  3. 1. SLOGAN OF THE WEEK "Dyslexic Satan worshipers sell their souls to Santa." 2. UGH! There were three little babies sitting next to each other in shopping carts in the grocery store check-out line. The first little baby says, "Ugh, look at this -- my mom just bought strained plums!" The second baby says, "You think that's bad -- my mom just bought strained peas!" The third baby says, "You think you guys got it bad? How would you like to share a breast with a guy that smokes cigars!" 3. A MISUNDERSTANDING A few monks were sitting around one day talking about the Scriptures and how many times they had been translated. One monk decided to translate them for himself, so went into the library and started to work. He was down there for hours, the hours turned into days. No one saw him for quite some time, and the other monks began to wonder. Finally, one day, a fellow monk went to the library to look for him. When he found him, the monk that was translating the Scriptures was crying his eyes out, nothing like he had ever seen before. When he asked what was wrong, the monk told him, "It said 'celebrate,' not celibate!"
  4. Patrick, ex Hong Leong.. now his own company is importing in Schuran products. My HK friend is the official distributor for Schuran in Asia actually! If you like, I can him to quote for those interested.
  5. Personally, I think the 400 watt radiums even when driven with blueline ballasts are a little too blue for me.... it's extremely bright for sure... I much prefer the colours of 10k bulbs.... More white! I just need some one to show me a 400w radium with 10k bulb combo.
  6. I have been hunting for chaetomorpha for a long long time. They don't sell it. It comes as hitchhikers on my macroalgae ie. attached to red macroalgae. But I don't see them growing fast enough. Talking about macroalgae... my refugium is a mess now. Some of my macros have collapsed. I don't know whether it's because in my efforts to combat my current hair algae/cyano problem, I stopped dosing iron supplements. I made the mistake of not removing the collapsing macroalgae and that may have been responsible for fueling further nuisance microalgae growth.
  7. Hi DG (long name you got there!) WELCOME TO SRC!!! Good to have you come out of the closet and admit you are a reefer! LOL! I like your rockscaping! To answer you: anyone here using 20KK or radium MH bulbs? - Yes there are.... but radiums are too blue to be used on their own. So you need to mix bulbs. I'm considering using 2 x 250W 20KK without actinics or 2 x 10KK with actinics. - I like the look of 10k with actinics. White with a tinge of blue. 20ks are very dim. Quite apart from aesthetic considerations, I was wondering if the PAR of 20KK bulbs is significantly less than that of the 10KKs? - yes, 20ks have lower par than 10k. So if you like the look of 20ks... go higher wattage. Checked some websites but there wasn't much info about this, considering the Radiums are relatively new on the market. - Actually, there are a lot of feedback on Radiums especially in RC. To get the 10k look w actinics... they recommend 400 watts overdriven by Blueline e-ballast... very ex and can't get in SG. I think it's definitely a ballast problem with yr current MHs... but 70 watts only?? You used to keep a FW planted tank? What ever you do.. for your new reef tank... take it slow! For a tank that size... you may seriously want to look at a REAL skimmer soon. AT
  8. Hi Chanbi, Sorry... misspelled... it's Secchi stick. Here's the description from the FAF site: -------------------------- MICROALGAE DENSITY MEASURER Simple device allows you to estimate microalgae cell densities. Based on the Secchi principle. White dot mounted on a calibrated plastic stick is lowered down into a well lighted microalgae culture until the dot disappears. Depth is recorded off the scale and approximate cell density is obtained from chart provided. Chart provides density conversions on Nannochloropsis, Chlorella, Isochrysis, Tetraselmis, Pyramimonas, and Nannochloris. Manufactured by Florida Aqua Farms Inc. Can be easily calibrated to suit your specific microalgae and conditions. ------------------------------- The thing is: without the Culture Manual and the Secchi stick, you won't be able to guesstimate the cell density before you feed your tank. Over time, you will be able to guess the density of your culture just by judging the colour of your culture. I have been able to get to about 2.5 on the Secchi scale.. which is about.. urr... I can't remember... but it's pretty dense (considering that I don't use CO2 to culture). AT
  9. Can you post a pix? Izzit fungal infection or it's just torn?
  10. That has to be one of the worst thing to wish on an aquarist!
  11. What would be very important is: 1. Ensure that your tank is sitting on a support beam and also against a support column as far as possible. 2. Don't ever have a big tank sitting in the centre of the room. All that weight in the middle of the floor is risky. 3. Get a stand that spreads the weight evenly on the floor ie. flat base. A stand that has four legs will see all it's weight concentrated on 4 spots... not a good idea at all. If you take the above precautions, you won't appear on the front page of the Straits Times.
