  1. It's not a must to have a calcium reactor as it is expensive unless you DIY your own and get a pump and CO2 canister plus bubble counter and needle valve. It helps automate calcium dosing... so once setup right... you won't really have to care about your calcium levels, alk and PH levels to a certain extent... Dosing kalk may be more beneficial as it has other side benefits of raising PH (low PH is a prob with many tanks) and also helps to precipate out phosphates... a common problem too.
  2. I once had a anthia with the same problem... pop eye! It went away after 2 weeks... but unfortunately it died with the same batch of lyretail anthias I got... must have been caught by cyanide... coz the dispars that I got together with them are still doing fine... and they were all eating well. It could be damage caused by accidental rubbing against a hard object... or it could be an internal problem....kidneys/liver.... read it somewhere.
  3. Hmmm.... looks like you have to lie down on the floor to enjoy your tank huh? AT
  4. Curious... but are you referring the Maiden's Hair algae to Turtleweed? They are different you know... I haven't seen Maiden's Hair sold in LFS before.
  5. Hmm.. maybe you dun game much... but if you do... you can easily see that it spells as D E V I L . Now you know... heh.
  6. Oh yeah... due to the unit being very heavy, weakened suckers will give way after time... and cause the powerhead to drop down... IMO very dangerous... it nearly damaged my corals a few times... once.... it churned up my sandbed coz it fell nozzle down. Hmmm.... I think I will move this to the Product Review Section since it became 'reviewed' thoroughly!!!!
  7. Hi guys! Welcome to the Singapore Reef Club!!! Thanks for your compliments... like I said before... I just started the engine... and its up to the members to fuel the journey! Trust that you'll make yourselves at home here... too bad you guys came in too late.. you missed our X'mas gathering at my place just yesterday! Anyway... we have people from all ages, races, backgrounds, professions and family comittments... many of us are already married... some with kids... some are very young, some are newly engaged... but one thing in common.... WE ARE ALL MAD REEFERS!!!!
  8. Well... I would recommend a good and tested gas compressor-type chiller, not those which use peltier technology like the ice-probe... those are only suitable for small tanks. Teco is a good brand and so far from what I know... it's the most reliable one in the market as people tend to upgrade to Teco after trying other brands... I consider a chiller as one of the most important equipment after lights or filtration... as you don't want to risk recreating El-Nino in your coral tank... BLEACHING caused by heat spike. Happened to me coz of carelessness and bad luck... and being out of town... I lost a few prized corals. I still 'heart-pain' thinking about it.
  9. I know some people in the states who do that... and I have done it myself too when I had a very bad spell of marine velvet outbreak with new fishes that I bought.... Honestly, I don't think it's a very safe thing to do... I dun mind the smell... but it's better to just soak the food in garlic juice and not pour it into the water direct. Note that you will have an oil film on the water surface after that.
  10. IME.... they suck. Once the rotating head gets clogged with coralline algae, green algae or slime or calcium deposits, they stop rotating. They are better suited for FW. I had the 228... big, ugly and stopped working in a few weeks. It's pain to take out the powerhead every month to go and scrub it. After some time, I didn't get bother... and threw it away.
  11. To those who haven't gone in to serve National Service... just remember... you are nothing but primodial seabed scum... so hold your bald head up with pride... and don't be a keng king or you'll forever hold that reputation in your platoon... remember... some of them may become your colleagues or bosses or worse, your boss's friend... and what they say you are in NS... is very much possible what you are in real life. but based on merit on how you wish to prove yourself during BMT... you may become a Rotifer (Officer) (heh)... or be lobo as possible (drift with the tide like plankton) and hope time pass quickly... or you can choose to sign on as a specialist and ride the economic woes out unlike us... heh. Aiyah... NS is just a phase of life... you won't regret it... just make it fun for yourself...and when you ROD... you will laugh as you drink beer next time with your ex-squad/platoon mates....
