Would like to add some websites for all who are clueless and would like to find out more. As newbies, we all have lots of questions, hope these readings help answer some of them :)

Tank

Glass or acrylic?

How deep?

What shape?

Sump???

Filtration

What filtration do I need?

Water change?

Protein skimmer?

Algae scrubber?

Water circulation

Gas exchange?

Surface agitation?

Returns to tank?

Substrate

Bare bottom?

Shallow sand bed?

Deep sand bed?

Plenums?

Miracle mud?

Temperature

Temperature control?

These are not exhaustive, but should give you plenty to read up on. There are many differing views out there, so impt not to treat this as your bible, but as useful knowledge. :)

Good water parameters to aim for in your saltwater reef tank setup:

  • Specific Gravity 1.023 - 1.025
  • Temperature 75 F to 80 F
  • Calcium 400 - 450 ppm
  • Alkalinity - 2.1 to 2.5 meq/L
  • Magnesium - 1200 - 1400 ppm
  • Ammonia, Nitrite, Nitrates and Phosphate - 0 ppm
  • Iodine - 0.06 meq/L

How to yes calcium, magnesium ?

Alkalinity can use PH meter ya?

What do u mean by how to yes to calcium, magnesium?

Alkalinity need a different test kit. Although alkalinity and PH are related but they are not the same. PH meter can't tell us what is the alkalinity level in our water.

To test Calcium and Mag, you can use a test kit from Nyos is good.
Alkalinity and PH is not exactly related when you starts dosing, you need to check them separately. If your tank is small and do frequent water change, than monitoring Alkalinity is good enough.

Cheers

I have a 15g and a 40g tank, the 15g tank I can change water freely and so the water quality is better.
Getting a new tank with 90g plus a sump, in progress to make now.