  12. Hi TTboy, X, we went down together and enquired... Yeah... TTBoy... was it $400? or more? US$ or S$... coz I forgot.
  13. http://www.themarinecenter.com/zebrasomagemmatum1.htm Check out what they said: "They're as hardy as other members of the genus and require no special care, except a fat wallet." That says a lot right?
  14. No way...!!! I'll get my ###### beaten bad and blue by you!
  15. I got trashed in Bnet so many times I could cry. Oh well... I am newbie actually. I am still trying to learn the BO and best Strats for the Hs. Maybe I should try NE next... AT
  16. Sorry, I had to delete that post.. the pix is simply too big. Use a imaging software to resize your pix to 600 pixels wide Anyway, the tang shown above is a Gem Tang. Very very expensive. I heard from Coral Farm that if you want to bring in, it will cost around $400 a piece or more.
  17. A long long time ago... I onced used a big but cheap Sander PS as recommended by a LFS who said it was good... it was wooden airstone driven. It was fine for the first month... and then when I began stocking more fishes.... my nightmare began. So, it didn't work well and I was forced to upgrade to my current H&S Euroreef skimmer which served me to this very day. When I upgraded, my water quality improved tremedously and my cyano problem then disappeared. A protein skimmer is 1st in importance because it is responsible for removing all dissolved organics, faster than your biological systems ever could. It is responsible for creating a higher dissolved oxygen content in your tank. With a good and well-rated PS, you can have cleaner water and the means to stock more and feed more. Morale of the story: You cannot skimp by getting a cheap PS because you will regret it later as you will waste money upgrading or restocking dying livestock. Save money and buy the best you can. It is more important than lights, IMO. As of now, with my new tank, I am experiencing the same problem of past as my H&S Euroreef has become under-sized for my tank. I have a bad outbreak of hair algae and cyanobacteria now. So, I am installing a DIY aerofoamer-styled 4 ft tall beckett-driven skimmer rated for a 1000 gallons. It will be BIG and LOUD and EXPENSIVE to run though. It needs a very powerful pump to run... at least 4500l and pressure rated. But it should be rather kick-######! I can't wait for it to be ready!
  18. As high as possible! If you want to see growth and colouration. No kidding. 400 watts for 2" deep tanks. 250 watts is also possible but your acros have to placed higher. I had a frag that was blue in somewhere else's tank which was lit by 500watts of lights and after a month or so in my tank, the frag has turned brown with only the tips blue. My tank is lit with 300watts of HQI MHs... and I am trying to upgrade ASAP! AT
  19. My tank is 5 foot 3 inches long actually! As far as I know, there are no rules on the length of a fish tank. My tank was built at home coz my apartment lift's are small and so's my doorway. And having carried my old tank up with my wife, my lil' bro-in-law and an old man, left us in pain for a week! Anyone need lobangs for custom built tank, let me know... Hon and a few others are getting this same guy too. AT
  20. A little too late. Tanzy's at the airport right at this moment and about to board his flight to UK. He'll be back in 6 months time and I dun think Chan from NA will help him.
  21. My old tank had the same design. It's a common one. Always try to have the biggest hole you can accommodate coz if you are looking into increasing water flow eg. using a big pump, the amount of water going thru a pipe of smaller diameter cannot cope and your tank will overflow. To control the amount of water going down into sump, install a ball or gate valve. If you want to make your overflow chamber to be a refugium of sorts... then you should put the pipe opening higher. Lower it and and you can choose to put bioballs in or use filter wool in the chamber. Tango.... drilling a hole into glass affects the integrity of the glass pane. If you can, you should have the glass tempered after drilling to strengthen it or simply use very thick glass. Leakage is a possibility if your silicon weakens.
  22. No.. flatworms do not hitch a ride on fishes. If you see a round bug on your fish... it's a parasitic pod. They are blood suckers. Try to get rid of it by giving your fish a fw dip.. or hope you have a wrasse around to hunt them down.
  23. Inspite of having the chance to do a deeper tank when I custom built my current one... I didn't go for anything deeper than 2 ft in dept (excluding 4 inches extra for sandbed). Reason being... once it exceeds 2 ft (which is the length of a human arm), you will find it very hard to do maintenance eg. pick objects like rocks, corals, clams etc. Since my tank is wide (3 feet) I have to sometimes work from the back coz I can't reach from the front. Although I agree a deep tank is nice to look at... you will regret big time later.
