The Singapore Reef Club was born on 17 September 2002.... that makes this forum board barely 2 months old! Anyway, welcome to SRC!!! -
OOOUUUUEEEEHH!!! STAY IN TOPIC LEH!!!! <_<

Actually let's try to stay in topic.... Makes everyone's life easier to track relevant info and ideas.....

Do you have an anemone then? They are known to swallow fishes who blunder into them at night.

Was supposed to go chionging tonite but had some guests over at my place! I have a friend who is gonna be dressed as Hannibal Lector with the mask and straitjacket and he'll be wheeled into Centro in a trolley surrounded by a couple of friends in FBI T-shirts!!! But I guess this year its pretty quiet... not many pubs celebrating... perhaps its an American festival and they're afraid of any JI fanatic bombing their place!

Hey Robe... you're back! Heard you were outstationed? How's your tank doing?

Guess what I saw today in my refugium... a nudibranch! It's almost the same colour as the red algae is was in... so it's well-camouflaged! I hope it's herbivourous only. -
Up to you but I prefer that for sentimental reasons... they have been together for years....

How to use Kalkwasser
Achilles Tang replied to clowntrigger's topic in New to the Marine Aquaria Hobby
Kalk can be dosed differently. The safest way to let the residue settle and slowly drip the clearer part of the water into the tank. Anthony Calfo (one of the US experts) simply scoops a bit of kalk, mix with cold water and pour the whole mix into his sump. I use a combination of both.... as my tank was newly setup... I simply dumped in the whole mix.... no corals or inhabitants to worry about. The snow is actually much bigger flakes that only forms when mixed with air improperly and reacts to the water to form flakes. Much bigger than the residue powder. Happened to me once when I mixed salt mix and dumped kalk in there right away.... stupid mistake. Some aquarists in the US mentioned no harm with pouring the whole milky slurry into the tank... some say no way and the clearer portion of water is better. -
Well... who wants my tangs have to PM me quick... so I can reserve them for you!

Buffer the PH to 8.3.. just use Seachem Reef Buffer. Builder for KH Kalk for calcium and increase PH. Each got its own purpose.

How to use Kalkwasser
Achilles Tang replied to clowntrigger's topic in New to the Marine Aquaria Hobby
Follow the instructions on the bottle... you won't go wrong. Basically mix tapwater with kalkwasser powder. So its good for water top-up plus you put in the calcium and stuff. There are a lot of pros vs cons. Pros 1. It boosts calcium 2. It boosts PH and KH 3. It precipates out phosphate 4. Concentrated slurry injected on top of aiptasia kills them quickly! Cons 1. Causes a snowstorm if the kalk isn't mixed well and slowly and poured directly into your tank. Those flakes are caustic and can burn corals. 2. Time consuming to prepare... a little! -
If it was the trigger which did it... there would be evidence... they are messy eaters... or perhaps his accomplices, the hermit crabs, cleared up the evidence!

That's where I get all my PVC stuff from... excluding the bulkheads and clear check valves from the USA. I get mine from the Kallang branch, there's one in the east I think.

Bawater... Kalkwasser doesn't reduce PH... it increases it!!!!! A newly mixed slurry of Kalkwasser has a PH of around 12 to 13!!!!!!! That is why it is recommended to dose kalk at night when the PH naturally drops!

Project New Reef by Achilles Tang
Achilles Tang replied to Achilles Tang's topic in General Reefkeeping_
Hi Steno, I am aiming for about 4 to 5 big fishes (4 inch max) and the rest will be small/tiny fishes.... I love the shoaling effect of anthias... and they really add a lot of colour to the tank. Currently I have: 1 yellow tang 1 purple tang 1 Powder blue tang 1 school of anthias - mixed: 3 dispar, 5 lyretail, 3 squarespot. 3 red firefish 2 purple firefish 1 pink skunk clown 1 golden-striped maroon clown 1 fairy wrasse 1 fairy wrasse A pity I had to let go of my other 2 PTs... but I think its time for some more variety of tangs... and I do have a dream fish.. an Achilles Tang (but of course!) My anthias shoal together a lot even though they are mixed. There is a male lyretail in there. They started eating mysis right away... lucky me! -

The OINK method wouldn't work as well as mine... trust me! Ok... ok... this is getting stale fast! Thanks Cedric! I am not showing pix of my main tank yet... still quite a lot of space for corals... need to do a bit of shopping! -
You sure they are not hiding in your LR? Two things... something came out in the night and whacked them! Mantis? Giant bristleworm? Coneshell? Starfish?
-
Yes I think so... I only dropped them off on Monday.

Cannot guarantee... but these two PTs school together with the other PT and YT. How big is your tank btw? I would rather know that you guys keep big tanks before I feel the PTs can be comfortable in them.
