
  17. What's the big fuss all about? There are many products out there, some new, some are products of rebranding, reselling, repackaging, remarketing products etc. Different businesses are run differently. The consumer usually doesn't care less unless the product is harmful, expensive or useless. Dun like, dun buy... simple. Only competitors would if they want to jostle for market share. So what's the fuss all about? I can see where all this is leading into. Whatever the motives behind it, caution should be exercised. Pouring oil to fire carries a risk of burning oneself. It might be a game to some, but it could be someone else's livelihood. BTW, keep an eye out for tomorrow's papers... regarding an incident by a malicious person/business competitor involving a LFS that happened earlier this year. It does bring to mind how ugly the local scene can get. Sigh!
  18. CO2 is a gas, a byproduct of industrialization & global warming and will dissolve in water, causing acidic water.... which means trouble for calcium carbonate... aka corals.
  19. This comparison is probably a subjective visual guage only and not an accurate assessment of the bubble quality. The height & diameter of the skimmer body will affect the size (the higher up the column the bigger the bubbles). The beckett bubble also has a much longer route to travel compared to the BK or Deltec due to the downtube. The velocity may also cause some bubbles to collide and combine into bigger ones. Also, how the air flow is tuned is also another factor. All the skimmers need an optimal air flow to get the right bubble size. Tuned wrongly, you'll get larger bubbles! That said.... my guess is A: BK, B: Beckett, C: Deltec