  12. Totally unrelated... using Phosguard and the change in your clownfish behaviour. Clowns are well-known to change from cute little pretty fishes to mean, bad-tempered and ugly monsters... on the same scale as damsels. So prepare to dislike your clownfish or damsel as they age... they become more territorial... attacking you, other fishes or even corals (I mean if you move corals near their nesting area). They also lose their bright colours over time. I have a yellow-banded maroon clown which was an angel in my old tank.... and therefore I decided against my better judgement to keep him in my new one. Just a couple weeks ago, I moved my aveopora coral next to his adopted fox coral and he proceeded to bite a few polyps off my aveopora!!!!!!! Grrrrr.... and to think I was considering a bright red male mate for her...
  13. Garlic extract = Squeeze garlic till you get the juices out. Ok ok... if you want a more detailed way to do it... get a garlic press... a tong like kitchen thing that you can pop in a few pieces of the garlic clove... make sure you peel the garlic skin off first... then squeeze to crush the garlic... don't sweat if you see mush coming out... scoop out the mushy bits... put it back into the garlic press (hope that's what it's called)... with a bit of water... and then squeeze it again... repeat process until no more juice can come out... if you get a few pieces of garlic into the bowl of garlic juice its fine... sometimes the fishes may eat it. If you wish to save time... just get the Seachem Garlic Guard. I used to go to the pharmacy to get the Kyolic Aged Garlic Extract... one tiny bottle costs a bomb. AT
  14. I assume these LFS are marine ones? TTboy was in KL on Wed but he couldn't find any marine LFS in the yellow pages there.
  15. Jon from Coral Farm is coming for our Reef Club gathering. He's a marine biologist now with Coral Farm. He used to work for Underwater World and if I am not wrong... he helped design the jellyfish tank! He would be an excellent source of such info for you jellyfish freaks.. heh! ; Me too! You will need to custom build a Kreisel tank for jellyfish... that's the only tank configuration you can keep.. do a search on this forum for Kreisel, it was covered before. AT
  16. A lesson to be learnt here: A wrong screw could cause a lot of inconvenience later.
  17. Actual radio conversation released by the Chief of Naval Operations, 10-10-95 #1: Please divert your course 15 degrees to the North to avoid a collision. #2: Recommend you divert YOUR course 15 degrees to South to avoid a collision. #1: This is the Captain of a US Navy ship. I say again, divert YOUR course. #2: No, I say again, you divert YOUR course. #1: THIS IS THE AIRCRAFT CARRIER ENTERPRISE, WE ARE A LARGE WARSHIP OF THE US NAVY. DIVERT YOUR COURSE NOW! #2: This is a lighthouse. Your call.
  18. Your Loving Daughter, Mary Dear Mom and Dad, It has now been three months since I left for college. I have been remiss in writing and I am very sorry for my thoughtlessness. I will bring you up to date now, but before you read on, please sit down. YOU ARE NOT TO READ ANY FURTHER UNLESS YOU ARE SITTING DOWN, okay? Well, I am getting along pretty well now. The skull fracture and the concussion I got when I jumped out of the window of my dormitory when it caught fire shortly after my arrival are pretty well healed now. I only spent two weeks in the hospital and I now can see almost normally and I only get those sick headaches once a week. Fortunately, the fire in the dormitory and my jump was witnessed by an attendant at the gas station near the dorm and he was the one who called the fire department and the ambulance. He also visited me at the hospital and since I had nowhere to live because of the burnt-out dorm, he was kind enough to invite me to share his apartment with him. It's really an attic room, but it's kind of cute. He is a very fine boy and we have fallen deeply in love and are planning to get married. We haven't exactly set the date yet, but it will be before my pregnancy begins to show. Yes, Mom and Dad, I am pregnant. I know how you are looking forward to being grandparents and I know you will welcome the baby and give it the same love and devotion and tender care you gave me as a child. The reason for the delay in our marriage is that my boyfriend has some minor infection which prevents us from passing our premarital blood tests and I carelessly caught it from him. This will soon clear up with the penicillin injections I am taking daily. Now that I have brought you up to date, I want to tell you that there was no dormitory fire. I do not have a concussion or a skull fracture, I was not in the hospital, I am not pregnant, I am not engaged, I do not have syphilis and in fact there is no man in my life. However, I am getting a "D" in history and a "F" in science class and I wanted you to see these marks in their proper perspective. Your loving daughter, Mary
  19. I used PO-4 Minus before... just like AZ-NO3... my phosphate levels were reduced to zero in a couple of days...
