  1. King Kong toxin, a component of the venom in some poisonous marine snails, has a peculiar power to go with its peculiar name. When injected into a meek little lobster in a tank full of superiors, the poison induces delusions of grandeur; the little guy starts marching around like he's king of the tank. Any given venom can contain hundreds of toxins such as King Kong, including some that are medically useful, but teasing them out of a venom sample is no mean feat. View the full article
  2. do you need to feed the frozen ones. Turn off the water circulation. And drop the thawed cyclopeze into the water... the anthias will go nuts!
  3. Living beings and inanimate phenomena may have more in common than previously thought. View the full article
  4. Marine biologists have developed a novel technique for reattaching large sponges that have been dislodged from coral reefs. The findings could be generally applied to the restoration of other large sponge species removed by human activities or storms. View the full article

  6. All fish have ears buried inside their heads. But fish that live in the deepest, darkest waters of the ocean may have particularly sensitive ears. Researchers have gathered the first anatomical evidence suggesting that some deep-sea fish have specialized structures to heighten their hearing. View the full article

  8. The SRC reef quiz has returned!!! What's this??!
  9. The ecosystem of the Cape Gannet, a protected bird species, has gone haywire. As a result of overfishing, the birds are no longer able to find enough food to rear their young. Pelicans, kelp gulls and seals are becoming increasing threats ? the lack of fish means that these predators are attacking Cape Gannet chicks more often. View the full article
  10. Researchers in the U.K. have discovered that fish can harbor and spread proliferative kidney disease, a cause of major stock losses on fish farms, as well as being affected by the infection. This paves the way for research to develop effective ways to combat the disease. View the full article
  11. A new study shows that some coral reefs off East Africa are unusually resilient to climate change due to improved fisheries management and a combination of geophysical factors. View the full article
  12. Marine scientists are astonished at the spectacular recovery of certain coral reefs in Australia's Great Barrier Reef Marine Park from a devastating coral bleaching event in 2006 when high sea temperatures caused massive and severe coral bleaching in the Keppel Islands. Damaged reefs were quickly smothered by a single species of seaweed -- an event that can spell the total loss of the corals. The rapid recovery is due to an exceptional combination of previously-underestimated ecological mechanisms. View the full article
  13. The potential for an outbreak of the phenomenon commonly called "red tide" is expected to be "moderately large" this spring and summer, according to researchers. View the full article
  14. Researchers from the United States and Canada have found a fossil skeleton of a newly discovered carnivorous animal, Puijila darwini. New research suggests Puijila is a "missing link" in the evolution of the group that today includes seals, sea lions, and the walrus. View the full article
  15. I dunno if I am even going, much less participating as we did before in the past. Every time the event downscales with the economy worsening over the last few years and it has become more like a meeting place for reefers at some booths and having very little to see in term of new products. I heard they are even combining it with a dog show this time! It is a good time to pick up stuff like cylop-eeze (if they return this time) and maybe you can bargain for livestock that will be cleared on the last day.
  16. Eating fatty fish and marine omega-3 fatty acids, which are found in fish oil, seems to protect men from heart failure according to one of the largest studies to investigate the association. View the full article
  17. The extent to which sexual harassment from males can damage relationships between females is revealed in a new study. The research uncovers the effect of sexual harassment on the ability of female fish to form social bonds with each other. View the full article
  18. Infectious salmon anaemia (ISA) is one of the most economically-damaging diseases in Norwegian fish farming industry. It is caused by a marine Orthomyxovirus, the same family that produces the influenza A virus that causes disease in birds and mammals. Researchers have looked at factors of the ISA virus genes that influence its ability to cause disease in salmon. View the full article
  19. Mites not only inhabit the dust bunnies under your bed, they also occupy the nests of tropical sweat bees where they keep fungi in check. Bees and their young are healthier when mites live-in, according to new research. View the full article
