  1. Livestock are living things and are scarce natural resources. Reefers choosing to bring them home should afford the best possible care and environment for the well being of these precious creatures.

  3. Using nsw DOES NOT significantly decrease cycling time. Please read up on the threads on teaching newbie how to properly setup a marine tank. You owe it to the animals now under your care. Here the link if you a unable to find it.

  6. Software - GHL Control Center For this round, I decided to talk about the software used to program the Mitra since this is where all the magic happens! The software does not come with the light unit so you will have to download it from http://www.aquariumcomputer.com. The download and installation went without a glitch. Using the included USB cable, it was a simple plug and play. This is the screen you get when you launch the program. Click on the "Connect" icon found in the top left corner to see your Mitra unit. The first page you'll see is the "General" page. Here you'll see the following: Mitra's serial number, firmware version - The latest version is the 1.08. Overseas site says a new firmware is in the pipeline. Preferred language option - Earlier firmware had problems with the English Language Option. Thankfully I encountered no such problem! Clock setting - You can either set the timing manually or simply use your PC's timing. Geograpgical position - The manual says this is for future use, wonder what is it used for? Perhaps a more acurate moon cycle? Brightness control for the touch panel on the Mitra - Quite a cool feature, you can set different brightness level for day time and for night time. Wireless channel - This is for use with other Mitra Units when acting in the master and slave mode. Sadly, programming the Mitra wirelessly is still not possible although ReefCentral says a wireless module to allow wireless programming is in the pipeline. Mode - For setting Master, Slave or Stand-Alone Time settings for Slave Units. The above is the Light Composer Page and also the most important page. Here is where you work the magic! Initally, it seemed very intuitive. However, after a frustration 15mins of programming and reprogramming wondering why the settings didn't get saved in the Mitra, I had to download the full programming manual and start reading. Turns out I have to click on the "Transmit illumination run to illumination channels" in order to enabe the save button to save the settings onto the Mitra. Clicking the "Transmit illumination run to illumination channels" also allows you to adjust each of the 9 light channel independently and this allows you to see what light and how much of it is being used at what time. The level of control you have is simply amazing. However, with such amazing level of controls, it also gives you a great headache if you have no idea what you want or simply want a pre-set colour temp. So how? Fortunately, there are common pre-set colour temps available for users to play with. What I did was to select the the colour temp I want, example: 12k. I can enhance the colour anyway I want by boosting or reducing any particular colour channel. The best part is . . . you can immediately preview the colour on your Mitra over your tank to see if you like it or not! If you are concerned how much useful light your corals are receiving, you can overlay clorophyl A, B and Violaxanthin (which I have totally no clue what it is) to see what useful light they are getting. Other cool stuff you can do with the Mitra is over at the Simulation control. Here, you can play with: Cloud Passing Moon Phase Rainy days All these are really cool! For cloud passing, each of the LED cluster will dim at slight different timing to simulate the cloud passing over. Of course if you have a bigger tank with more Mitras, the effects will be even better! However, cool as it is, I decided not to use it cos I do not consider this as important. The next cool thing you can do is the thunderstorm! I really think GHL should rename it to lighting storm in this case because the sound effects are not included. Here, you can set when you want it, how long you want it, how much you want it. Once again, the amount of control you have is nothing short of amazing. I tried it on the tank and it scared not only my fishes but also my kids! Over at the Energy Options page, you can set exactly how much power you want your lights to deliver, max fan speed, maximum temp, etc. One cool thing I found out from the manual was, if and when the max temp is hit, instead of shutting off the lights completely, what it does is to reduce the power delievered to the LED clusters to cool the Mitra and prevent it from over heating. Lastly, I want to talk about sharing! For the Mitras, you will have to save your light settings as a light project. You can share this with other Mitra users or get their light project if you fancy their programming. If you have problems with your settings, you can send it over to other experts to trouble shoot for you too! In conclusion, the software is way cool. However, nothing is perfect and neither is this. The one gripe I have is . . . I have no idea how to turn on the Mitras in the middle of the night if I want to check something! Surely I will not want to boot up my computer, plug in the USB and turn on the lights? Perhaps there is a way to do it but I have yet to discover it, so . . . . Stay tune for my next update!
