  1. If you visit the Richard Durso site, that's what he says! I have my durso standpipe exactly as he designed it. I have no real clue to what the adverse effects are.... !
  2. Pardon me, but I think your standpipe is too submerged. The water level should be midway of the inverted L-pipe's opening. Your whole L-pipe is submerged!
  3. That's it!!! To put an end to Tanzy's bored, mindless ramblings... I hereby appoint him the one and only resident sea turtle of the Singapore Reef Club! Thy appointment has been changed, Tanzy!
  4. Is there a reason why PUB won't sell Newater to the public as it is? <_<
  5. I consider all crabs as not reefsafe.... KILL THEM ALL!!!! j/k. Actually, there are only two species of crabs with are reef-safe... they truly are vegetarian... one is the Emerald crab, the other I forgot! Even some species of hermits eat tubeworms and disturb coral polyps.
  6. Bwahahahhaha!!! Actually, I am walking on a tightrope everyday... when I flooded the room two weeks ago due to carelessness... she just shook her head and took out the mop!
  7. But.... If you promise them that they are MORE important than that stupid glass box and all the eeky stuff inside... and bring them for HK shopping trips, give them loads of TLC and jewellery.... promise to tidy up the area and mop the sticky floor and host housewarming parties for guests to admire your tank and make her feel house-proud... then.... heh! And to quote the funny guy from the Yun Nan ad.... "and its works!" She may even help you do tank cleaning, the setup, glass cleaning and floor mopping and fish feeding... like my wife does! I am sooo lucky!
  8. They have very strong stings... like aiptasia. Even clown fishes avoid them. And they multiply fast.
  9. Main tank is sold to my wife's friend. Still awaiting collection! If he doesn't come and collect soon, I'll offer it to you guys! Grrrrr! But yes, sump is available... without contents... oh wait.. I can throw in the eggcrate partitions...
  10. Chicks dig reef tanks! They will go 'woah', then 'how much money do you put into this hobby', 'how much tender loving care goes into this tank' and then... they'll think you are a SNAG with loads of cash.... KER CHING!!! When you marry them, then they'll realize that you'll still never give up your first love and continue to provide TLC and pour in more money into the tank which could have gone into their Hong Kong shopping trips, jewellery pieces and beauty treatments! DOH!!!!
  11. For a FO tank, you don't really have to worry about calcium, kh, ph as much as reef tank. Even a minute change in phosphate levels can affect corals. I guess your FO tank's filtration is pretty established, so your PH and SG is pretty much the only things you have to worry about. The type of fishes you keep is also a factor, hardier species can tolerate a lot of abuse, I mean lack of maintenance.
  12. Hahaha... there is no sea turtle level! Tanzy's chasing his own tail!
  13. Don't worry about PH precipitating your calcium! At this point of time, your calcium levels are too low. I suspect your alk levels are too low. Your alk needs to be consistently high with your PH... try to get it up to around 10 dKH if you wish to keep acros. Your calcium levels won't go up if your KH is low.
  14. Kinda hard to tell... you have to zoom in closer. Polyps usually come in a bunch, yours seemed to be spaced out. I think they look like rock anemonies. Aiptasia has very long wavy arms and a consistent colour, usually yellow or brown totally... rock anemones are dark brown with short stumpy ones, usually with bright green ends. Both are considered pests.
  15. Hi all, Not wanting to really show off my tank as I have so much space in my tank and not enough corals! So I will need a couple more weeks to stock up... and you know LFS supply is limited now... so be patient! All will be revealed in good time!
  16. Well.... I bought it at Marinelife but you can get it at most marine LFS... It's Coralife brand Actinic PL tube, 36 watts, 16 inch, 2G11 pin arrangement, at around $50 to $60!
  17. Ok... so what's in the waste water then? Is it still safe to use it for other purposes? eg. culture water for plankton, artemia breeding?
  18. Look to the right... there's an algae next to the bleached stuff... so it could be the same stuff.
  19. What coral is that? Looks like a bubble coral to me. Can't really ID it. Is that stuff on the inside flesh or the outside skeleton? Looks like some bleached algae runners to me... How long have you had your coral and what kind of tank setup do you have? Inclusive water parameters...
  20. Blue doesn't mean its has actinic phosphors in them. The blue should peak at 420 nanometers. The box should be clear that its actinic 03 lights. If not, it'll just be a bright blue light. O3 are usually dimmer... deep purple colour. In my old PL DIY lighthood... the centre blue PL is the true actinic PL. The centre left and right is Blue PL. It only makes the corals flourescent a little... whereas the 03 PL has the disco UV light glow effect. Ever seen your teeth glow bright green in a club? heh!

  23. What's wrong with our tap water?? All these years people have been using tap water to make saltmix and I haven't heard of any difference to using that vs RO/DI. Can someone with the experience share with us?
