Agree while it’s ok to sell frags to sustain this hobby but when frags are overpriced and sold at astronomical $$ the outcome is new hobbyists will be the carrot heads and soon leave this hobby. Hey Reefers! Felt really great to be back! Got myself a Red Sea reefer 170 and started cycling the tank today. This will likely still be a SPS dominated tank with some LPS/Zoas at the mids/bottom area.. Most of my equipments have yet to arrived so i will be cycling the tank while i gather my equipments, should be around 2 months before the first coral/fish goes in. Equipments: Red Sea Reefer 170 (60x50x50cm) Noopsyche K7 Pro II (will likely get another unit) Bubble Magus Z7 Jebao SLW-20M (Will probably need 2 as well) Jebao Doser 3.4 Tank is in! Despite being only a 2ft, it is pretty heavy espcially the cabinet. Got to say Red Sea makes quality tank set. Got a total of 15kg of dry rocks to play with. After lots of expoxy, glue and hours later.. trying to create a floating kind of scape with tier layers to incorperate SPS/LPS/Zoas demands. Grade 3 coral sand goes in as well, turns out to be a little to coarse and yellow for my liking, might swap them out in future. I like the scape above alot but in the long term, shadowing wil llikely cause an issue and the 'floating' side is tilted backwards which means less space for corals. So i decided to turn the whole scape 180 degree (glad i expoxy everything together!) and it looks pretty good too! Would be great to hear some opinion guys! I will work on the 2nd scape tomorrow to epoxy those rock shelves back that i removed in order to turn the scape and will post an update of what i can come up with! Meanwhile, i guess i have to patiently wait for the tank to cycle. Thanks for viewing!

Was using AL-60 Thermoelectric cooling chiller for 2--3 years for my 40-50L nano tank and lately found out it has problem bringing the temperature below 27.5 degree. Realized one of the fans stopped spinning. Since this chiller was doing fine before one fan spoil, so I decided to get another one. Will also replace the fan of the old chiller and use it as a standby. Perhaps I wasn't aware all along that this type of chiller will struggle during prolong hot weather, the problem I faced with the new AL-60. The new AL-60 failed to bring down the tank water temperature but instead the water temperature went all the way up to room temperature. I tested it with 5L and 25L of tap water and it was working normally. But once I hook it up to the tank, it was unable to cool the tank water at all, unless the weather was cooling with room temperature below 28 degree. During those days of troubleshooting, I have to on the room aircon to help out this new chiller So I concluded that this chiller is not suitable for me . Unless the water volume is halved so that it has enough juice to do its due diligence during a hot day. "Wasted $200" end up in storeroom. But not sure why the old one was able to do a better job. After researching for a while, seems like after AL-60, the next smaller budget chiller would be Hailea chillers. Haelia 100A was my first chiller and its noise is horrible. So I decide to choose either HK-150A or 28A. Finally I decided to go for HK-150A cos 28A seems like a very old model. Have been using the Hk-150A for almost a month now. Noise wise I think its ok. Its definitely no whisper quiet but is also not very noisy. Its probably sort of slightly louder than your room fan running at full blast Easy setup. Set it at 26 degree. So far has been working fine like clockwork. Kick in every 45-60mins and run for about 7-8mins. Hope it can last.

Thanks for the advice. Looks like getting a chiller is still very much recommended. Probably have to find ways to deal with the heat from chiller

First I suggest you retest to make sure your result is accurate. API test kits are notoriously inaccurate. Once result is confirmed start to do a series of water changes to get the value down. 20 or 30% at a time if possible. You may need to do two or even three changes over the course of a week or 10 days. After doing the water changes you need to address the possible causes... Look at inital water source. Move to RODI where possible. Look at soures of nitrate being generated, are you adding in too much food or have too many fish? It could also come from an accumulation of waste. So make sure you are cleaning out filter socks regularily, cleaning sand bed, and cleaning out sump. After addressing possible causes, you need to think about nitrate management. Take a good look at your mechanical and biological filtration and make sure it is adequate. Does the tank have enough flow to get the detritus suspended, is the skimmer turned in and size appropriately. Are you on top of your regular water changes and cleaning.. After mechanical look at your biological filtration. You have some macro algea so that should start growing and absorbing that undesirable nutrients. Just remember to harvest it regularily. Also you can give your biological filration a boost by adding in bacteria and additonal bio media if you don't already have (especially if you are running bare bottom tank). Carbon dosing and/or adding bio pellets, or even going down the zeovit route are other options to boost the beneficial biological filtration of you tank. Anyways, Good luck. personally i tink go for chiller is the right decision, normally whatever is rated, u need to include buffer, advertiser normally like to overestimate their stuff. no harm buying a bigger chiller as u just waste abit of upfront money rather than u buy something under rated and cant work, waste even more money. thermoelectric dont think even good for nano, for pico maybe yes. for the price point i rather buy a hailea chiller from taobao.
