Using bioballs in skimmer is not a new idea. It is actually incorporated into one or two designs from the US. Can't remember which brand/model. But I think there must be a reason why it was abandoned....

Spidey, what happened? They got too tight for you? Anyway... cleaner shrimps will grow big quite fast... it may be better to get hold of mid to small-sized ones because too big a cleaner shrimp may turn off a lot of fishes.... esp the small ones because the shrimp may end up even bigger than them... it could get really scary!

Where are these photos taken at?

There are some rocks which are thin, flat, extremely porous and IMO, more suitable for rockscaping than doubly function as a denitrification media. Logically bigger denser rocks that are less porous will have much lesser oxygen diffusion to its core... ideal for denitrifying bacteria to grow in this anaerobic/anoxic environment. Don't get 'rock' rocks... like granite or marble!
