  1. It's a virus that spoofs email addresses. Quite common. Don't ever open it and do update your anti-virus definitions regularly.
  2. Alright... a clue... yes, its a wrasse... and its quite uncommon in the past although we are seeing a lot more of these coming in nowadays.
  3. Oh... thanks to decentkid for pointing out that I have not even an answer.... It's a Pycnogonids or Sea Spider.
  4. The death toll could go up much much higher. I believe there are many many poor people in India or Sri Lanka in these coastal areas who are probably not even registered with their own government and may not show up in birth/death records & such.
  5. Unless you diving at the shoreline in the direct path of the Tsunami, you should be fine. Here's a report from a diver at Phuket. report from Richelieu rock Tsunami survivor describes underwater horror By Karen Kaufman "Our boat was lucky. We saw a cruise liner stuck near the islands with three people dead," said Londoner Naomi Hayim from her boat off the coast of Phuket yesterday. Hayim, who is deaf, and 13 other people (including another deaf person) were diving at Richelieu Rock, a collection of submerged pinnacles renowned for its visiting whale sharks north of the Surin Islands (about 60 kilometers off the west coast of Phang Nga province) when the tsunami hit. "We realized that the wave went right over us as we were diving," she said yesterday via SMS messaging on her cell phone. She said the giant wave created a whirlpool with incredibly strong currents. The divers were swept under, completely losing each other and severely hampered by poor visibility. All 14 eventually surfaced and found each other, though an exhausted Hayim could not be certain yesterday how long they had actually been submerged. Luckily all 14 were unharmed. Hayim, 26, was brought up in London's Maida Vale and is a divemaster and marine biologist. She also studied clown fish and sea anemones at the Institute of Marine Biology in Eilat in 2000. A battle with meningitis when she was just a baby left her deaf. She has never, however, let this stop her from doing anything she put her mind to and graduated from Queen Mary, University of London with a degree in marine and freshwater biology. Hayim is part of Worldwide Dive and Sail, a company that offers seven-day sailing and diving trips aboard a 21-meter yacht. Her ability to lip-read and sign enable her to teach deaf and hard-of-hearing people how to dive. The yacht left Phuket on Friday for what was supposed to be a week-long underwater adventure for holiday-makers who joined from Britain, the Netherlands and Austria. There were no Israelis on board - as Naomi put it "I'm the only Jew here." Yesterday afternoon, the boat and its dozen passengers turned back toward Phuket, but by early evening they were instructed to stay out at sea for fear of aftershocks and because the port at Phuket had been ruined. Hayim said that they are now waiting to hear from the Thai authorities when they will be able to go back to land. As the trip was due to last a week, the boat still has enough food and equipment for several more days. Hayim's group was one of several diving excursions that were at sea when the tsunami struck. "We are very lucky that nothing terrible happened," she said last night.
  6. From visual assessment, the bubbleking seems to have slightly finer bubbles..... very very expensive fine bubbles!
  7. Gosh... About 10,226 people were killed and thousands more were missing... this is MAJOR DISASTER!! A wholesaler friend feels that all his collection centres in Sumatra may be entirely wiped out... he has been trying to call them since this morning and there is zero response. They are near the epicentre. I believe the ecological disaster has not been reported yet.... and it will have consequences to our hobby. I am sure many reefs are now broken.
  8. Man, my wife and I could have been in Phuket diving if we went ahead with our original plan! *shudder* I just saw the video coverage... patong beach is completely devastated... I hope my fishing friends who lives there are alright!
  9. Closer to home: Malaysia death toll by the killer tidal waves
  10. I think only mine and roidan's skimmers are 6ft tall... let me check, whew... i am running an MX-70!
  11. Did you take the time to slowly acclimatize them to your tank water?
  12. Hey, its been some time already!! Answers! Answers!!
  13. I am so angry that I'm complaining to MITA. You will have a hundred reporters at your doorstep by tomorrow morning. I am comtemplating an eye transplant after the damaged caused by your posting. Prepare to hear from my lawyer too. I'll send you a bill too for my monitor, which cracked when the photos were displayed.
  14. Yup... that's Nanook's! I'm toying with the idea of modding my skimmer... its entirely possible to blend the strengths of beckett with the strengths of the H&S/Deltec skimmer's design on recirculation. Actually, for my skimmer, dwell time is not an issue, I got the height and the diameter. For smaller beckett skimmers, perhaps recirculation is a very good way to get even better skimming results? So why do I still want it? A question of quick skimming or slow skimming... how thorough a cleaning per pass would I want? I must be bored to think about such issues. If a beckett skimmer can be designed to be recirculating and is tested against a recirculating Deltec... which would win?
  15. My theory is that you do need rocks that are rather dense and big in size to get good denitrification results.
  16. Zerocool.. that's just a pix of a quad beckett. A recirculating beckett is like a H&S/Euroreef needlewheel skimmer where there is a water feed into the skimmer body and the pumps are on a closed loop. I'm just looking into further increasing dwell times (not that my current diameter/height advantages isn't enough, it is!) So I am looking into modifying my current skimmer such that my beckett housings are on a closed loop with the bottom box and I feed water at a slower rate seperately. Something like this?
  17. This post is in real bad taste, I will be forced to put into place a policy against such postings in future, to protect the young and innocent. Standby for an announcement shortly. The guilty party is now currently under investigation for his motives in causing such public distress.
  18. After AlfaRomeo's comments on recirculating becketts, I am now seriously thinking about combining the power of the beckett injector with the sound theory of longer dwell times using recirculation. I already have a large diameter body and very tall height (I'm talking about my skimmer, and not me!), which means that I am getting good skimming. Now if I could just modify my beckett skimmer for recirculation, I could potentially make it the most efficient + powerful skimmer in the whole world!! I could ask for a ransom of ONE MILLION DOLLARS!!! *finger in corner of mouth* Imagine dual becketts on a MX-70 on a closed loop, pulling out every molecule of DOC in the water that's recirculated inside my skimmer on a dwell time of two minutes!! Or I could make use of reduced head pressure and use a MD55 instead to save electricity? What do some of the gurus here think about this idea? I'm still researching the best ways to modify my skimmer..... so any input would be appreciated! AT
  19. Sorry to hear that reefbum. That's quite an aggressive anthia you got there... never heard of one ever killing another species before!
  20. I saw two fights while walking out from Chinablack to Hilton... the streets were FULL of spray cans, I can't imagine the explosions everytime a heavy car or bus roll over these cans. Inspite of being pissed, seeing the crowd, I place my wallet down the front of my jeans... hehe.... can never be too careful! Anyway, never leave your bag unattended even for a split second in crowded places. At the last Zoukout, my friend had her bag stolen right from under her eyes, it was less than 1 ft away from her at eye level. Oh... and watch out for the molesters...
